I had such a great experience with Michael Fox of Boyne Valley Tours back in 2015, that I reached out to him in advance of a return visit to Ireland that I took last month with my niece. Michael graciously collected us at the Dublin Airport shortly after our plane arrived at a very early hour. With time to spare, we took an impromptu detour from the motorway and headed to the beach in Bettystown and watched the sun rise over the Irish Sea! What a sight that was! We then meandered through various picturesque towns and then visited the impressive locations of Monasterboice, the Old Mellifont Abbey, Trim Castle, Hill of Slane (a must see!), and Slane Castle. From there, Michael brought us to our hotel in Derry. Along the drive Michael and I engaged in great conversations about Irish history (recent and not so recent) and current events. It was so great to see him again and it was as if we picked up where we left off nearly five years ago. If you intend to travel to the Dublin/Boyne Valley areas, I highly recommend that you plan a tour with Michael Fox of Boyne Valley Tours! He has so much knowledge to share and you are guaranteed to enjoy and learn from your experience! Book with him now before all the crowds return.

Our private day tour with Michael of the Boyne Valley was the highlight of our two week visit to Ireland. I can't say enough about what an enjoyable and informative day it was. Michael was very professional and very knowledgeable about the Neolithic sights that we had wanted to see, primarily Newgrange and Knowth. In fact, Michael created the first websites for Newgrange and Knowth and has spent decades learning about their history, which he is happy to relate. In addition to those large passage tombs, Michael took us to Four Knocks, which is a passage tomb off the beaten path that we never would have found. Four Knocks was definitely a highlight as it was much more remote and added to the experience of visiting these ancient monuments, the Neolithic art inside was spectacular.

We had requested a visit to Monasterboice, and along the way Michael also took us to Mellifont Abbey which was also incredibly impressive. I had thought we wouldn't have had time but it fit seamlessly into our day, as did the drive through the site of the Battle of the Boyne which Michael explained in detail. To cap off the fantastic day, we visited the Hill of Tara on the way back to Dublin where he described all of the features and the archaeological finds. Throughout the day there were additional sights here and there that he would point out.

He has a very easygoing manner and as a Boyne Valley native you can tell how much he enjoys sharing his home and the thousands of years of history found there.

As for the booking process, it was very easy through his website and Michael was an excellent communicator. He also knew all of the staff at the various sights and we were able to walk in with no issue. This was a top-notch private tour and I highly recommend to anyone wanting to visit this part of Ireland.

Fáilte is Irish for Welcome and is something that Michael exudes. From the friendly handshake to start the day until the he waved goodbye at the end you feel welcome to be in Ireland and on the tour.

We started my heading to the Boyne’s neolithic headliners: Knouth and Newgrange. On our drive up from Dublin we talked and Michael rearranged the itinerary on the fly to accommodate our wish to see the sea coast.

All through the day Michael was a source of interesting conversation on an amazing variety of topics and he made the tour fun and informative.

By the end of the day we had seen the Neolithic sites, Drogheda, Trim Castle, the Hill of Tara, and the Bective Abbey. It was a full day.

I would recommend Boyne Valley Tours to anyone visiting Ireland to get a grounding in Irelands rich history.

My husband and I joined Michael on a day-long tour of the Boyne Valley that included Newgrange and the Hill of Tara and many sites in between. Michael was a great guide - we could not have had such a productive day without him! He was friendly, knowledgeable, punctual and a great person to spend the day with. He picked us up and dropped us off at our Dublin hotel and had a full day of sightseeing (with a stop for lunch along the way). This tour was definitely worth it - and much more personal than sitting on a tour bus with many others.

Our tour with Michael was absolutely one of the best experiences in a long tour of Europe. We didnʻt have the greatest weather that day, but he worked around it with skill by adding some stops that offered some protection. Visitng Newgrange and another passage tomb, and the Hill of Tara were goals for our time in Ireland: we were very satisfied. And Michaelʻs knowledge of early Irish history and ability to talk about it were a true gift.

If you are a history buff, enjoy beautiful locations, or are just interested in unfathomable human achievements. This is the tour to do. Two friends and I did the Newgrange tour where we went to Newgrange, Knowth, and other hot historical locations such as Slane Castle, Hill of Tara, Battle of the Boyne Site, and even more. The cradle of Irish history from the neolithic time to the Irish/British discourse seen today can be linked to all of these sites.

On top of just visiting excellent spots, Michael just made it even better. Instead of being on a bus with 50 other people and having a time limit to see everything and return to the bus, we were able to see everything on our own time with Michael as our guide. He was very knowledgeable about everything we saw and wasn't afraid to correct the record on some "historical" facts that are usually presented. We were with Michael on our 3rd day in Ireland and were talking about how much fun that day was the rest of the trip.

He is the face of the Newgrange and Meath area so much so that if you google Newgrange he comes up before the official museum website. This just shows you how much he knows about the places and the effort he puts into the tours.

When I go back to Ireland I will definitely do another tour he offers. I also recommend him to anyone. The price is well worth it if you want to have a laid-back tour with a ton of historic value. Beats a bus tour any day.

Michael from Boyne Valley Tours is truly in a class of his own. I have never had a guide go to such lengths to make a custom tour fit our requests so exactly! In addition to perfect activities and sites, Michael is very pleasant and full of knowledge of the area. It was more like we were being shown around by a friend than by a hired guide. Yes, this area of the country is beautiful, and you will probably enjoy seeing it however you get there. Boyne Valley Tours, though, takes everything to the next level, shows you sites you would never see on your own (which also means fewer crowds) and gives the perfect amount of commentary to help you appreciate the area you are visiting. I will be forever grateful for helping make this special trip even more extraordinary. The day we spent on this tour will never be forgotten. (So, stop reading reviews and just book this tour!!)

Michael planned a two day itinerary for our group, a day trip from Dublin to Wicklow including Glendalough and Powerscourt and a second trip that combined a transfer to Kilkenny from Dublin visiting Russborough House, Jerpoint Abbey, Jerpoint Glass, and Kells Priory en route. He was unfailingly encouraging and flexible about fine tuning the stops for each day.
Michael is a guide of the highest caliber, with a wide store of knowledge, as well as being friendly, engaging and funny. Our days with him were a high point of our 3 week trip to Ireland. We learned so much while having a great time.

We would highly recommend this tour and our guide/driver Michael. We spent a day enjoying the remarkable historic and cultural sights of the Boyne Valley on this tour. Michael’s knowledge and enthusiasm about the valley and the various sites helped to build our understanding and enjoyment of all we saw. He answered our many questions and even sent us information after the tour in regards to something we asked about. Michael’s relaxed style and pleasant demeanour also added to the day. All in all, this was a real highlight of our trip to Ireland!

My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed our day with Michael Fox in Boyne Valley July 2024. We had a delightful day! He grew up near Boyne Valley and had many personal stories to share about his love for the sacred spaces we discovered. The pace of the day was excellent. I especially enjoyed stopping at the local weaver for a demonstration. He is passionate about telling the stories of the ancient communities that built Newgrange, Knowth, the Hill of Slane, Hill of Tara, and Battle of the Boyne museum. With his knowledge and great story telling, we easily traveled back in time to experience early life in Ireland. I highly recommend his private tour.
