There used to be a Town Clerk’s Office, council chamber & a debtor’s prison surrounding it, but they were all demolished in the 1920s , leaving only the 7 storey steeple, topped by a working clock, and a stone crown. Amazing to think that it’s dominated Glasgow Cross for 4 centuries.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 5, 2024
- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,795 contributionsCenturies of historyThere are certain places where there is a distinct feeling of the contemporary meeting it's very elderly relative. The Tolbooth Steeple in Glasgow is precisely one of those places. In the middle of a busy road junction, with thousands of people milling around and more cars whizzing around than bees near a honeypot, stands the Steeple. Sturdy, timely and watching over the city just as it has for 400 years. Impressive, beautiful, grandiose, very much worth seeing.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 21, 2024
- jordanellie41Longridge, United Kingdom1,232 contributionsLOVELY STEEPLE WORTH SEEINGThis amazing structure stands in the middle of a busy high street at a 4 way traffic light junction. It's made up of differing sized small boulders and has a blue and gold clock face on all 4 of it's sides. On one of it's sides the stone looks a lot newer than the other 3 so it may have been restored in the past. At it's peak there are little turrets on each corner with gold leaf flags upon them. There's also a gold leaf wind compass to it's very top.Visited December 2024Traveled soloWritten January 1, 2025

This 126-foot-tall (38-metre), seven story steeple, topped by a clock and a stone crown, is the most important historic feature of Glasgow Cross. Situated at the foot of High Street, it was built in 1626 at what was the meeting point of the main streets of Glasgow at that time. Not surprisingly therefore, the Tolbooth Steeple is one of the oldest buildings in the city.
The Steeple is all that remains of the original, more extensive Tolbooth buildings which contained the town hall, court and jail. It also housed the Glasgow Council Chambers until 1814, when the council sold the Tolbooth building, which was later demolished in 1921, leaving the steeple as the only part surviving.

We made a point to stop by and have a look at this tower since we were have lunch a few steps away. It looks very good for an old tower and the clock is accurate. We haven’t seen many of these in such good shape. Go have a look when in Glasgow.

I can't believe this thing is still standing. I can still remember this structure from childhood where it sits in the middle of Glasgow Cross. Built in 1626, the steeple is one of the oldest buildings in Glasgow and still has a working clock. The Tolbooth Steeple is all that remains of the original Tolbooth buildings, which originally contained many of the civic buildings in Glasgow.
Not a must see, but a bit of history.

The history of the steeple is interesting with many wrongdoers hanged to death. Good news, not used now!!! Use the local pub for more information. You will be warmly greeted with good food and drinks at reasonable prices. You can walk from herebto the Borrowlands. This area is steeped in history and old Glasgow memorabilia. It is walking distance from Argyle Street M&S corner and flat. Merchant city is also in this same area -recommend you walk around as more history to learn and eat and drink and shop.

reading the reviews about tolbooth steeple I'm saying confused because of photos showing Mercat cross which lies at the bottom of the high street and the salt market.not Glasgow green as in photos. the Mercat cross was see info below.
The present Mercat Cross is a copy of one which stood here up to the mid-seventeenth century. The crown of the Tolbooth Steeple stands behind the cross. The structure is in the form of an octagonal tower with the cross (which is topped by a heraldic unicorn holding a shield) rising high above it. On the tower`s western side a plaque declares that this is The Mercat Cross of Glasgow, built in the year of grace 1929. Above that is the coat of arms of the city with its motto Let Glasgow flourish.

Touring the old city of Glasgow, one can't miss this landmark. Very striking looking. It is apparently the only remaining part of Glasgow's 17th century tolbooth.

This steeple is well worth the short walk from the city centre. Walking through Merchant City, you can visit many shops, restaurants, bars and much more. Then, you have the steeple to admire and take photo memories
