We went to enjoy salsa dancing in the open in the "Grand canal dock" in Dublin in front of the iconic Bord Gais Theatre. The sun was out, many salsa enthusiasts had come and everyone was enjoying the uplifting music and dancing till the place was literally invaded by young delinquent boys on bikes who started throwing lit fireworks near us and then at us. Some of the male dancers chased the boys away but they came back in greater number and attacked our group, throwing punches and their bikes at us. All this happening in broad day light in a so called affluent neighbourhood of Dublin. It turned ugly so fast, it is a miracle no one was seriously injured. The Garda came eventually but the culprits had run away by then. All of us are left scared and shocked and some with bruised faces. Be extremely watchful and careful if you are visiting this area in Dublin and do not attract any attention to yourselves.

Grand Canal Dock is a lovely part of Dublin now. Back about 10 or 15 years ago it was run down and neglected but vigorous urban renewal has rejuvenated the area.
Where once there were derelict houses and warehousing, now there are modern appatments, leafy open plazas, trendy bars and eateries and the Grand Canal.Theatre. The presence of the likes of Google here shows how vibrant the area is.
It's a lovely place to wander by the waters edge, especially the Grand Canal Plaza by the theatre with all the bars and restaurants to choose from.

Grand Canal Dock is one of the most beautiful areas of Dublin City. It has very nice restaurants and cafes. The view of the canal is beautiful.

This has the potential to be a lovely area, but the sheer numbers of people drinking all along the river, is simply shocking. I saw one guy leaning onto the raised flowerbeds and throwing up, I looked away, stepped away as quickly as I could. Down beside Fresh supermarket - there is an alleyway with a wheelchair ramp and I saw 1 girl and two men urinating... The noise is incredible, the screaming and shouting, the restaurants are selling takeaway pints, and these plastic containers do not look recyclable... there are no toilet facilities, it is simply gross. It has the potential to be a lovely area but the ducks, swans, and herons (I think) are eating filth, the filth that does not make the bins. Zero social distance and no-one wearing masks... it is quite horrific. This is where Google, Facebook, and now Tik Tok, Air BnB, Indeed etc have European HQ/large offices in the Grand Canal Dock area. But the vast drinking and pollution is vile, and not apparent in any other European city. I would not recommend holidaying there. Or setting up a business there. The Covid incidence rates must be really high there, as no-one wears masks and there is zero social distancing. There is a 5 star hotel right in the square, the Marker hotel - maybe they should stay shut? Guests would be horrified if they saw this behaviour outside the hotel. There is also a theatre, for West End shows, but area feels so unsafe, I felt very unsafe and hated how this lovely area is being abused.

The area around the dock has developed beautifully with high buildings- restaurants offices and apartments as well as the theatre. there is a real buzz about the place when the visitors are leaving the theatre.

Grand Canal dock was opened in 1796 as a link between the salt water of the River Liffey and the fresh water of the Royal canal leading to the River Shannon and beyond.
It is a beautiful piece of water, used for water-skiing, paddleboarding, sailing (not very frequently). It is surrounded by tall buildings today.
P.S. The image of the famine victims adjoins the Liffey and not the Grand Canal Dock.

Worth a visit if only to pay respects to the thousands who died. they are by the tall ship and emigration centre so there are other things to do as well.

We went there at the beginning of the afternoon on a Friday, a very cold and rainy day, not too much activity, apparently there is more movement when the weather is nice
