- LDScottravellerBalfron, United Kingdom87 contributionsBrisk walk along the promenadeLovely open walk on good paths along the seafront. Plenty of seats for rest stops and points of interest and photo opportunities. We went to the diving platforms and were pleasantly surprised at the facilities for getting changed. We would go back. Buses back to Galway town centre were regular and easy to hop on and off. Not too pricey either. The only downside was the weather which was wet and changeable and the sandflies which flew into your face when you were on then beach. Fabulous views across the water and very atmospheric.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 15, 2023
- EileenM17Olympia, Washington64 contributionsOur favorite walking pathWe walked this beautiful promenade every day during our three month stay in Galway. It starts at the Spanish Arch and trails its way into Salthill where you’ll find an array of great restaurants, coffee shops and bakeries. A charming path leadng to charming places.Visited May 2022Written April 17, 2023
- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, California2,971 contributionsNice WalkIt’s maybe 4 miles round trip from Eyre Square and worth the undertaking. Once you get to the promenade, the beach areas appear, though, not too appealing this time of year. Restaurants, an amusement park, and a few shops are populated along the walk. A nice exercise for a couple of hours, enjoy the fresh air.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 6, 2023
- TeresaUSAAtlanta, Georgia6 contributionsQuiet, but walking distance to the center of Galway. Loved it !We stayed an amazing hostel here. My great grandparents home was facing Galway Bay. Bought in the 1800's, it was sold18 mos ago. Knocked on the door and the new owners allowed us to walk thru and see their updates. They were so nice.....Salthill area closed down early at night for dinner, but only 15 mins walk away from center of the city for other restaurants. Loved being in the quiet of Salthill, but close to the busy city of Galway.Visited June 2023Written June 24, 2023

If you are local you are sure to bump into someone you will recognize. Take a swim on the beach or at Blackrock Diving Tower. In high summer there are lifeguards on duty until 7pm on 7 days a week. - Colin BBelfast, United Kingdom251 contributionsSalthill Diving BoardAlways wanted to go here to jump off the diving board at the end of the beach. It was patrolled by life guards and there is a changing area right beside the pier. Was brilliant fun - just make sure to check the tide times as they do close it around low tide.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 21, 2023

The promenade is a long, large and secure path to enjoy the gorgeous sea view.
It starts at the Spanish Arch in Galway and it ends far far away at the end of Salthill area, beside the Golf fields.
The runners have plenty of space to enjoy their activities and families with their children too. During the summer it is pretty busy and it's a good chance to met people as you enjoyng a lovely walk .
Definitely, if you have time in your holidays, I reccomend having a walk , night or day time, it is absolutely safe indeed.

Lovely spot to walk, run, swim or cycle etc.
Weather can be changeable but definitely worth the visit. Plenty of parking available if you want to drive but its also close enough to city centre that you could walk if you fancied it.
Plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and bars along the route too for refreshments.

First time to visit Salthill Promenade and it it was amazing. The views were great and to walk it was so nice. Found it quite relaxing and very tranquil and the views are amazing too. It's easy to travel to by bus or if you drive there is plenty of parking available. If you like walking along by the seafront then this would be the ideal activity to do and will pass some time also. I really enjoyed it found myself quite relaxed afterwards. There are also some local bars that you can enjoy too that provide food and drink if you prefer after your walk on the promenade. I will be back to Galway again and will return to Salthill Promenade again, great location top marks.

Salthill has lots of parking for visitors, but at popular times it can be filled up. Being popular gives it a nice busy vibe. The promenade is long and wide, very suitable for a long walk, and because it is flat, not too onerous. There are great views from shore at all times. There are a few coffee shops for a rewarding treat. As with a lot of the Republic of Ireland, public toilet facilities are poor.

What a great place to walk. You can go for miles.
The Salthill area is definitely better than the walk into Galway town which is a bit tacky in places.
We were there at a weekend and saw loads of swimmers and cyclists as well as the walkers and strollers.
Beautiful!

We parked up on the roadside no problem at all. Can't believe that parking is free. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we walked the about a mile up the promenade and back stopping off at varied points to go down onto the beach to sit in the sun or to do a bit of fossil hunting. It is a truly wonderful place that makes everyone smile and feel good.

We had a lovely walk on the promenade on a windy morning after Storm Ellen. It was very clean and litter free. Lots of seaweed washed op on the sand but that was due to the storm. We did a 2K walk but we couldn’t find a toilet! That was a disappointment.

I'll be staying at the Kinlay Hostel which is by the bus station. How far is the promenade? Can you walk to salt hill from the center of Galway? If not, do you know if you can take a bus to salt hill? I'll be in Galway March 15-18.
Thanks,

Are there amusements???
There are amusement areas some by the sea but not on the prom, there was a little road train that took families around the seafront.

Hello, I plan to visit Ireland in July and would like to have ideas on nice walks along the coast. I would plan to stay in Galway and depart from there. Is that a good idea ? I will not have a car so I need to get to places with the bus or the train. What can you recommend me ?
Thanks in advance to share some advice.
Regards,
Chris
