We are novices to boating and hired a 4 berth cruiser for a 3 day trip. The boat was very clean although appeared to be quite old and had a sluggish engine. We watched online videos as was recommended and were informed we would receive a full tutorial on arrival. However, these tutorials were delivered by very young lads who whilst very polite appeared to be very busy and under pressure. Consequently the tuition was inadequate and didn't allow enough time for confidence to be gained in basic skills. I recognize that mastering the art of criusing takes time and practice and a willingness to have a go on the water without assistance, but given the cost of such holidays and the importance of clear instruction when handling a boat, I think Carrickcraft at Banagher could do better. I would certainly try another boating holiday and found the Enniskillen office staff very approachable and helpful on the phone. Perhaps we will start from Enniskillen next time.

Having been on the Shannon for more than 30 years we had a family reunion again on these magnificent waterways. Once more we rented from Sliver Line their Silver Breeze, the largest hire boat on the river and for sure also the most comfortable one. As always, the boat was in magnificent condition. This family owned business takes personal care of their customers and also their boats, which are in immaculate condition.
Although the weather was unfortunately not favorable we had once more a fantastic and memorable family-time on the river. Thank you, Barbara, Innes and the Silver Line crew, we were accommodated well.

Most likely the best holiday you can have in Ireland if you like being active and chilled, also don't be in a hurry. Take your layed back attitude with you, leave the rush behind in the car. This is our third year, first year we had the Waterford Class, last year the Linssen and this year the Longford.

The staff are brilliant, you do an online tutorial, when you check in they take you on "a tour around the lighthouse". This gives you the basics. After that you are on you own which is quite scary to begin with (remember the back of the boat moves first not the front). After a few hours or a day you will be full of confidence. When you are mooring up there are always other boat people to help out. Everyone mucks in experienced folk and idiots like me also.

Okay now that you are an 'expert' there is amazing country side to see and places to visit on route.

For me the best part of the day is when I we moor up in the evening and the hiss of that can as it is opened, reflecting on the amazing days cruising.

Enjoy folks, another one to tick off on the bucket list you won't be disappointed 😁

We visited the River Shannon as a group of adults and hired a boat from Silverline in Banagher. (We have had very many similar holidays elsewhere.)

Silverline were not as organised and communicative as we would like but it all 'worked' in the end. Service was far too slow but they were friendly, helpful and effective. The boat was rather poorly supplied with consumables (dishcloths, rubbish bags and the like). The bedding was particularly poor quality. In general although entirely serviceable and adequate, the boat looked a little 'tired'

Our trip was marred by poor weather - it hardly stopped raining. But we were disappointed by the lack of wildlife and the limited opportunities to tie up and explore the 'shore'. (This is a river with marshy edges unlike a canal with hard edges and usually a towpath. ) Hiring bikes was a total waste. Would be an excellent location for anglers

We spent 4 lovely nights on the Silver Shadow from Banagher to Lough ree and back. I would really recommend then silver shadow as it is a luxury cruiser with 2 bathrooms. Plenty of room for 2 couples, I think it would be cramped with 6. The fly bridge/cover is fantastic as keeps you dry and out of the wind. We stopped in Shannon Bridge, Hodsun Bay, Le Carrow, Athlone, Wineport Lodge and Killinure Chalets. We would all definitely recommend!

From start to finish they deliver a professional and friendly service.
Barbara, Inis & Naomi are front of house and nothing is ever too much trouble.

The silverline crew will always speak to you.

Boat was clean and tidy on picking her up. We had the silver spray class.and loved it.

The whole experience makes you want to come back again. In fact we will be be back in May.&. August.

We hired a 6 berth for a week. We were upgraded to a Waterford which is a roomy comfortable boat. We were 4 adults and had plenty of space. The staff we met were friendly and helpful. The kitchen was better than other boats we have experience of. The showers while compact were fine. Again better than usual. Thanks to all at Carrick craft!

I have just come back from a 3 night cruise on the River Shannon and decided to add this review as I was unable to find anything about cruising the Shannon before I left.

We went with Silver Line Cruisers based in Banagher, Co Offaly and took a Silver Crest (6 berth boat). Adjacent to Silver Line is Carrick Craft and I also saw cruisers on the river from Waveline Cruisers, Athlone Cruisers, Shannon Cruisers and Emerald Star Cruisers. These are located at various locations along the Shannon.

On our first night we went to Shannon Bridge (tied against the quay wall) and ate in the Old Fort Restaurant - met the owner who told us about the history of the wonderful building (old Napoleonic fort) and enjoyed good steaks. We also visited the local pub - "Killeens" - grocer/pub all in one.

Following morning we visited Clonmacnoise (about an hour upriver of Shannonbridge) and from there we went to Athlone. After going through the lock in early afternoon we moored at the Marina adjacent to the Radisson Blu hotel which is run by Athlone Town Council. Charge €12 per night and showers €3 each.

Sunday - return journey and we hoped to visit Shannon Harbour but having approached the lock in Shannon Harbour decided not to venture onwards by boat so we tied up and visited McIntyre's (another grocer/shop/bar all in one!) by foot (about quarter of a mile).

