- Sightseer5141613 contributionsA hidden historical gem with beautiful gardensHighly recommended. We enjoyed our visit very much, our guide was full of knowledge and great anecdotes. The castle is very interesting and the gardens are beautiful. Its unfortunate that a lot of detailed information has been lost to time but very lucky the castle is still standing and a great piece of history that has been preserved for future generationsVisited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 3, 2023
- Patrick RNorth Vancouver, Canada3 contributionsHidden GemStaying with a friend in Dublin with a family connection to the castle, I had the pleasure of a guided tour, a delightful place still not commercialised retaining its charm and historical roots. Tommy was my guide, he has an extensive knowledge of the history of the castle and that coupled with his enthusiasm for the palace made for a really pleasant afternoon. Highly recommend a visit if you want to experience a hidden gem of Irish historyVisited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 10, 2023

For whatever reason little or no attention has been given to this little nugget not on the usual tourist trail. Perhaps it's because it's owned by the Christian Brothers but someone in authority should get the finger out and put the necessary funds into restoring this piece of Irish history back to its original state. Compared to the millions of Euro that are squandered on numerous other questionable projects this would be a no brainer !! It's ironic that the 2 people I interacted with in both booking and been guided on our very informative tour were originally from England and Holland ( I think !! ). What does this tell us of our interest in our past ? Starting from the ground up our local councillors need to push this to the top of their " to do " list and bring it to the attention of the necessary authorities to set the wheels in motion . We owe it to the likes of Peter Pearson and other volunteers who first began the restoration of the castle back in the 80's.

absolutely fantastic tour of a castle that is undergoing reconstruction in a beautiful manner. The moat is amazing, the castle you can enter many levels and rooms, you can see original and reconstructed items… the stairs so many and so fascinating!
We had a very small group of people, the guide is currently preserving historical information on the castle and a wealth of knowledge. Easy to get to using the Luas (red line) or the bus system.
The grounds are beautiful as well. The castle tour is inexpensive per person and the money goes directly to preserving or reconstruction. I say it’s a must see!

This was sort of an accidental find for us. But I am so glad we found it. Everyone was so knowledgeable and I honestly feel like what we experienced was worth way more than the price of admission. The garden is also lovely and the gardeners also have an amazing breadth of knowledge. Do yourself a favor and check this castle out. You can only book reservations by making a phone call and they only accept cash.

I had a private tour with Thomas who’s knowledge of the history of the castle and gardens is in equal measure to his passion and love for the place. As a local it was very interesting to learn more about the history of my area and see the commitment of many volunteers and specialist trades that have worked on restoring it. For tourists it is a great opportunity to learn more about Irish history and get off the usual tourist trail but still easy to get to from Dublin City centre.

The castle is hidden away between industry and as you are going there it might seem like you wont find it. The castle has opening hours but as we arrived the door was closed. We rang and luckily could get a tour but would recommend to see if you can book in advance!
The tour itself it lovely and the guide we had was very knowledgeable about the history of Ireland and the castle. He was very helpful and friendly!

The guided tour was excellent and I was delighted to learn more about my local area. It helps that the tour guide is involved in the whole restoration process so the information was thorough as well as being interesting and friendly. It's just a shame that there is so little support from the state to help preserve the country's heritage.

entry is € 9 and it's a nice trip out of the city. We didn't have a tour guide, but had a printout. Nice little castle, 30 mins by bus, makes a nice break in a city trip. The gardens are lovely. Reservation only by phone which is a bit old fashioned, but ok.

Hidden Gem! This was an inexpensive tour and a short trip from Dublin. If you want to see a castle with a real moat - this is it! From the lady on the phone who was so kind guiding us to the castle and then our very knowledgeable- historian/tour guide, we learned a lot today! This castle was a ruins and a work in progress castle that they are restoring. Our tour guide was interesting, personable and funny when telling us about the castle and educating us on the background of piecing together the history. Our tour guide also recommended lunch at the Halfway House, which had excellent food!

Wheelchair friendly?
Able to enter the castle from a ground-level floor?
Written December 31, 2018
We had to climb up some narrow, somewhat winding stairs. There was no other obvious entry but we did not ask.

Is it possible to Uber from Dublin to the castle and back?
Written September 30, 2018
Well you learn something new everyday..I had not heard of Uber before. I drove there myself. It is a short tour around the castle. It's lovely but I think getting the Luas or a bus would be cheaper.
Written October 1, 2018
Which stop would I need to get off when taking LUAS from downtown?
Written September 8, 2015
I agree that taking a bus is much easier and the bus stop is in front of the castle.

About how long would you say it takes to tour this castle for a family?
Written August 28, 2015
one or two hours would be enough to see it, it is well worth seeing though.
and if you want food & drink try the Half Way House just across the road, have a look at the lovely old style bar there.

How do we get there from downtown Dublin?
Written February 14, 2015
Hi, you can get a 18 or 151 Dublin Bus and then walk a short distance to the castle entrance. Just ask your driver where to get off.
You could also get a taxi and ask to get out at Long Mile Road, Drimnagh.
Thanks
