Very nice staff. Helpful. Lots of smart gifts to buy. Also there was a piper outside in the square who was very good. And the bakers opposite the square sold really tasty pasties. Alot of souvenir shops to chose from!

Sounds like you had a great time in the iCentre and indeed in Fort William... although now I really want a pasty from the bakers!
Many thanks for sharing your experience with your fellow travellers,
Kind regards,

We spent the morning in Fort William before heading on the Jacobite Express. We got some good ideas from the staff, including walking along the start of the Great Glen Way. Located in the centre of town, the centre offers the usual array of free products including maps, and some merchandise.

I was given erroneous info about bus services to Glen Nevis. Was wrong-footed until I went the bus station to pick up a timetable. Isn't this sort of thing very basic?
The person I dealt with wasn't very friendly or helpful and didn't know an awful lot - about public transport anyway.

The visitor centre is centrally located on the main street in Fort William and the staff are friendly and ready to help out. You can get accommodation, tickets for boats, coach/bus trips with timetables available as well as information on a wide range of activities. Books, Maps and some nice gifts reasonably priced. Bonus is free wifi and its open every day.

I made several phone calls ahead of time to obtain information about bus and train schedules. I asked for these to be mailed to me......they did not help.
When I visited in person, it was a toss up to see who HAD to look after me. Not friendly and barely helpful.

When attended, staff seemed distracted, no offers of assistance, despite 3 staff and empty except me and family. Had to ask what services they provided. Not given any advice on area or given any info on events etc. seemed like we were an inconvenience actually going in. Thanks for nothing.

We visited this information point and found the staff cheerful, friendly and informative. Whilst waiting to have my question answered, I could see that they were dealing in a most professional manner, an asset to the tourist industry and Scotland.

It's a pleasure to hear that not only did the team give you a great customer service, but that you also recognised the service they're giving to the local area and wider tourist industry.
Whilst helping people have a fantastic holiday is a pretty good job in itself, I know all of our staff take a real pride in working for both their local community and indeed Scotland as a whole.
Therefore i'm very grateful to you both for picking up on this aspect as well as your own experience, as well as taking the time to share your experience with your fellow travellers.
Kind regards,

We arrived in Fort William without much of a plan, so we went to the iCentre expecting some flyers and additional info. Instead we ended up getting detailed recommendations from Caroline for hiking routes, where to buy new gear and where to eat. This saved us hours of googling and we ended up doing pretty much everything that was recommended to us, including:
The cow hill circuit hike near Fort William. This was a great hike with impressive mountain vistas and forest paths.
Visiting the astonishing Steal Falls (without a car).
We later ran into Caroline on the streets of Fort William and talked about our activities, and even received some off-duty recommendations for food.
This was by far our most productive visit to a tourist office.

Can we get a local bus into Fort William today from the Caledonian hotel?

I wanted to know if there was a bus service from the Caledonian hotel fort William into town

Hi and apologies for the confusion! yes, there is a regular local bus service (No.44 bus) which runs approximately every hour and takes about 20mins to the centre of town. The company who run the bus service are called Stagecoach and you can expect to pay around £3.40 for a return fare.
Hope you have a great time and if you need any further advice or help when you arrive, our Information Centre is located on the High Street and our staff will be happy to help!
Many thanks,
Jamie

can we get a bus from the Caledonian hotel to fort William and how far is it?
Ranald_Gilbert
Inverness, UK
I'm assuming that it is the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh you are staying in (there's also a Caledonian Hotel in Oban!) in which case you could take either a bus or train to Fort William.
Both journeys would take around 5 hours and would require you to make a change in Glasgow - buses are run by Citylink whilst trains are run by Scotrail, so for more information you could call or e-mail our one of our information centres or contact the operators directly. Both have online timetables and booking options as well as telephone services, and you can also get free impartial travel planning advice and timetable information from Traveline Scotland.
As a rule of thumb, trains are generally a little quicker but can be a little more expensive. It is always worth checking both however, as booking in advance or using passes such as the Citylink Explorer Pass or Scotrail Freedom of Scotland Pass can represent great value.
As the previous answer said the views from both are stunning!
(If it were the Caledonian Hotel in Oban all the advice above would be relevant, but the journey would be a lot shorter!)
I hope this answers your enquiry but if you have any queries then please don't hesitate to ask! If you do go ahead with the journey and are looking for information or advice you'll find our Edinburgh Information Centre very close to the Caledonian Hotel as both are on Princes Street, whilst in Fort William we're on the High Street.

Can you walk safely from theFort William trainstation and/or nearby Premier Inn to Inverlochy castle ruins? What are the walking conditions, distance, and how long should that take?
What other short walks or hikes can we take during our May weekend stay in Fort William?
Ranald_Gilbert
Inverness, UK
Hi Bruce,
Sorry for the delay in replying but yes you can walk safely from the train station or Premier Inn to Inverlochy Castle.
You'll see Morrisons Supermarket outside the Train Station, and if you cross over their car park towards the water then you'll reach the site of the old Fort (after which Fort William is named). From there you'll see signs pointing you along the Great Glen Way towards Inverness and if you follow these markers you'll reach the ruins of the castle after 2 miles or approximately 30-40 minutes. If you wish to then you can follow the Great Glen Way onwards to Neptune's Staircase - the famous set of locks on Thomas Telford's Caledonian Canal. Return is by the same route.
There's another nice walk from the town up the Cow Hill - this route starts from behind the leisure centre and the circular walk is 4 miles, however due to the amount of climbing it does take approximately 2hrs 15 minutes. On a clear day it's well worth it for the views over the town to Loch Linnhe and down Glen Nevis though!
The Forestry Commission publish a leaflet of walking routes within Glen Nevis - you can access this information on their website, however we normally stock the leaflet in the Information Centre so please pop in and visit us when you arrive and we'd be delighted to help you with more information.
If you have any further queries then please don't hesitate to get in touch, and we wish you a pleasant journey and hope you have a fantastic weekend here in Fort William!
Kind Regards,
Ranald Gilbert, Area Manager
