About
The GPO Museum is located in the historical and iconic GPO building on O'Connell Street, Dublin. This highly interactive and spectacular visitor attraction focuses on the 1916 rising, the aftermath of this rebellion and also how Ireland has developed since. Experience the events from an eyewitness perspective of active participants on both sides and bystanders caught in the middle. This engaging and interactive experience brings history to life though electronic touch screens, video, audio visual booths, sound and authentic artifacts - many previously unseen. Relax afterwards and browse the gift shop which overlooks the courtyard. This iconic venue is also available for private functions and events.

The GPO Museum Tour is quite comprehensive. It’s not often the museum is itself the site of the history it portrays but this is the case for the GPO Museum Tour. You can see bullet holes in the columns in front of the building.

We booked a guided tour and our tour guide Abby was a font of knowledge. There were 6 of us on the tour and we peppered her with questions for nearly 90 minutes. She rarely was without an answer. I highly recommend the GPO Tour.

This is a great experience for history lovers. The museum covers the events of the 1916 Easter Uprising, which was centered around the GPO, and the Irish War for Independence. I highly recommend taking the audio tour which really connects the artifacts in the museum with the stories of people affect by these events. Using the audio guide, you can easily spend 1.5-2 hours in the museum. I also recommend watching the short film “Fire and Steel” in the museum.

Bearing in mind I paid 10.50 (euro) as a concession to get into the GPO Museum and Kilmainham Gaol is free - I felt a little short changed. First the positives, it was interesting to see behind the build façade (the court yard), as this gives some perspective on the actual size of the GPO and I did wonder what all the rooms were used for. The interactive film about the 1916 battle was also 'okay'. Overall though, the museum lacked. Talking head academics on screen? I can watch that anywhere. I would suggest an interactive/virtual immersive special effects mechanism, a little bit like the Viking Museum in Stockholm, where you get on a ghost train like car and it takes you around a circuit to interact with the history. I would want to see and hear the voices of the ordinary volunteers as they battled the British, as if one is actually immersed in the time. I would want a surprise as though I was inside the GPO when it was shelled, I would also like to see the volunteers diving for cover right in front of me as if I was actually there - not forgetting the sounds of the 13,000 British troops marching from Dún Laoghaire. Get the gist?

The building itself is beautiful, however, I payed 30 euro for two people which i think is pricey comparied to other museums in dublin. In my opinion there really wasnt alot of history to see, the museum is over one floor which took us 20mins to go round. a little disapointed. Cafe is nice though.

Hi Dani, Many thanks for your review. I am sorry to read that you were disappointed in your visit. We have a movie which lasts 19 minutes, I hope you didn't miss this. It is the highlight of the visit. We do recommend 45 mins to see everything, many people spend over 1 hour reading through the touch screens and learning about the artefacts. If you visit again, take one of our complimentary audio guides, visitors find them to be very useful! Kind regards, Ciara

We went on the tour yesterday after browsing through the museum. The museum exhibits are very informative and interesting. The tour, led by Megan, was outstanding. She was extremely knowledgable and had lots of really interesting asides that very much humanised the historical information. She is clearly very passionate about history and this contributed to a very coherent narrative. Couldn’t recommend the tour strongly enough.

We paid €37 for the tour for a family of 4, I certainly didn't think it was worth this. It was cold, poorly lit, had poor signage and we thought that there was going to be another level but discovered it was only a cafe upstairs. Give it a miss, head to kilmainham jail.

I loved visiting the GPO!It is a more traditional museum than other museums in Dublin- certainly a little less gimmicky! I did the self guided tour and there is a lot of interesting information to be covered. I specially enjoyed the fact that what was happening in the area leading up to the rising was explained well. I found the movie extremely well done- it is worth waiting for the next screening for sure. This would be a great first thing to do in the city, as i was glad to have this background info while joining other attractions/tours.

We attended a guided tour of the museum, and Nathan's knowledge and passion of this subject really shone through. He explained WHY the rebellion came about, what Ireland was like in the early 1900s, and what happened since, as well as some fascinating details that many might have missed or who may have been airbrushed from the history books. The significance of this building in Irish history cannot be underestimated, and Nathan explained why it was chosen for the rebellion.

The museum is in the basement of the working GPO building, and comes back to street level to a display of what's happened in Ireland - south and north - up until modern times. This included the Anglo-Irish agreement. Nathan enjoyed answering questions from visitors, am sure that we'll see him presenting on tv soon.

Very good value for money, and very highly recommended.

Visited the GPO 1916 Museum today and I was very impressed with how much information was available! The 17 minute long video, describing the events of the Rising was so interesting and brought it to life. The different exhibitions were clearly explained and there was so much information to read between the exhibitions, the videos and the interactive screens. As a history teacher myself, I was able to get lots of ideas for teaching this section of Irish history. The staff were all very friendly. There was hand sanitizer readily available and signs on the floor to ensure people socially distanced. I was delighted to finally get a chance to see this museum and it did not disappoint!
