About
Trinity College Dublin is Ireland’s oldest university, and home to its greatest cultural treasure, the Book of Kells. A precious 9th century manuscript, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament, the Book of Kells is filled with ornate Latin text and intricate illustrations. Located in the Old Library, visitors can view the ancient manuscript, before marveling at the Long Room, considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful libraries. A once in a lifetime event is currently taking place in the Old Library, with 200,000 books being carefully removed. On your visit you will witness this historic event, which is part of the landmark Old Library Redevelopment Project. Within the Long Room, visitors will also en Brian Boru Harp, Ireland's oldest surviving harp and a rare original copy of the Proclamation, a seminal text in Irish history. Make the most out of your visit and include a guided tour of campus with the Book of Kells & Campus tour package.

- Louise MCastle Rock, Colorado3,867 contributionsAmazing collection of books! We had heard from a friend that you only get to see the Book of Kells for a few moments before you are told to move on. That was not our experience, as there were only a few people in the room when we came so we had enough time to really look. And while the Book of Kells is the big draw, the library was amazing! They were currently in the process of cleaning, cataloging and organizing the books (something which was previously done by book size), there were still quite a few full shelves with a staggering amount of books to see, as well as some wonderful bust sculptures of well known authors.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 12, 2023
- Will S4 contributionsA Grand Library and a bookFirst I was here to the Old Library. This to me was the best part ( though most of the book are gone). Loved the architecture, smell, and feeling of the room and what it ment to have access to this much much knowledge . As for the book of Kells, it was fine. I liked the info about how it was made, the art, and coloring used for it. Out side of that info, the rest of the exhibit was just fluff. For what it was, would say the price was a bit steep.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten September 16, 2023
- Mike BMineral, Virginia1,008 contributionsLong Hall Worth Seeing, Book of Kells Just OkaySeeing the Long Hall makes the Old Library worth a visit. Very impressive and a great photo opportunity. The Book of Kells was more, take it or leave it for me. The story behind the book of Kells (finding it in a bog) is more interesting that seeing the book. The room is very dark, which is understandable given the need to preserve the book. But it makes it very hard to see the book itself.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 16, 2023
- lisamarielabarre21 contributionsBeautifulThe old library was amazing. Many of the books are currently being cleaned/preserved so there’s a warning on their website that many have been removed. It didn’t matter. It was still gorgeous. And the Book of Kells and display were so interesting and beautiful. Definitely a must.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 17, 2023

We bought the times entry first slot of the day and pretty much gas the library to ourselves. Spectacular.Visited October 2022Traveled with familyWritten September 18, 2023
- CTMansRidgefield, Connecticut1,457 contributionsHistoric and FunBased on comments from others here, we made reservations for first thing in the morning. Indeed the crowds were not bad then. Bring your cell phone and download the Trinity College app to get the audio tour - very helpful. The history was interesting. Do not worry about the library undergoing maintenance - although most books have been removed, enough still remain to allow one to get a feel for the true ambiance. Enjoyed this more than I anticipated!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 19, 2023
- formerKentuckyGirlCharlotte, North Carolina43 contributionsOld Library made it worth itThe Old Library was worth the trip. They were about half way through removing all books from the library for some repairs and cleaning. It was an amazing room to behold. The Book of Kells was a bit of a let down. I did not realize we would only see two pages of an open book. They “turn the page” every 8 weeks to preserve its integrity.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 1, 2023
- Star PicucciAlexandria, Virginia172 contributionsCampus tour and Kells/LibraryWe did the Campus tour and then Book of Kells / Long Library. The campus tour was wonderful and learned a lot about the history of Dublin and the campus. NOTE that they are moving the book of Kells into a new display area while they work on the library sometime in 2024 for a few years. The Kells display info before you see the book was quite full of information - we didn't do the self guided tour because we forgot earphones but all the info was also printed in the display area. The book itself depends on what page it is on at that time but was still impressive to see it. They have moved most of the books out of the Long Library (3 sections left) as they are doing cataloging, cleaning, restoration and then they will restore and fireproof the library itself, but hearing about that process was very interesting and even without the books it was breathtaking. A must see if you are a book nerd of any levelVisited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 1, 2023
- KarenM1_101,043 contributionsVery interestingWe booked a tour with Get Your Guide to visit the Book of Kells. You need a reservation in advance since this was packed. Our tour was the last one of the day, so the crowds were thinning out by that time. However, since they close at 5:00 p.m. we were rushed out when we arrived at the souvenir store, so we only had time to do a quick walk through. I would suggest booking the first tour of the day or towards the end of the day so you can get a better view of the exhibition and library.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023
- skyjockey99Burntwood, United Kingdom415 contributionsThe library is stunning - go!Nicely designed centre explaining the history of this impressive book. The explanations and details are very good, building to actually seeing the pages of the book on display in a darkened room. Moving on to the Old Library is wonderful - it's an mazing structure, and with some very good videos of how they are cleaning, indexing and preserving the contents. I was braced for disappointment, having read earlier reviews, but didn't feel at all let down - it was excellent, stunning - and it's encouraging to see the effort being taken to preserve the books. The whole visit was excellent though in some ways, seeing the book itself is just one element.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 9, 2023

