About
As the fee includes a personally guided tour and refreshments in the pagoda beside the Water Garden, entrance is, naturally, by advance booking only. Coolwater, on half an acre, steps to the beat of a different drum with its breathtaking Water Garden, troughs chockerblock with choice Alpine plants and distinctively styled West Garden: don't expect lawns and borders in this garden! Overlooked on one side by Skule Hill and on the other by Rockstown Castle, it has been designed for year round structure and shape. The ponds in the West garden together with the large one in the Water Garden have also encouraged a superabundance of aquatic wildlife. Note! Advance booking only.

Kevin Begley has created this work of art over the past twelve years and together with his wife Claire they tend to it scrupulously so that whatever you see delights not just the eye but the very soul. I felt I was diving into the secret world of nature in every rock Kevin has dragged in from the surrounding hills. There is a huge diverse collection here including many extremely rare specimens. His knowledge is great and to me he seemed like a true Renaissance man with his sculpturing and other interests running in parallel to his great gardening skill. I would have liked to have seen more of Claire’s passion for perennials but that requires a new garden! The few areas where both styles merged interested me too, as I soon plan to create a mixed garden with some areas hosting Alpines.
There were several Piece de Resistance but the finale of a port (or two!) under a large copper roofed pagoda with large round table conducive to regaling one another with stories left fond memories of an afternoon well spent and well worth the drive.

I visited Coolwater Gardens with my Mother and Sister, we had a lovely time Kevin showed us around his beautiful garden, with all it's hidden gems, sculptures, floating pergola....viewing stand where we climbed to view the surrounding landscape... the main attraction for me was his large pond with all the water lilies. It is a fabulous garden to visit to see all his lovely plants and flowers and hear about where they all came from and what kind of soil they like etc,. etc.,
We finished off our walk with Tea and biscuits, provided by Kevins beautiful wife.

Located about 20 minutes from Limerick city, I had a really nice afternoon visiting the gardens and ponds of Coolwater Gardens on 10/5/21. Kevin provided an easy, meandering tour & his knowledge of the plants' names is exceptional and not at all high-falutin. His large workshop at the end of the garden houses a sporty 1960s Austin Healey car.

We rounded off visit with a coffee & biscuits in one of the cosy gazebos. It was all very relaxing and I was pleasantly tired after the visit.

Thank you.

We cannot recommend this tour enough, especially for anyone who is even remotely interested in gardens. Kevin is a wonderful host and very enthusiastic when explaining about his HUGE variety of intercontinental flora. We had a short rain shower during our visit but not to be deterred as rain jackets and umbrellas were offered and there are a number of shelters to hide under in the garden. (It wouldn’t be a true Irish experience without a little rain shower anyway!) We finished the tour with a stop in the pagoda for coffee/port and a general chat. Overall it was an excellent experience and worth going to if visiting the Ballyhoura/Limerick area.

We visited Coolwater Gardens yesterday having passed by a number of times. We were intrigued as to the variety of plant life behind the gates without being aware of the wonderful hospitality, friendliness and encyclopedic knowledge that awaits us. Kevin had our small group of 4 (ranging in age from 5 to over 65) awestruck from our introductions. He shared his knowledge of his garden and surrounding areas along with his many stories and anecdotes with such passion and personality. The variety of life in the garden isn't limited to plants. We could have spend all afternoon peering into the ponds at the various visitors and residents which inhabit them.
Kevin and Claire's generosity of time and information along with the wonderful refreshments and hospitality left us not only with minds full of wonder and amazement at the flora and fauna we encountered but also hearts full of calm and happiness having spent such a relaxing 2 and a half hours in what can only be described as a little piece of heaven.

Visited Coolwater Garden recently with a group and we really enjoyed our visit. Kevin and Claire greeted us with a warm welcome to their garden and offered us refreshments before Kevin began his guided tour. Everything about the garden was fantastic, from the great colour schemes, large variety of Alpines, Bamboos, Trees and shrubs to the pond with the floating room and other structures and interesting sculptures. He also has the most amazing green house which houses a wide variety of alpines, the garden is very tranquil and relaxing, well worth a visit for all gardeners

Coolwater Garden is a haven of specialist plants and esp great for alpine lovers. Kevin has very artistically arranged the troughs and it was a joy to see the collection i specially enjoyed the alpine house, water lily pond and the xeric garden. The hosts were very welcoming and treated us to lovely cakes.

Coolwater is a true plantsman's garden and a labour of love on the part of its affable and knowledgeable owner and creator, Kevin Begley. It's hard to believe that half an acre could contain such an enormous range of plants from exotic blue bamboos to alpines packed into troughs. He created the water garden allegedly because he doesn't like mowing grass and it is a central feature with gorgeous water lilies and a floating pagoda. Kevin and Claire have recently installed a splendid new Griffin glasshouse which they have planted up with acid loving plants on one side and alkali loving on the other which provides an interesting contrast. Coolwater Garden is definitely not to be missed by any plant lovers, whether expert or amateur, and the farewell glass of port adds a nice finishing touch.

Warm hospitality of Claire & Kevin, tranquil nooks & crannies- very clever planting in rocks & stones, sense of being transported to the Orient on floating gazebo over the man made lake. Introduced to some exotic species but also that most of the plants were native with wildflowers adding to the natural beauty of this magical garden. As very much a novice gardener even took a photo of a plant that I just might successfully grow!

Brillant way to spend an afternoon. Plants from all over the world includedkevin has so much knowledge of the plants and very creative ways off showing them off, if you love anything from ferns to rock formations this is a must see. The tour takes around a hour and follows number signs from the front of the garden to the back. Theres also a lovely view of a mountain. At the end of the tour I was offered a large array of refreshments and was happy to sit and watch the rain drop fall on the pond.
