Not just fish, meerkats, penguins and monkeys
Many species to see, talks from keepers and lots of information. Aquarium supportive of disabled community. Staff very pleasant. Some minor works was being carried out but was quiet and workmen considerate of customers by having tidy workspace etc.
A lovely review, thanks. Our team work really hard to make our family-owned aquarium as informative and engaging as possible including making sure our many daily talks and feeding experiences are as entertaining and educational as possible. Hope to see you again soon.

    Great wee aquarium!
We loved our visit here. It’s a small aquarium but plenty to see. We had booked the Meerkat feeding experience for our daughter and this was well worth the extra expense. The staff member who did this with her (Fin) was excellent. He was so patient, reassuring and encouraging, answering the million and one questions that she had. He really made the experience for her. Thank you! We will definitely visit here again when we come back to St Andrews.
Wow, what a lovely review. We'll make sure to pass it onto our team who love hearing our guests comments. The meerkat feeding experience is amazing and we're delighted that your daughter loved it...Fin is amazing, he'll love that your daughter had a great time. Looking forward to welcoming you all back soon

    Well worth a visit
We visited this lovely family run aquarium today. As locals we have an annual pass and visit regularly. Myself and my two children continue to be impressed with the evolving exhibitions. The new brittle star exhibit is incredible. Has to be one of our new favourites. My son also loves the crocodiles and my daughter the octopus. Fantastic day out plus the location is great for enjoying the beach visiting the town of St Andrews and being able to pop back in for talks/ feedings or take a second look.

    Lovely day out!
Lovely wee aquarium! The animals all look very happy and well looked after, when we went we were even lucky enough to see a keeper doing some training with the marmosets which was fantastic to see. We also managed to catch the last talks of the day which was really interesting and the keepers seemed really knowledgeable about the animals. Loads to see/read about, was a great trip out!
Thank you very much. Our team love doing the talks, and answering loads of questions. Hope to welcome you back soon

    Great little place!
Lovely little place, with lots of interesting creatures! Our favourites were the meerkats and jellyfish. We managed to see the penguin and meerkat talk which was very informative and the keepers were happy to answer our questions. Would definitely visit again!
Brilliant, love to hear that you had a great time. Our team work hard to make the talks as fun and informative as possible so i'll pass on your comments. Thank you

Great little place! Love the frogs!
I’ve been here about 6 times now courtesy of TCCL, a local charity for kids suffering from cancer and their families. Absolutely wonderful that St Andrews Aquarium gives family admissions passes to TCCL lodge, it makes the respite a little more enjoyable! Now that I’m a student here, I’m considering buying the annual pass so I can go and visit as much as I’d like. The variety of sea life is very cool and there are plenty of frogs too which are my personal favourite. The tanks are all massive and stocked with some very interesting critters. Plenty of reptiles too, if you’re interested in them. There’s also a room with insects, some monkeys, meerkats, and a whole bunch of other stuff to see too. The emphasis on some of the larger animals being rescues is also nice. Overall it’s definitely worth a visit!

    Nice Visit for 1 Hour
We visited our daughter at St Andrews University and made a stop at the aquarium. This is a lovely little place. Very well presented fish (& other animals) in a nice location close to the sea. Well worth the visit. Having said that, it is small, so we were finished in an hour.

    Small but perfect!
Really lovely aquarium with a great mix of fish, reptiles, amphibs and mammals marine and non. Lovely looking enclosures, and the fish are so bright and gorgeous. Staff very knowledgeable and everything looks well cared for. Gift shop well stocked, its tucked out the way and you could probably get round it a few hours if you take your time. Highly recommend for children and adults alike.

I went for my Daughters 3rd birthday today 1/9/20. We paid £20 for both of us and we were done in literally 40 minutes. We spent about 15 more in the shop choosing a toy for her.

There are no staff except at the front entrance and so no one to talk about anything that was on display. All of the talks and displays are cancelled due to covid19, understandable I guess but we still paid full price.

Perhaps a discount since there is literally nothing but tanks of fish and a few mammals/insects? My daughter was happy walking around looking at things but I am hugely disappointed.

Honestly not a bad place, but as something special for my Daughters birthday it was quite rubbish in all honesty.

Thank you for taking time to write your review. We are sorry to hear your visit was not satisfactory. Please note that we are one of the few places that have not increased our prices after the lockdown. Our prices have been the same for the past few years. Even with additions of new species like common marmosets, new species of fish, amphibians, etc, we have never increased prices. However, we have been closed for almost 4 months with no income coming in. As a family run business you can imagine how financially catastrophic that was for us. During a lockdown we could not simply just close our doors, we still had a small team of keepers who looked after our animals. Please believe me its not cheap to keep so many species from all around the world. They need proper care, food, warmth, vet care, and the list is endless. We are sorry you did not have a chance to speak with any of the keepers. Perhaps they were all busy feeding or checking the animals behind the tanks. In terms of feedings/talks. This is something what we could not offer to our visitors after a global pandemic. Basically, we were not allowed to, as this potentially can cause too many people gathering in one place. As an indoor attraction we have to make sure all the visitors, staff and the animals are safe. We have a few talks/feedings in place from September; however, they can be amended or cancelled at short notice because of circumstances beyond our control, for example, when we decide it is not safe for everyone to do them, as the numbers of visitors are beyond the limit. We appreciate your visit, and we hope to welcome you back in the near future. With best wishes, Magda & St Andrews Aquarium team.

