About
A Dublin institution that dates back to 1840, the Temple Bar is a traditional pub offering a good showcase of Irish culture. The pub hosts daily live music sessions, alongside over 450 different kinds of whiskeys—making up Ireland’s largest whisky collection. Relax with a drink, and take a photo with the bronze James Joyce statue. The bar can get very crowded; visit on weekdays for a more peaceful experience, or before 9.30 p.m. to snag a good table. Get to the bar via the hop-on-hop-off bus, learn more on a tour with a private guide, or join a pub crawl. – Tripadvisor

- Jason NOxford, United Kingdom3 contributionsAn evening walk and a Pint of Guinness on the way backI went for an evening walk around Dublin with my girlfriend, the weather was beautiful and it wasn't raining. On the way back I heard loud music, I asked my girlfriend if she wanted a small beer, she said why not, after entering we couldn't believe it, it was like a time jump, the music, beautiful interiors and great Guinnes, one turned into two. I really recommend this beautiful memory Amazing place drinks music just perfect !!Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 4, 2023
- paris34Atherton, United Kingdom156 contributionsVery busy barVisited this bar three times over our stay on Dublin. Friday night was absolutely packed to the brim you couldn’t move we had one drink and then moved on, you couldn’t even move to get to the toilets or the bar, Our second visit was Saturday afternoon, we wanted to see the bar in the day, still quite busy but at least we could sit down. Sunday evening was our last night and we went i, we stayed for a few hours as we were able to move about freely to the toilet, we had waiter service so that was food.. overall the most expensive bar I think in Dublin I bought a pink gin with slimline tonic and it was €13,40..Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 7, 2023
- rosie hLancaster, United Kingdom42 contributionsAMAZING ATMOSPHERE 10/10YOU MUST GO HERE! Locals will say to avoid because its too expensive/busy etc however when in Dublin its to be expected but my friend & I had one of the best nights out here!! Yes its busy but thats part of it, people are gorgeously friendly, music is fantastic, atmosphere was immaculate and just all round a brilliant night out!! Even if you don’t stay, pop in for one get some fab pictures & just experience it for yourselves -Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 9, 2023
- Addicted To TravelLeicester, United Kingdom28 contributionsWorth The VisitWorth the visit if you're coming to Dublin. Located in a busy area, we expected to be waiting a long time to be served but actually managed to order drinks as soon as we arrived, which was great news. On top of that, we even got lucky enough to grab seats at the bar. These aren't guaranteed of course due to the pub being an extremely popular tourist attraction. The live music inside provided a fantastic atmosphere with everyone singing along. Overall a great experience. My only complaint, hence the four stars and not five, would be the extortionate pricing of the drinks. For a pint of beer & a whiskey with coke it cost us €25.00.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 10, 2023
- Stuart WChristchurch, United Kingdom113 contributionsPricey pricey priceyReally good tourist trap. Music was good, ambience was great, service was seamless. However the prices are eye watering. 9 euro for a pint of Guinness, was good Guinness. Lager even more expensive with a half pint for over 5 euroVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023
- fluffycamel2002West Bromwich, United Kingdom901 contributionsThe main placeAbsolutely heaving a d right in the centre. One of the most popular and well known bars to visit I believe. Probably one of the most expensive drinks we had whilst here, but managed to find a seat looking out to the street and watching the world go by. Toilets are awful. Takes forever to work your way through the crowd to find them and then there is no toilet roll!!!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023
- Jim WSindelfingen, Germany8,549 contributionsIf These Walls Could TalkThis famous bar is an absolute must when visiting Ireland. Besides the history alone, this place is just plain fun. Whether you are meeting friends or simply having a pint of Guiness with your soulmate of 43 years, come enjoy all this bar has to offer. It has patches on the walls from first responders across the globe. It has a life-size statue of James Joyce. It also has an outdoor beer garden. Come early as they have live music daily. This place fills up quickly.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- DanLiverpool, United Kingdom190 contributionsWeekend away in Dublin 🇮🇪Great little bar full of history and live music. Always busy as it’s a Tourist attraction. Not as pricey as I thought it was going to be. 8 euros for a Guinness is reasonable. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Dublin to make a stop here.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 5, 2023
- Isabel Le RouxViana do Castelo, Portugal72 contributionsThe red building that pops out from the bottom of the street - you can´t miss it.Warm atmosphere. Live music playing that I could relate to. Friendly staff that had not issues taking photos of my friend and I. Definitely worth a return. I don't drink, so was very excited to have a "real Irish Coffee" - I was pleasantly surprised.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 8, 2023
- Jasmin C2 contributionsGreatLoved this city Icon. Temple Bar in Dublin is a vibrant cultural hub. With its lively atmosphere, diverse pubs, and artistic vibe, it's a must-visit. Enjoy live music, art galleries, and a range of eateries. However, it can get crowded, so plan accordingly for a genuine Dublin experience!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023

