We are a museum set in Cameron Square which is just off of the centre of Fort William High Street. We have eight rooms packed with fascinating objects, from treasure from a shipwrecked Spanish Armada galleon to the bagpipes played at Bannockburn in 1314. Whether its archaeology, natural history, warfare and weaponry, highland crofting life, costumes and charms, victorian times, silver, coins and medals, or even the history of mountain rescue, it can all be found at the West Highland Museum.

Firstly, it is free but good if you can give small donation or buy something at the gift shop to support the museum. It is at the high street so very accessible. There is a video of the commando and nice story. The exhibits were good. What I like about this museum is it is small and you know you... More

We were walking around Fort William on a rainy day and came across the West Highland Museum. It really didn't look 'our kind of thing' from the outside but we spent an excellent hour and half looking round all the displays and artefacts. You are greeted on arrival by friendly staff who give you a map, explain the layout of... More

Worth half an hour to an hour's worth of a visit here. Friendly staff informative and welcoming. Good displays of artefacts and some interactive. Nice balance of local and other history through the ages. Does a lot with a little!

We stumbled across this small museum, but it packed a lot of history and artifacts into the space they have. Great introduction to Commandos (we later passed monument on road north so we understood the significance after our visit here) and to the Jacobites. A bit of cultural and neolithic insight as well. It's free (donations are requested) but it's... More

This small museum is packed full of historic artifacts from the stone age to WW2 commandos. Wander thru the dim rooms (numbered from 1 to 6) and be sure to go upstairs and read the detailed displays. FREE; friendly staff.

Some good displays especially if you are interested in the commandos, otherwise the items are a little jaded and jumbled.

Great museum crammed full of history, from commando memorabilia from the war to what it was like during school days. Of course there is history from bonnie prince charlie and the Jacobites. A great rainy day visit right in the centre of fort William high street. My 4 year old was with me and he loved it. There were step... More

We visited the museum at the end of our walk along the West Highland Way. It is a rather small (and that's nice) museum that covers all kinds of historical topics from Bonnie Prince Charlie to the Green Berets. It has no other pretense than to give the visitors a desire to know more about Fort William and the area.... More
