The Churchill Barriers are certainly a marvel and something worth visiting. A lovely piece of history that still stands and is now used to benefit the modern world. If your coming from John O'Groats then you will probably use these it's worth to stop and look at them. There's also a few sites near them like the Italian chapel or the J Gow Rum Distillery. They were built by Italian p.o.w to stop German submarines from coming into the bay and sinking the ships that were there, you can see the graves of some of the ships there.

A small piece of world war 2 history which has 4 different barriers to be seen or to cross, each having a slightly different view point to the next. Sunken boats, small beach, italian chapel, distillery shop all on the edge of the barriers, scapa flow each side. Great that these barriers also link the smaller islands to the mainland

We drove right down to the southern part of Orkney by way of the barriers. It must have been very different before their existence. Now one is able to hop from island to island easily. We enjoyed a bright sunny day, and the sea was beautiful.

The churchill barriers which are now used as causeways are fascinating, the shipwrecks on either side still show us today why they were needed in the first place. Well worth visiting!

Scapa Flow was the location of the Royal Navy during the two World Wars. While the Navy Brass was quite confident the ships were safe in this harbor surrounded by a number of small islands, they were shocked one morning in 1939 when a German U-boat entered without being noticed and blew one of the battleships out of the water. The HMS Royal Oak was sunk, taking over 800 sailors with her. As a result, Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered that several entrances to this large anchorage be closed by connection some of the smaller islands with debris, rocks and concrete blocks. The four barriers were converted into causeways, connecting Mainland, South Ronaldsay, Lamb Holm and Glimps Holm, thus reducing access to the natural harbor.

Provides a scenic view over Scapa Flow but also the sight of so many wrecked ships is very evocative

We took some photos of the barriers, then drove over the causeway to the Italian Chapel. What a great invention.

It was great to see these and read about the history attached. It was quite moving to see the sunk ships too

Very interesting to view and travel over these barriers constructed during WW2 by Italian prisoners of war and to see the wrecks of the scuttled ships in Scapa flow. Beautiful peaceful countryside all around, it is hard to imagine what a pivotal role this area played during both world wars. Well worth the trip to the area, would like to return and explore in more detail

The barriers are an amazing way to get across the southern islands. Barriers 2 and 3 are the ones that amaze you. We pulled into rough lay-bys just before, walked on the beach to get the best photos of the barriers and elements around it
