- Katie PUnited Kingdom285 contributionsGreat hot chocolate and museumOn a rainy autumn day what could be more appealing than a beautiful thick hot chocolate? I got a hot chocolate with oat milk (a preference not a necessity) and it was thick and tasty unlike some hot chocolates I have sampled over the years. Lots of gluten/vegan/vegetarian options clearly displayed on the menu. We walked to the salmon ladder, sadly didn’t see any salmon but learnt a lot about the ladder/building of the dam in the free visitors centre. A great interactive visitors centre for all ages.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 7, 2023
- ScotlandmacGlasgow, United Kingdom14,329 contributionsGood scones in the cafe and a lovely high terrace with viewsExcellent place all round…impressive! Lovely views from the cafe terrace over the dam and river and very good scones here too! Nice selection of cakes though too many didn’t look homemade as such and a bit commercial. But no faulting the scones. Lovely to sit on the terrace admiring the view high up above all. We’ll be back soon I hope!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 26, 2023
- Weary Travellery158 contributionsUnexpectedly fun and educationalYou wouldn't think a dam and reservoir in the middle of rural Scotland would be interesting - and you would be wrong. Our tour group stopped at the Pitlochry Dam on a sparkling August afternoon and spent a good two hours walking around the top of the dam, checking out the amazing "fish ladder" they built for the annual salmon migration, and looking over the massive turbine generator floor. The visitor's center was the icing on the cake - it overlooks the whole damsite area and has an excellent indoor and outdoor viewing area. The exhibits do a great job of bringing the whole history of hydro power in Scotland alive, including all the pitfalls and dangers that come with tunneling through dense layers of hard rock far underground. The cafe is the perfect spot for an afternoon snack and the gift shop has things available for all age ranges. Recommended.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 12, 2024

Lovely menu choices, would particularly recommend the haggis and cheese ciabatta, just delicious. Will definitely visit again.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- grumpyclacksGairloch, United Kingdom151 contributionsSuperb findHaving travelled north on the A9 for home for decades we finally made a visit to the Dam visitors centre. We were not disappointed the whole site was fascinating. The fish ladder was just such a great testament to engineering. We then went to the cafe and exhibition. Cafe and reception staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and informative. The exhibition was well laid out and so good to see interactive screens etc that worked in all. Great views from the balcony from a really lovely construction. Will we be back..... absolutely đź’ŻVisited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2024
- Mark YSnodland, United Kingdom37 contributionsFriendly professional staff and great foodCalled in for lunch and was very impressed with friendly professional staff. Great food, I had the haggis ciabatta and my wife and dad both had bacon and Brie ciabatta with my mum having homemade potato and leeks soup. All the dishes very will presented and very very good quality.. Excellent value for money and with a superb view will definitely return.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 20, 2024

Had lunch in the cafe. The worst minestrone soup i have ever tasted. No tomatoes in it just watery stock with a squirt of tomato puree. Veg was hard and hardly any pasta in it. Tasteless for a ridiculous ÂŁ4.50. Capuchinno regular ÂŁ2.50 was the size of a small . The fruit scone saved the day by being lovely. I would only go back for the scone and the view but would not eat food in it again.

After a visit to the dam we popped in to the visitor centre to grab a drink and cake. We chose Hot Chocolate and Tea and the rasberry scones.
The cafe was at the back of the centre and whilst the staff were good, im afraid that it was let down by the dryness of the scones we had. They looked great but had little taste.
The rest of the visitor center was great, with a little 2 min video on how the dam was created as well as items on the wall from when it was built as well as some very old electrical items.
There was a lower floor which i did not visit.
Over all the visitor center was great and again was dog friendly.

Finally managed to grab lunch here after several stops have been met by closed doors! At 12.30pm on a Friday afternoon this place was busy though I didn't have to queue. After ordering I chose to sit outside overlooking the river and dam. It was cold initially but the sun came out and it got very cosy!!! I ordered a Tuna, cheese and onion warm ciabatta which was delivered with a red cabbage salad. The ciabatta was very tasty though slightly heavy on the cheese. I'd definitely stop here again!

Pleasant walk, good views from the terrace and good food. Have visited before and been impressed. This time, September 2022, was just as good. They are still being thorough cleaning tables and chairs between visitors. The staff are pleasant and efficient, and the food is good. Today we just had coffee, a shortbread biscuit and a cheese and pickle scone. We noticed a lot of locals using the restaurant too, which is always a good sign and what a business in a tourist location needs too.
Will definitely visit again.

First visit to the new centre and a welcome addition the the experience of visiting the Dam.
Very attractive building in imposing position overlooking the dam.
Displays are informative and enjoyable, particularly the short video presentations on the history and construction of the dams network in northern Scotland, a major engineering feat.

The cafe has Lovely views and great food, with gluten free options too. The cafe is also dog friendly for well behaved pooches, we liked the Three Woofs and You're Out rule too! 🤣 They even brought a small tub of treats over for our border collie. The mushroom soup was superb and the gluten free sandwiches lovely. Thank you 10/10.

Fascinating experience with the exhibits and story boards most informative. The visit was educational and interesting, suitable for all ages. The view point from the cafe terrace is incredible and the cafe itself is worth a visit, full of home made treats

Warm and welcoming Cafe at the back of the visitor centre. dogs are allowed in the right hand tables.
Staff were lovely and we couldn't resist the Cherry scones to go with our cup of tea.
The dam was open because of storm Dennis and it was amazing to see and hear from the balcony of the centre.

Is there free overnight parking in Pitlochry
Written August 6, 2021
yes there is free parking down at the visitor centre -it is a bit tricky to find as you have to go past 'pay for parking car parks' then under a narrow bridge and follow the road round and down, it's not particualrly well signed.

Just googled and it says it is. Lovely cafe and nice balcony over the dam which is sheltered.