Had been so looking forward to our visit but was so very disappointed.
Despite paying nearly 30 Euros for tickets and pre-booking a time slot, we found the entry was chaotic.
We were led round to the Library entrance by a young man who never spoke a word. We were just left to our own devices with no guide, no information.....
Book of Kells (one page) was underwhelming.
The Old Library was beautiful but again, although staff were present, no attempt was made to offer any information or guidance.
There were no bathroom facilities, nowhere for refreshments but at the end of the visit, an excessively large gift shop with overpriced goods to get visitors to spend even more money.
The whole area was locked up and deserted and it was difficult to find the exit. Yet again, no help from anyone.
I would not recommend this at all and was sorry we paid the money to go.
In what is an extremely expensive city, this was not value for money.

Located on the campus of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, the Book of Kells is one of the great literary masterpieces created in 800 AD by 3 or 4 monastic monks. It is renowned for it's remarkable calligraphy and illustrations of the four gospels of the New Testament.
You can purchase tickets online for 10 Euros or for 13 Euros you can join a tour conducted by A Trinity student. The tour is about 40 minutes long. Tours begin on the first floor in a room where you can read how the book was made and it's history, the meaning of the characters and it's authors.. I think it is time to have a 21rst century interactive presentation. After this presentation you can see the Book of Kells. sort of. There are two books , one closed and the other turned to a selected page. Both are under glass and both have swarms of people trying to get a look. No photos are allowed. After viewing the book you are taken to Trinity College Library which is awe inspiring. With more than 250,000 books housed in this "Harry Potterish" you can literally the ancient manuscripts in this space. The library is worth seeing in in it's own wright.
The line proceeds in one direction as part of Covid-19 precautions. Masks and social distancing are two other precautions. Just a note: the nearby Chester Beatty Library is free of charge and also has ancient illuminated manuscripts that you can view.

The supervised walk from entrance to actual BOK building needs better explaining when you first arrive. We felt like convicts been traipsed about, even being supervised to be brought to the loo.
The staff themselves in the exhibit were not engaging at all apart from extremely loud personal conversations amongst themselves, kinda took a bit of the magic away. I am delighted though that one of them had a lovely chicken fillet burger for her dinner yesterday.
Usually a lovely visit but not worth the money this time around. I understand extra precautions are in place to protect staff and visitors but you need to disclose that the campus is closed and what you are specifically getting for your money.

I have to admit I was very disappointed in the experience. First of all, tickets were not available to purchase on site, understandable considering the current pandemic rules. But when I purchased online at 10:02, I was told by security I was too late to be let in and had to wait till the 10:30 take. Slightly frustrating, but OK, go with it. Once taken round to the book of kells museum and the long room, there was one or two rooms explaining the history, then a room containing the book itself. Up to the old library for a stroll from one end to the other and then out through the gift shop. Don’t get me wrong - it’s nice to have seen it first hand. But for the cost of the experience and the limited things on show, I don’t think it’s worth it. At least I never have to go again.

a total shame. I have never seen so rude staff and waist 36 euro.
I booked the last visit of the day ( time 4,30 p.m. ) I arrived on time and immediately I started to see the staff attitude. in the first room, a staff member immediately starts to hide the signs with the info to download the app for the audio tour, like he didn't want us to use the app. in the second room after less than 5 minutes we entered another staff entered and switch off the video explanation so my mother was able to watch the video but not me due to I was reading another wall of the room and after 5 more minutes the same stuff member came to us and push us to another room saying 'move, the more interesting stuff is upstairs' and he immediately closed the door after us.
arrived upstairs in the library the staff left us a very short time to go around, I had to choose between taking just 4 pictures in the library or finish listening to the audio guide in the app.
the staff literally kick us out less than 40 minutes after we started the view because they need to close the gallery ( at 5,15 p.m. we were already outside while they closed the door behind us )
the price is for one hour of tour and not 40 minutes, it is the most expensive gallery entry price in all Dublin ( I paid 18 euro for one ticket ) and I saw the rudest and boorish staff I have ever seen.
the gallery is beautiful and the app audio guide is well built, I don't know if it is because was the last tour of the day but we left Ireland very disappointed with the Trinity college staff. we didn't enjoy the visit and we left very disappointedly with the treatment we received.
try to don't book the last day visit if you don't want to waist your money

