Great way to learn about Galway & the Aran Islands
This museum was a great way to learn about Galway and the Aran Islands when we arrived. It just so happened to be quite rainy on our first day so this museum was a good first stop. Small yet packed with great exhibits and history.
Thank you for taking time to write this review, we really appreciate it!

The Irish Independence Story Told Well
The museum is next to the tourist office. It is free to enter. The displays are well thought out and arranged. They tell the story of key people in the fight for Irish independence. The displays try to tell all sides of the Irish independence debate and are very informative. There was also a display on the Aran Islands, which told the islands story in an informative and entertaining way. I would say allocate about an hour.

    I Wouldn't Miss This
I wish we had had more time to stay here. I'll definitely go back if we get back to Galway. The display to the left as one first enters the building has a very succinct yet complete history of the area. That was worth the trip in itself.
Thank you so much for recommending Galway City Museum so highly. We hope you will visit again soon!

Welcoming receptionist. Informative and interesting museum displays.
The woman who helped us at the reception was very friendly and welcoming. The museum is well worth a visit and has plenty to see and read. The history of Galway was interesting to learn about The surrounding area is lovely and picturesque, as it's by the harbour.
We are delighted to hear that, thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. We really appreciate it!

    Well worth your time!
This museum is well worth at least an hour, or better yet, two hours of your time. Easy location, right by the Spanish Arch and the river. Be sure to see the 15 minute film on the ground floor. I loved the native watercraft and the well Illustrated story of Ireland's rise from the early Celts to the people and places of contemporary times, including some history of the Aran Islands. One caveat; If your eyes are old or vision poor I recommend that you bring your smartphone well charged, in order to read some of the print on the second floor. Some exhibits are marginally lighted. Strong or young eyes will probably be unbothered. I would have given the museum five stars instead of four stars if the lighting up there was better or is improved in the future. Also, be sure to bring small bills in cash, as the suggested donation of five euros is self-serve and there is no change given.
Thank you so much for this detailed review, we really appreciate it. We are sorry to here the lighting was not satisfactory for you on the second floor. There are restrictions to lighting in certain areas depending on sensitivity of the objects on display but we will certainly review this area again to ensure it is at maximum light permitted. We hope you will visit again soon!

    Great Museum!
We visited the Galway City Museum whilst on holiday in Galway. We found the experience here to be really quite enjoyable. The museum is very informative and there is a good range of exhibitions on offer, despite its surface area not being the biggest I've ever seen. In particular, I liked the biological exhibit on the top floor as this had interactive elements where you could check your pulse rate and do an exercise task - fun! Equally, the museum is very well-kept. All areas, including the public toilets, were nice and clean. We also found the staff here to be very friendly. When we arrived, we asked if we needed to pay to enter. The guy behind the desk was very friendly and helpful and informed us that we did not, although a cash donation would be greatly appreciated. As a result, we decided to donate 10€ to the museum. What would I change? Some of the exhibits were very text-heavy, ie. there were a lot of things to read and not a lot of interaction. But considering the attraction is free, you can't really crib about something like that too much. Overall, if you're in the city, it's definitely worth paying a visit to this nice little museum. Would recommend!

Well Located, With First Class Exhibits
The Museum is free and located next to the Galway Visitor Center and near the Spanish Arch. Their exhibits were very well done and presented. If you're going to read most everything, this will certainly take several hours. Most interesting to me was the upstairs exhibit(s), in a rather large hall, of early 20th century Irish history.
We really appreciate your feedback, thank you! Visit again soon!

    Well Worth a Visit
The museum looks very new and is bright and spacious once inside. I fully expected to have to pay an entrance fee but admission is free. I tried to make a donation but this is cash only so suggest they get card facilities for donations. I leaned a lot about Irish history both nationally and locally to Galway there were personal stories to illustrate the events of the early 20th century. Well worth a visit.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this great review, we really appreciate it! We note your suggestion re card donations and have plans to introduce this in the very near future.

Fantastic! Must do if visiting Galway
Brilliant museum with a broad range of displays from modern history, ancient history, art, geology and marine biology and culture. Downstairs is very much like an art gallery, serene and airy with more kid friendly and interactive areas upstairs with some lovely views. Could easily spend several hours here, though worth doing a whistle stop tour if short on time. Entry is free with voluntary donation- they don't currently take cards so remember cash!

The museum was way more comprehensive than I expected. It covered so many areas of local history with wonderful displays and multimedia presentations. It was not at all crowded, but very well situated. I would recommend the museum to anyone visiting Galway who has an interest in Irish history.

I spent a fascinating 2 hours learning about both Galwegian and Irish history. The displays are beautifully curated and some are interactive. You can see it all in a short afternoon and this is time very well spent. I highly recommend it especially for families.

Excellent exhibit right in the centre of the city. It is located only five minutes from Eyre Square, and is right on top of the Spanish Arch and Latin Quarter. The first floor seemed a little bit boring, mainly showing art pieces based on history, but as we went through it there were much more artefacts and the second and third floors were very colourful and had a mix of artefacts, readings, and images. It is a place that I would have paid to go see.
The only thing I would say that is a little negative is that the allotted hour and fifteen minutes are a little too short of time and you would need closer to two hours to see and read the full contents of the museum.

The first floor is on the history of Ireland, from medieval time to the present. I am very interested in the medieval history display. The second floor is about natural science and the sea, which is interesting too. It is suitable for people of all ages.

I found this museum to be mildly interesting for about an hour, as it provided shelter from the rain. It is free admission, and is located along the river. Three floors of displays provide commentary on the history of Galway, which, though intriguing, did not blow me away. For free, it’s worth an hour.

My adult son (20) and I visited the museum and enjoyed it very much. It is very orientated to give you clear information through a good mixture of expiation material. The views from the museum out over the bay are a good reminder as you make your way around of the geography of the area. The staff are friendly and helpful. I was also impressed that they had a sensory room for children which is a nice touch and makes the museum inclusive.

What an excellent and well put together exhibit, and it's free. We just loved spending time learning more about Galway and the history and culture of the city. If you take your time with all the exhibits, you can learn so much. There is alot to see beyond the first floor, so make sure you go upstairs and walk through everything. This was an excellent way to orient ourselves with Galway.
