This seemed like the best stop in Kilkenny for really authentic and artisanal Irish gifts. We didn't venture into the cafe but found some awesome hats, ceramics and jewelry there. A great stop after visiting Kilkenny Castle!

I had such fun in this store! Their knitted sweaters are great and so fashionable. I loved the ceramics. My favorite purchase was a red fall coat. I get so many compliments on it and wish I could wear it all year long! And they ship.

The Design Center is located in historic buildings across the street from Kilkenny Castle. It has shops that offer many Irish design/craft items like wool scarfs and throws, wool hats, baby items, jewelry, handbags, woven items, pottery, pictures, etc. The complex has a restaurant and cafe. It is directly across the street rom Kilkenny Castle, and behind the Butler Hotel which has a very pretty garden and the hotel also offers tea.

My wife and I had a lunch here yesterday.
I ordered an “Open Prawn Sandwich” at a cost of €11.95 ...
What a rip off .. no whole prawns visible whatsoever basically all it consisted of was a load of shredded coleslaw that include some chopped up prawns which really had to be searched for to find, some salad leaves all on two slices of brown soda bread. A prawn cocktail stater costing €11.95 in any decent restaurant would be loaded with prawns ..
I returned it and got a refund.

Two generic gift shops near the cafe and four others were the only things open during our visit. I expected to see many more small artisans. Enjoyed visiting with the potter and brought home a couple of pieces. Also had an excellent visit with Desmond Byrne. He’s a wonderful silver craftsman. If not for these two little shops our visit would have been a complete bust! Five stars for those two one for the rest!

Wondered whether I'd fast forwarded into 2030, looking at the prices: €12.95 for a smallish baguette with salad and feta. The cheapest thing on the menu was chicken pie - a few pieces of chicken in cream covered in mash, served with two 'salads', grated carrot and a mix of crudely cut, tasteless tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Not a sign of a dressing on the salads. Another chicken dish was accompanied by a few steamed potatoes and a tiny portion of soggy vegetables. Americanos at €3.15 were more expensive than most Dublin cafes. We concluded they must be tourist prices - ie rip them off, they won't be back. Well no, they won't be back. And nor will their friends and nor will we or our friends. And thus a reputation spreads. And thus the reputation of a whole city spreads, and then a whole country. Kilkenny Design Cafe - with your overpriced lacklustre food, you are a blotch on all Irish cafes.

I went into the Design Centre to buy a momento of our trip to Kilkenny. We were in the shop looking around when the calm was shattered by a bully shouting at a junior member of staff. Everyone was subjected to this display on more than one occasion, it was awful. The bully was a large lady and she certainly was throwing her weight around. It was disgusting and was a tourist attraction for all the wrong reasons!! We put back the items we were going to buy and left the shop.

They have beautiful blankets, shawls, scarves, and pottery here. Unfortunately, they can take advantage of tourists by charging extreme shipping amounts. Please check your receipts closely and ask for details re: shipping costs. I purchased 3 wool blankets and a beautiful pottery bowl for family members for the holidays. When I asked about shipping costs, I was assured it was "not much at all" and was told it was well worth the shipping costs because of the VAT (tax) exemption. The shop was really busy and the line was quite long, so I didn't take the time I should've taken to look closely at the receipt. When I did, I realized I was charged 60 euros ($72) for shipping! The website advertises free shipping for purchases over 245.00, so I called the store afterward to express my confusion and disappointment (as I spent much more than that). I asked for them to cancel the purchase & noted I would buy the same things online, knowing they don't do any shipments over the weekends anyway and my goods would still have been in the store. I was told this was only a possibility if a) I returned to the store in person (which I couldn't do because I was on a group tour) or b) shipped the goods at my own expense AFTER they were shipped to me. In short, I was told I was out of luck, so I lost $72 for something I could've ordered online. I wish I would have purchased the gifts elsewhere, because they're readily available at other shops with free shipping.

The Design Centre is just across the road from Kilkenny Castle in what were once the stables. The main shop has a wide range of gifts from cheap Guinness bottle openers to very expensive individually crafted designer artifacts. If you are looking for good quality unusual gifts you'll find them here but at a price. There is a restaurant upstairs which we didn't visit. Beyond the main shop are some small workshops with potters and silversmiths actually producing on site the items they have for sale. If you continue through an arch at the back you'll come to the Butler House and Gardens.

I love giving my business to local producers and merchants when traveling, as I feel you take the unique qualities and design home overseas, where it is completely unique and special. This store was a treasure trove of hand made, unique, local, artisan products.... I am absolutely enamored with this store! In my travels I pray for a company like this, who support the local economy and artisan in one storefront.

The woolens, of which there is a plethora in all the touristy schlock shops, here are a step above in quality, colors and design. The sales they had on Waterford Crystal outpaced the prices in The House of Waterford itself. The pottery was gorgeous (but I was afraid of overseas transport, so did not purchase) and of beautiful modern design and color~ I wish I had purchased, but maybe on a return visit.

The coffee shop was pretty and efficient, and absolutely a hand crafted love fest of food, I wish I had visited the cafe, alas time ran short. The staff in all quarters were personable, efficient, and kind. I honestly felt like I was in a time warp.... even in Brown Thomas in Dublin the customer service was only a fraction of the attentiveness and kindness I experienced in this boutique.

Bravo, you bring the love of art and product to your service~ you are all artisans in service! Thank you from the "patient American Gentleman" on your first day of your new POS system.....