After the last 18 months living with a world pandemic I was shocked at how this bar failed to provided basic provisions in the toilets.
I ordered my drink and ask to be shown where the toilet was, to which was later referred to as the disabled toilet. After I use the toilet I was shocked as no soap/ Liquid in the dispenser and no hand gel. I used some gel I carry with me and inform the male waiter who then pointed this out to a colleague and they discussed getting some. Approximately 2 drinks later I went to use the same toilet facilities and I checked before using it if there was soap.
Can you believe it no soap!! is this not a basic requirement ? and there’s a pandemic! The first thing we are asked of is to wash our hands with soap.
I went to the bar and asked to speak to the manager. I told her all this and she said just use the other toilet down stairs. Yes I could do that, but I feel she totally missed the point.
Staff check at the door before you are allowed in that you are double Vaccinated, they take your name and phone number.
Why I asked? because it’s law and we have to she said. So I said again is it not a requirement to provide hand soap, she said you was in the disabled toilet go downstairs. It didn’t mater to her that my server / waiter had guided me to use this toilet or that over 1hour ago I had informed staff that this toilet had no soap or that it may not be possible for me to use the stairs.
Ok I went downstairs only to find all 5 toilets had no toilet roll. Another lady also came out her cubical saying no paper, your be surprised how many people don’t bother. She waited and I went to find a member of staff who insisted on checking before finally finding a college to go into the men’s and bring some out. A que had now formed outside while this basic provision was searched for and provided. But the manger was right they did have soap in the downstairs bathroom.
It was a Thursday in September between the hours of 6pm-9pm as this matters. Let’s just hope the chef has soap and toilet roll in the toilet he used.

During our visit to the Temple Bar area of Dublin, we spent some time in The Temple Bar Distillery Store learning about good Irish whiskey from very patient bar tenders. Besides being very patient, they were very knowledgeable and friendly. After purchasing a bottle of whiskey, they didn't charge us for our tastings. Great Experience!

Yes, it is very touristy, yes, it is full of English and the occasional Irish man, yes it is packed solid where you will be very lucky to get a seat but, for a tourist visiting Dublin for the 1st time, we had a great night out. Amazing musicianship by all those we saw playing live, very convivial atmosphere and, contrary to what we had been told, prices seemed in line with other bars in the area. Go at least once.