It’s a very small space for the Kells exhibit and I suppose we could have been there at a high traffic time. You’ll gain quicker entry if you buy your tickets online.
There were many lovely hand bound books and a video on how they restore them. You are restricted from taking photos of the Book of Kells so soak it all in! It’s gorgeous! Put your phone away or security with have words with you. Even if you just have it in your hand.
The Library is every bibliophiles dream. Gorgeous architecture.

What a wonderful morning visiting Trinity College & in particular The Book of Kells & The Long Room. Despite being a Dubliner I had sadly never visited The Book of Kells before. We booked 2 tickets online & paid €16 each which although pricey is also understandable as well considering the care involved in these precious artifacts. Entry was handled extremely well with COVID-19 compliance. We took a very leisurely stroll through the exhibition, with hardly any other visitors. The security guard in the Long Room was particularly knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We had the library to ourselves at one stage which was unbelievable. The smell of the books was so amazing even through our masks. Of course no visit to a tourist destination is complete without a visit to the gift shop where a great selection of memorabilia is available for Trinity College, The Book of Kells & The Library. Something for all ages here. A hot drink is included in the price of the ticket in The Perch Cafe which was a nice way to end our visit.. Watch out for low flying seagulls swiping your food!

My partner and I were excited to visit the Book of Kells exhibition and the book itself but we were underwhelmed by how it was organised. Visting the Book of Kells isn't cheap at all for the experience. In our view it is not well organised: Too many people are allowed in at one time, you are cramped in a rather small space and have to shuffle around many people to be able to read the displays, which isn't a satisfying experience. There is no cloak room for luggage and no lavatories on site, that means one has to go to the overcrowded university building on the other site and queue. It is sad the this negative experience overshadows the experience of the exhibition itself and the Long Room, which is marvellous. Without the marvellous Long Room we would have been very disappointed. Unfortunately also the shop was overcrowded.
It is an experience visting the Book of Kells but be prepared that it is perhaps not good value for money, since it is only about half an hour you spend there for 18,50 Euros per person. One doesn't get a real appreciation why the Book of Kells is so special and so important to Europe in the first Millennium, which is utterly sad.
We strongly recommend going to the Chester Beatty Library which is marvellous, spacious, well done and for FREE.

I only had 15 minutes as I got there right before it closed, but I’m so glad I made it. I’d recommend going in the morning when it was lighter, as it was quite dark towards closing, however it was still fantastic. It’s a stunning library and really cozy. The book of Kells was an unexpected bonus as well.

Although the library is breathtaking and the Book of Kells unique, to charge €18.00 por a visit that you can do in 15-20 minutes seems excessive. The library itself is beautiful, of course, but quite small since the second floor is off limits and you are limited to only one section.
The Book of Kells is open on one single page, that’s all you get to see.
So although I would not call it a waste of time by any means, I would say the price is steep for an experience that feels very incomplete. I have paid €18.00 in Europe for visit to museums where you can spend the whole day and see many different works of art, or whole building complexes. If you are going to charge that much, it would be great if you allowed access to the whole exhibit.

Visiting the library long room has been a bucket list item for decades. After purchasing the Book of Kehls and Long Room ticket on the Trinity website you are presented with information about the restoration projects with videos of decanting the library. I am going to see an old library full of old books not empty shelves. Can anyone who has visited in March describe the state of the decanting? Do you think there will be any books will be on the shelves by early June 2023? I may cancel the visit. Appreciate your help.

I would suggest checking with the library directly. I was there in October and they told us that the renovation would be occurring. Hope you get a chance to see this marvelous sight!

One can take as long or as little time as he or she wants; no time limit. Although, on busy days or with a group of family or friends, one can be moved along. For instance, last spring, my husband and his brother and his wife were with us, and not one of the 3 were as interested in exploring the library as I was, so our visit was not as long as it would have been had I been by myself or with other excited people. I was Ok with a short visit as I had been there before.
