My family and I booked this tour knowing only bits and pieces about the Book of Kells and Dublin Castle. Our guide, Richard, was fabulous. He was clearly versed on Ireland’s epic history, the Book of Kells, and Dublin Castle. He knew Dublin like the back of his hand. He did a terrific job weaving personal stories and anecdotes within an animated and interesting history lesson.
The Book of Kells was interesting, but the newly opened Book of Kells Experience made it even better. The 3-D style experience explained the history of the Book and how it came to be one of the most important pieces of religious literature in the world.
The Long Room in the library is amazing. There is this VERY odd and out of place modern globe in the middle of the room that sadly detracts from the beauty of the Long Room. Most of the books are away being restored, but there are plenty that are finished and now back on some of the shelves.
The trip from Trinity College to Dublin Castle was interesting with a few short stops built in discussing some of the history and architecture in Dublin.
If you have any mobility issues make sure you tell your guide before the tour begins. He moved fast and my daughter who was in a walking boot sometimes struggled to keep up. Not the guide’s fault at all. We should have asked him to accommodate her.
This is a great tour for families with children ages 9+. Any younger and they may be bored. My son is 11 and found it entertaining.
Dublin Castle is really beautiful. It is under renovation so we only were able to see an obstructed portion. Would love to return and take a guided tour of the interior.
Overall I would highly recommend this tour and Richard as your guide. He was experienced, kind, knowledgeable, and very professional. We really enjoyed our time.
