Big Jim, as he was known, was especially known for his activism, and his role in the 1913 great strike of Dublin.

Jim Larkin is remembered on O’Connell Street for his dedication to worker’s rights. He evidently was a larger than life figure. The statue is made of bronze by Oisin Kelly in 1979. We found it interesting that the inscriptions on the monument are written in French, Irish and English. One of the inscriptions on the statue has one of his most famous quotes: “The great appear great because we are on our knees. Let us rise!”

Part of the many statues of famous individuals along O’Connell Street. This one in particular is found next to the well-known Post Office and is dedicated to the man and founder of the Workers’ Union of Ireland.

I saw him, and I burst into song on the street: “OOOOOO-klahoma where the Sun goes round and round and round...” No, I don’t know the words. I love the apparently jubilant pose of the statue, arms and even fingers flung high into the sky. Of course the man commemorated was a tireless union activist, jailed in different countries, someone who worked to improve the lot of others. His life story is an impressive tale of a child put to work every afternoon who was energetic, talented and determined. Made lots of enemies. I like that the country has put him here, on O’Connell Street, among the pantheon of their great + good.

I shoot documentaries about traveling about. And this was easily the funniest shot of a statue I've seen. His expression belies the bird turds streaming down his face.

Big Jim Larkin is a legendary Irish labor leader most identified with his work during the 1913 Dublin lock-out. This big bronze statue is based on a famous picture of Larkin in an identical pose speaking at a rally. For those who do not like statues, this one is different. There is life in it. It does justice to the man. If one is on O'Connell St. in Dublin, one can not and should not miss it.

I really like this. He’s cast in a pose like some exultant singer. He was a trade union boy, apparently. Well, I do like a statue with some life and character about it. So I like this one.
