We joined the boat at Lisloughrey Quay yesterday, in wind and rain. Nonetheless, this took nothing away from the hour-long cruise around the upper part of Lough Corrib. Our skipper, Patrick Luskin gave live commentary about the history of Ashford Castle, the environs and the lake itself. He is very knowledgeable and we are happy that we bought a copy of the super booklet he wrote, which was on sale onboard, as we have a memento now forever following a most enjoyable boat trip.

In the past we have done the tour near the near the shores of Lough Corrib on bicycles but this time we used a friend’s boat. There are also boats for hire at several locations around the lough, and boatmen are also available. We headed out for a cruise into the Lough and had great views of the many islands and the multiformed Connemara Mountains. The lake (lough” in Irish/Gaelic) is famous for its salmon fishing and wild brown trout, with the added avantage that angling is free on Lough Corrib, which is 33 miles long from Maum Bridge to near Galway City, making it the second largest lake in Ireland with over 365 islands. After tea in the majestic Ashford Castle we later visited the adjacent Lough Carra and Lough Mask in county Mayo – stunning in fine weather and a most enjoyable area to visit.

Turn right onto Camp Street in Oughterard, by the Boat Inn, and keep driving until you hit a beauty spot car park and there is a access only sign. The walk for a mile and you are suddenly in a sublime bog marked with Wild Atlantic Way path signs, and not much else, then you'll find yourself on a wooden floating bog path and you will just keep going in new pine forest with view of the Lough, bogs, islands, and not much else. Beautiful and quiet.

i think the best view of Corrib is the drive between Cong and Maam. Lough Corrib is reputed to have 365 islands - one for every day of the year. The view from this road are at a height and you get a feeling of scale, wilderness and beauty of the lake. Cong village and Ashford castle certainly worth a visit too. Beautiful walking in this part of county. See Petersburg adventure centre for details on the walking festival. Also you can get someone to take you out on the lake for a day on a small boat for around 100 euro (max 3/4 passengers) . Great value on a good day bring a picnic.

Went for a drive around all of lough corrib... The scenery was breathtaking... I heard connemara and lough corrib was beautiful but did not expect this! It is so rural, rugged and stunning.... It is a must see to see Ireland's beauty! We found a lovely park right beside the lake with benches and stunning views and small wooden fishing boats docked there! The day wasn't amazing... Was raining a bit but still had an amazing day... A must see!

Stayed at Ashford Castle for 2 nights and we arrived by cruise. It was a wonderful way to arrive. There are 365 islands on the lake and most are uninhabited. Rugged and beautiful.

I first saw this lake from the Ashford Castle and it is beautiful. It's the second largest lake in Ireland with over 365 islands and beautiful vistas of the Connemara Mountains. Said Patrick was banished to one of the islands on Lough Corrib. I enjoyed seeing the lake via the Isle of Innisfree boat with the Luskin brothers for only 20€ from the castle. A very worthwhile experience. It was very enjoyable in December. The lake is incredibly stocked with a variety of fish which is an angler's dream.

There are many lakes in Ireland, and I don't know what it is about this lake that keeps us coming back to it. Maybe its size, which is very large; or its wildness, fishing, or boating. There is a wonderful
drive out of Oughterard. Head NE toward Gwann (I think the maps say Curraun) It's more like a 1 car lane and it's a gorgeoous drive. If you want a long walk, take the well marked walk called "The Western Way". You can ask any of the locals or look for it on a map. It's worth it! Especially the end of the walk. The scenery is so beautiful; it looks like its straight out of a book on photograpy. Part of the drive I explained is on the "Western Way".

Staying at Ashford Castle we were right next to the jetty for the lough cruise. The lough is large and boasts several wee islands, some of great historical interest. A cruise is highly recommended. The lough is beautiful and the scenery around it compliments its beauty.

Even on a cold, damp, gray day you can see the beauty of this area. It’s a wonderful drive. I can’t imagine how beautiful it would be in the sunshine.
