We have just returned from an 8-day custom private guided tour of the far north of Scotland arranged for us by Robert and Sally-Ann and I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable holidays we have ever had! We were met off the Caledonian Sleeper in Inverness and taken back there at the end of our trip. Our initial plans were to visit the far north west, but Robert convinced us that Caithness and Sutherland were also worth exploring - so glad we took his advice. He is a mine of information on everything from prehistory to modern times, as well as being able to translate the Pictish/Gaelic/Viking place names so they made sense. He is also expanding his knowledge of the fascinating geology of that part of the world and as we are both geologists, we had some great conversations about deep time and the cataclysmic earth movements that have helped form the land. Robert is a friendly relaxed guide and Sally-Ann did a great job of liaising with us over recent months as we made and altered arrangements several times - at one point we were concerned we would have to cancel due to Covid restrictions, but everything came together (apart from a few unavailable options) and we had a great time. The Land Rover used to take us around was well maintained and equipped and very clean and we were soon totally confident with Robert's driving along some quite difficult routes. Their recommendations about accommodation all worked out well, including the extra level of care needed in this strange year. We can't recommend them highly enough if you want to look beneath the surface of a beautiful country in good company!

Hi Richard, Despite the gloomy weather, we still had a great day. I wont ever forget escorting your wife into the neolithic burial tombs - she was so apprehensive beforehand but so very pleased with herself once she had done it. Whilst we always hope for good weather, we are prepared for the worst as you now know! The waterproof footwear and clothing we carry for such eventualities means that a little rain will never defeat us - and a restorative tot of whisky helps too! All our best, Robert & Sally-Ann

My husband and I recently spent 3 weeks in Scotland and had the pleasure of being toured around by Robert for two full days — one day on the West Coast and one day on the East coast. The experience was unforgettable. His knowledge and passion of Scottish history was very much appreciated and his style of recounting the history made it easy to absorb and very interesting. He was also just a very nice guy that was fun to be around. The way he designed his tour was such that we had the opportunity to experience sites that we do not think we would have discovered on our own. We also feel Robert went over and above when it came to comfort, detail and service and his recommendations regarding accommodations and restaurants were spot on. His vehicle, which was a Land Rover, was spotless and very comfortable. We also had the pleasure of meeting his wife Sally Ann who kindly chauffeured us to a fantastic restaurant in Scabster called The Captain’s Galley. We can’t say enough about our experience using Robert and Sally Ann at North Coast Explorer, and would highly, highly recommend them to anyone wanting to tour the Scottish Highlands.

Hi Maria, Despite some shocking weather on Day 1, we still had a great day touring didn't we? You were both adventurous enough to hike out to Clashnessie to see the waterfalls despite the downpour and we were rewarded with some great views! What a contrast day 2 was - blue sky and not a breath of wind! It was so good to be able to fly the Sky Explorer out over the sea stacks at Duncansby for that true 'birds eye view' - I hope you like the photos we took? Thank you for choosing to tour with us and we hope to see you again, Robert

My husband and stayed at the Granary Lodge, Mey (fantastic place) for three nights with Robert taking us for one of the days. We cannot recommend Robert highly enough. He is a superb guide - affable with an incredible width and depth of knowledge of Northern Scotland. From our first contact with Robert, we experienced unequalled service. We said we wanted to view some of the less well known historical sites of Caithness and that is what Robert provided. We visited sites from the neolithic to WW2 and even saw a film crew setting up for a Netflix programme. Robert talked about Scotland as it is today, learning so much - we wished the day had been longer. We should also mention Robert's Land Rover - modern, with every comfort (even a small fridge for drinks on those rare hot Scottish days)! Sally-Ann provided (at a small extra cost) an excellent packed lunch which meant we could stop in a scenic stop overlooking an interesting and beautiful bay without spending time looking for food. Whether you want a day tour or a longer one, we are sure Robert will not disappoint.

Hello to you both, Thank you so much for taking the time to review your time with us. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the tours we tailored for you and that you got the most from your time here in the far North. It was fascinating to see the film crew turn the small harbour at Lybster into a film set for the Netfilx series "The Crown" - it was a real bonus! Thanks again, Robert

Rox and I were lucky to have The Granary recommend North Coast Explorer to help us discover Scotland's north coast. Robert is a knowledgeable and affable guide whose tour's highlights were prehistoric sites that otherwise we would have missed. Higly recommend.

Thanks for your review of your day tour with us, we are glad you enjoyed it. We go to great lengths to research the North Highland region to locate places of interest and then, using a little creativity, make a memory of your time there. For yourselves, the interaction with our replica ancient axes whilst exploring 5000 year old burial tombs seems to have hit the right note! We hope to host you again on another North Coast Explorer tour in the near future. All our best Robert & Sally-Ann