Visited Dublin from 15-16th feb 2022 so we decided on 15th we would visit the temple bar. Nice atmosphere and busy for a Tuesday. Drinks are a little expensive and so are the bar snacks (spicy nuts €7.50 and no chips). I ordered a pornstar martini which was €13.50 it tasted very nice and normal and then when ordering a second it arrived and was a very pale yellow/white colour. I’m assuming they ran out of passion fruit purée or passoa as the cocktail basically tasted of lemon and this time around had group up ice pieces, which wasn’t in the first one, so I asked about this and a French waitress took it to the bar to query this. They had made another for me which I appreciated but again it tasted nothing the same as the first and definitely not like a pornstar martini, I used to be a mixologist so I know sometimes you may have to use alternative but I wasn’t happy to pay that much when it was nothing of similarity. The girl come over to check if it was ok to which again I stated it wasn’t the same but to forget about it and the issue was resolved, I was going to just drink what they give me and leave until a man in a grey shirt with glasses (assuming he’s the manager) come storming over to me and my boyfriend to demand there was never anything wrong and when I mentioned the price and it’s not right to pay for something you’re not happy with he abruptly tried to correct me in what I was saying. The fact he come storming over after the issue was sorted to try and prove a point and he very sarcastic says it all, he was stood close and shouting loud which felt very intimidating to a young 20 year old girl. We sat and met a nice old Irish couple and when he spoke to us like this in front of them we felt so embarrassed so we left just after but not without the manager giving us side eye from across the bar. You’re either rude to everyone or rude to tourists. Considering the hype this place has I wouldn’t even bother going, you can find nicer and cheaper places in Dublin where you feel welcome and comfortable. Shame on you manager for your poor customer service experience.

I knew this to be a tourist trap and avoided it every single time while in Dublin. However, during my recent trip there with a friend, we had a blast listening to the traditional Irish musicians jam while entertaining and engaging the crowd. It was the perfect way to end our European vacation!

We arrived for a pre lunch drink to trendy Temple Bar area Dublin and happened upon this place! Traditional music was just starting in a small but very busy bar so we made our way through the area in search of seats...it’s a big space...like a yard is...we got seated in the “our doors smoking area which was warm and cosy thanks to a canopy roof and heaters! Great atmosphere, buzzing, friendly ‘crew’, great bar staff and service.

We fancied a proper pint of Guinness & plumed for this place. Wait to get in which is normally a good sign. The place is a cavern of a place when you get inside, but hardly any staff, the ones that are there are stressed out & running around like headless chickens.
The drinks are overpriced, the food is overpriced & poor quality. We ordered a cheeseboard platter for 14 Euro’s. Supposed to have artisan cheeses & soar dough bread. Could have picked up in Tesco’s. Avoid.

Right, this isn’t a traditional Irish bar so don’t expect it to be. It’s full of tourists doing the touristy thing, which is calling in to an iconic bar aimed at tourists.........so we did the touristy thing and entered😊
We ordered a cocktail over lunchtime period, okay so it wasn’t the cheapest, but it was spot on. We were greeted by friendly bar staff and loved every minute we spent here. They even let me charge my dying phone behind the bar.
We sat on the bar stools by the window so we could people watch, it’s really a great spot if you’re a people watcher.
There was some really good live music on (a young man with a lovely voice). All the bar areas were quite busy but not packed out. Despite it being very orientated towards tourists there was a really happy atmosphere inside.
I would definitely call in again if I’m visiting Dublin.

Obviously there are countless quality authentic pubs in dublin, with live music and a lively atmosphere, but none more central or that you can guarantee at any time of day.
Yeah its busy and its slightly more expensive than some bars, but if you don't know where your going or you're in dublin at an awkward time on an awkward day... this place will always be busy and will always have a great atmosphere.
Service is good and the music is always spot on, mix of irish folk songs and irish covers of popular music.

If you're in Dublin a while before visiting the Temple Bar, you might hear some of the locals knocking the place as an expensive tourist trap. This is probably a fair description as the drinks are generally more expensive than anywhere else in the city, and indeed much of Europe. The place has a unique atmosphere however. Its party atmosphere is reminiscent of the below-decks party scene in 1997 film Titanic, as is much of the décor. While the Temple Bar is extreme, the performers and atmosphere are second to none. It is genuinely like going back in time.

Are they even open in March, 2021? It's currently 5:30 p.m. there and it's totally dark. Thank you for whoever updates their CORRECT hours of operation...if there are any. Thank you!

At what time starts the live music?
Thanks!!
Written July 21, 2019
Hi, The live music starts at 12 noon every day except saturday which starts at 11 am. Live sessions run all day and night after then until 2 am, with just breaks in-between for the musicians.
Also, there is no entry charge, so just grab a drink and enjoy the music.
