We took some pictures together. He is a nice man, quiet and always admiring the river. I stayed there for a while admiring the landscape with him. Good company

During a walk along the grand canal, we stumbled upon, a very interesting statue of a man sitting on a park bench contemplating, all in bronze it turns out it is dedicated to a famous irish novelist and poet.

This statue is a memorial to the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh. The statute is a bronze life sized sculpture of Kavanagh sitting on a bench overlooking the canal, inspired by his poem "Lines written on a Seat on the Grand Canal, Dublin".

It's a nice statute and definitely worth visiting of a fan. Otherwise it's a long way out from the main tourist itinerary.

I found this statue purely by chance while walking along the canal towards the canal basin. It is a great likeness and you can sit beside him for a while contemplating the passing canal water and pedestrians going by. Worth a look if you are in this part of the city enjoying a walk along the historic canal and towpath.

The first time I walked past Patrick was at night, and he scared the hell out of me. I was strolling along the canal and caught the image of a silent man in a bench out of the corner of my eye. The following day I walked by in the morning and he still creeped me out.

What point in searching out the statue of an Irish poet if you don’t take the opportunity to read and reflect on his work. What came to my mind when I sat down beside him on the bench that cold day in February was the beautiful song ”Raglan Road” (just a few blocks south) as performed by the Dubliners, Van Morrison & The Chieftains, Mary Black and many others.

”On Raglan Road on an Autumn Day
I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare
That I may one day rue
I saw the danger, yet I walked
Along the enchanted way
And I said let grief be a falling leaf
At the dawning of the day”

I love the Kavanagh statue. It is in the most perfect of locations on the banks of the Grand Canal, under the trees on the grass. His poems "Lines Written on a Seat..." and "Canal.Bank Walk" make the location of this statue so apt.
It depicts the poet sitting on a bench looking out at the water in contemplation. There's space for you to sit beside him and do likewise.
Beautiful monument in such a lovely, peaceful, idyllic location. It's a really nice place to visit and linger at awhile.
