Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

We have been here a number of times but this time specifically came here to get some photos of the castle-type structure on the island in the middle of the Loch in order to create a gift for a friend. The whole area is wonderful. It is peaceful and relaxing as well as somewhere you can walk in a safe... More

Nice wee walk. I'd recommend it, also the short extention around a smaller loch just next to it. There is also a wee shop where one can buy coffee or tea.

A beautiful 3mile walk around the loch. A bit expensive for car parking (they charge per person) but worth it if they keep the paths and area in such a lovely state.

We enjoyed a two hour walk around the lake taking in the breath taking views along the way. Beautiful reflections on the water. A must do. Only cost was parking at 4.5 pounds.

Absolutely beautiful loch! We took a walk right round the walk and it was a beautiful stroll. Can't wait to go back when it's warms and dip my toes in the lovely clear water!

Beautiful unspoilt loch in the heart of the Cairngorms, bit off the main road but worth seeking out. Lovely walk round the area, and castle ruin in the middle. Very peaceful.
