Kell's Priory is an amazing price of Irish history. We were very surprised upon showing up that they were doing guided tours for the summer. Our tour guide, Mick, was very knowledgeable and great fun. Give yourself about 40 minutes for the tour.

The site was wonderful and the guides were the best we've had in Ireland. Very helpful, wonderful story tellers, very knowledgeable. The even opened the tower house for us and guided is to the top for some spectacular views. My daughter (6 & 8) didn't want to leave. There is plenty of room to run and nooks and crannies to... We stayed at an AirBnB within walking distance of the Kells Priory and did we luck out! It was the first week they started tours of the Priory. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgable and gave us a 5-star tour of the grounds and the tower, the first ever! The view or the Priory and surrounding countryside from above was... More

Very pleasantly surprised by this fantastic attraction in Kells village ,approx 8 miles outside Kilkenny, which dates back to 1200's. Well worth a visit. Our guides Leona and Mick were very knowledgeable , and added to the experience , with highlight being access to recently opened tower. Don't be put off by walk across field to gain access- the Sheep... More

Stumbled across this place by accident. We were on route back from Callan and saw a sign for a market. When we got to Kells we realised we had got the day wrong but we found a lovely craft centre at an old mill. Well worth a visit in and a cup of tea and cake was only 3 euro.... More

We parked at the old mill down the river from the site and had a beautiful walk in to the site. We enjoyed exploring the 12th-Century priory and grounds for about 30 minutes before settling on a ruined wall for our picnic lunch. There were hardly any other people there, so it was peaceful and private. While we wished there... More

We visited Kells Priory on July 2, one day after they had instituted a pilot program that provides guided tours of the site. This is an extensive and impressive heritage site, but really needs a guide to place it within a historical context and explain what one is looking at. Mick provided what turned out to be a private tour... More

This is a very peaceful place to visit - there was hardly anyone there when we were there. It is free to go into it as well but however it is in quite a state of ruin. It is a very beautiful place though and well worth a stop if your in the area.

Beautiful ruins of a very large priory located on a river. Ruins have not been well preserved but it appears that OPW may be doing some work on some of the site to maintain it. The setting is beautiful, particularly with the sheep grazing and river rolling. There was only one other couple there at the time we went (midday).... More
