Absolutely breathtaking

I hired a bike to travel around Iona and cycled along the north road past the abbey. The road eventually comes to an end at a gate, which leads into a field. There’s a bicycle rack to leave your bike before continuing on foot. As you walk across the fields you are given a sense of the wonderful beaches that lie beyond. The walk doesn’t take long and depending on your choice of route, leads to a variety of different beaches. Whatever beach you discover it will be a sight to behold. Their quality is more akin to tropical beaches. The sand is white and very soft and the sea is so colourful, clean and clear. I had the beaches to myself and spent a very happy couple of hours beach combing, rock pooling and just generally taking in my glorious surroundings. These beaches are not to be missed. It would be a good half an hour walk from the port to these beaches but in my opinion totally worth it, especially on a sunny day.

So many visitors quite rightly stop at the Abbey. If you have the time, keep walking and you will be rewarded with this beautiful beach at the back of the island

Don't miss it

You will wander up to the Abbey anyway. All you need do is go on for another 20 minutes and where the asphalt ends carry on over the grass and bend towards the right. The white sand and views of Staffa and Mull will hold you there. If it is wet take a brolly! Just don't miss it!

Day trip to idyllic beach

Third visit to Iona.
A truly spiritual place.
The north beach is a short hike and well worth it.
Take a picnic if the weather is good.
You can easily spend hours on this beach.

Iona North Beach

What an unexpected and beautiful place. A friend took us to this beach, it was the highlight of my holiday to Mull and Iona. The beach is sandy but it had stones waiting to be picked, which I did. Then, cows appeared from nearby fields. I had never seen cows in a beach before. I only wish I had spent longer there. It was February but the weather was sunny and mild. Higly recommended.

A 30 minute walk from the pier across the island on paved road with a gentle gradient, across the golf course and machar to beach of fine white sand. An easy walk. On a clear day there is no better place to be, however if it rains there is no shelter, check the forecast before setting off. Take everything you need as there are no amenities once out of the village.

Amazing peaceful beach

During a day trip to the isle of Iona my two young boys and I walked the 25 minutes to get to this beautiful beach. When we arrived we were the only ones there. Such a wonderful place with very scenic views of the bay.
The beach is a mixture of sandy and pebbled areas with rocky patches. While my boys enjoyed playing in the surf I watched shore-birds getting ever closer.
Simply a wonderful place to have visited.

Lovely walk and scenery

Easy walk from abbey of 25 minutes. If weather good then views and beaches are fabulous. The ferry across to Iona runs every few minutes and is not expensive. Iona well worth a visit