We returned to Banagher for our last night and ate in the Brosna Lodge Hotel.

Silver Line Cruisers were superb to deal with, very pleasant, helpful, efficient and for each boat rental you watch a safety video and get an on the water demonstration of how the boat handles. We will be returning to the River Shannon!.

My wife and I have been boating regularly on the Shannon for nearly 20 years now, and have used Carrick Craft and Emerals Star mostly, with the occasional deviation. However, this year we decided to try out Lough Erne in Northern Ireland for the first time, and whilst at it, have a change from our usual boat rental firm.
This time we used a family firm, ABC Boats, just north of Enniskellin, on the northern shore of Lower Lough Erne, run by Mickey & Liz McCaldin. We hired the Inver Duke, a Haines 35, and I have to say it was perhaps the best equipped boat we have ever had the pleasure to use. Spotlessly clean, it also had other bits of equipment not normally found on boats rented out by the "big boys" - such as bow thruster, depth sounder, compass, fuel guage, water tank guage, extra large fridge etc. The top deck steering position had a canopy in place, something that has not been available with with the big boys, and all the windscreen wiper blades were in reasonable condition too..! We had one small problem with one of the sea toilets, but a call to base produced an engineer within the hour, problem solved.
The fact that our boating holiday coincided with the arrival of the remnants of Hurricane Katiya from the USA did nothing to detract from our enjoyment of a relaxing holiday.
This family firm are EXCELLENT, and I can recommend them highly..!

We rented a Silverline 8-berth 'Legend' cabin cruiser for 4 nights from Banagher Co Offaly. We were absolutely thrilled with the boat! It was spacious and new, and was sleek and stunning from the outside and very well laid out and comfortable inside. We had cruised down the Shannon about 15 years ago (and loved it) but this was a whole new experience with a boat that handled really well in and out of the ports (with an electric bow thruster) and across the lakes (it just cut through the water albeit at the very slow speed these boats allow). The Silverline staff were also extremely helpful and friendly.

We were a party of 4 adults and 3 kids (aged 10, 11, 12) and needed to plan our stops so the kids weren't stuck on the boat too long for any one journey and to try to find things for them to do when we stopped along the way. We left Banagher on the Friday at 5.30pm after getting our training and made it up to Athlone (before the lock) for that night (9pm). Next day when the lock opened we headed across Lough Ree (3 hours crossing) and stopped in Lanesborough Co Longford for lunch (really nothing to do for the kids in this town which is such a pity as its location is so beautiful). We travelled further upstream and stopped in Rooskey that night. Again, although stunning, not much for the kids to do here at all but there was music in The Weir House that night which we all enjoyed and the local people could not have been friendlier or more helpful.

Next day we cruised upstream to Carrick-on-Shannon Co Leitrim for the afternoon. There was a fair on and there were lots of great things for the kids to do! There were excellent street entertainers and a car rally and discount shops for the kids to spend their holiday money in (which was burning a hole in their pockets!). There were also carnival games for various ages and safe playgrounds for them to have a run around. After a wonderful afternoon, we headed downstream (as we had to get back to Banagher by the end of our trip) and stayed the night in Dromod - a beautiful Shannon village. Although raining when we got there, the kids still loved the local playground before settling down with board games and cards on the boat that night.

Next day we left early and after making our way back down through the lovely canal and locks, we cruised back across Lough Ree and moored in Hodson Bay Hotel marina. There's a water adventure place there and the kids went off kayaking and jumping off the pier under the supervision of the instructor. They had a blast! Then we went into the hotel spa and booked an hour in the heated swimming pool (we had to buy head gear) - they loved it! After all that exertion, we treated ourselves to a lovely meal in the hotel and then back to more family games on the boat that night.

Next day we cruised the last leg down to Banagher and stopped at Clonmacnoise on the way to visit the old monastery and ruins - simply amazing - ancient, spiritual, stunningly beautiful! Although we were only away from Fri evening until Tue afternoon it felt like we'd been away for 10 days as every stop felt like a new day for the kids and life slowed down so much as we cruised gently along this majestic river. We all loved the trip so much that the kids asked if this could become a tradition and we hope to return again next year starting from further upstream so we can visit Lough Key forest park where the kids can zip-wire and have fun at Boda Borg.

We were very lucky with the weather - it was mostly dry and sunny with some mild showers here and there but nothing to 'dampen' the holiday. The boat was so well equipped that we were able to cater for our meals on board and there was also a TV/DVD which we didn't bother to switch on as we wanted a real get-away break and that's what we got - a truly magical trip that had something for everyone. We were saddened and disappointed, though, in some of the towns as they have clearly suffered from the recession and made no attempt to cater for tourists. A concerted effort is needed to make sure there is at least one 'hopping' pub with music and the craic (and a welcoming fire if the weather is bad) and to offer more things for kids to do during the summer. Facilities and events don't have to be expensive but kids need some creative distraction at every stop even if it's just a well planned playground or maybe somewhere they could learn how to fish or learn new water/adventure sports or learn more about the bog and ancient Ireland.

All in all though a magical break in an enchanting part of Ireland!