Myself and my husband purchased tickets to take our daughter and paid £24. I had read some reviews before booking and they were mixed. A number of people had said it was a waste of money and very overpriced for what’s there. I took a chance and thought I’d see for myself, hoping they’re opinion wasn’t right. Unfortunately these peoples opinions were correct. The website suggests 1-2 hours duration. Our daughter was going very slowly so we were there for around 1 hour and 10 minutes. The website also said “there were 120 different species to see”. This is so far from what was actually there. £24 for something you would possible find in a high street pet shop! One thing I couldn’t believe was that there was only one penguin!!!

The other piece of feedback is about the fact that the aquarium was by no means pram friendly. There are no ramps (other than one at the entrance which you have to go back outside to use). Given this is an attraction for families with children, you would expect this to be something you would have. I saw several other families (including us) who were struggling and commented to us as we passed them.

I have contacted the aquarium to request a full or even partial refund because of how misleading the website information versus what is actually there. If the they have less species for what ever reason, they should change their prices to reflect this. I have yet to receive a response.

The saving grace was visiting Balgove Larder for coffee afterwards as the aquarium cafe was not open (even for takeaway coffee!!)

Hello, Thanks for taking time to leave a review, though we are disappointed to read that you feel dissatisfied with your experience, something, as a family owned aquarium, we take very seriously. You correctly point out that our website suggests 1-2 hours for a visit, and it's great to read that you were there for an hour and ten minutes. Whilst we are aware we are a smaller aquarium, we really have packed in the fun. Our team spend a lot of time and effort to ensure we have the most engaging information displays, packed full of fun-facts for our visitors to read. Our team also conduct various feeding sessions and talks throughout the course of the day, this is why we make our tickets "all-day" tickets, so our guests are free to visit one of the many great eateries in St. Andrews, before popping back to catch the afternoon talks and feeding sessions. It's great to see you've done your research and note that we advertise 120 different species to see...you're correct, that's actually incorrect...we have many more than this! As for the comment about high street pet shops; Marmosets, Meerkats, Sharks, Alligator Snapping Turtles, Penguins, Seals, and many, many more of our amazing animals will most definitely NOT be seen on the high street! One point I wish to take seriously, is your comment that we have one penguin...we have six, though we don't force them out of their nesting area during opening hours, especially not just now when they are nesting on eggs, and as part of the European breeding programme, this is something our team take very seriously. With regards to being pram friendly, you are correct, our Victorian building, perched on the cliffs of The Scores in St. Andrews, is far from ideal, however we have multiple ramps, as well as moveable, temporary ramps that can be used throughout the aquarium...we try our best to make sure everyone who wants to, can enjoy an amazing animal adventure. We did receive your communication, to which we replied immediately, though you seem determined to publish your comments publicly regardless. We really try to ensure everyone has an incredible experience, and we believe offer a fair ticket price, at a level which allows us to run a well-respected, responsible, and engaging aquarium and visitor attraction. Our team have reviewed our website and believe that, like thousands of visitors every year, the information is reflective of what is on offer when you visit through our doors. Please note, the cafe is open for takeaway coffee and snacks, but remains closed as a sit in venue to ensure safe distancing in line with Covid advice. We hope you will visit us again soon, to check out all the species you have missed. Regards, Fraser

Advised to book in advance as it was timed slots. Arrived to find countless families paying on arrival and crammed into a small (not very clean space) many without masks. Not many staff on site and no cafe open just refreshments (warm) from the gift shop. Payed £46 for less than an hours visit avoiding large crowds of other visitors. Would not recommend or visit again, stay on the beach and save your money.

Thank you for taking time to share your feedback regarding your visit to the St Andrews Aquarium. We appreciate the time you have taken to share some feedback regarding covid security. Please rest assured that we have taken all the govermnet guidance into account in terms of safety after the global pandemic. We always ensure that the visitors, staff and the animals are kept in a safe place, covid free. We think that we are doing pretty well with that as there was no covid cases in our place [this includes NHS track and trace]. We understand your concerns in terms of numbers of people. It is advisable to book online to avoid dissapointment on your arrival. If we are fully booked, we do not take any more visitors. Perhaps there was a few slots free on that day. In terms of masks, we have signs everywhere and we inform visitors about the importance of masks. However, there are some medical conditions that exempt people from the obligation of wearing masks. Those conditions are often hidden, and not noticing. It is a challenging time for us all, and extra kindness on the top of covid secure is needed. Our cafe has to remain closed, this is exactly for the covid secure reasons at the moment. We are offering refreshments which can be consumed outdoors. Thank you for visiting the St Andrews Aquarium. Please send us an email if you want to chat about your experience to splishsplash@standrewsaquarium.co.uk Warm wishes, Magda & the St Andrews Aquarium team.

We visited the aquarium with our two children (aged 5 and 8) during a family holiday to St Andrews. The staff at the aquarium were very knowledgeable and we all thoroughly enjoyed the talks given. The staff were happy to answer questions too, which was really great to see. There are loads of things to see, and lots
Of information about most of the species housed within the aquarium. The only and major downside for us was the price. Although you get a day ticket so you can go in and out at your leisure, it’s very expensive for what it is. Especially when you compare to other similar days out, granted, not local ones. £40-odd for a family ticket for something that takes around an hour and a half (and we stopped and took our time looking at every exhibit) is extortionate. It would feel better value if, like other attractions, the ticket is valid for a year from date of purchase. The gift shop was also very expensive with few ‘pocket money’ options -disappointing given that you have no option to avoid the gift shop! Although there is a burger place, the aquarium would benefit from a cafe where visitors can sit down and have a cuppa.

Lots to see in this Aquarium, well worth the entry fee. There is loads of variety from Frogs, Penguins, Seals, Turtles, Meercats along with the usual fishes, eels, and other sea life, We were surprised there was so much in the buildings as they didn't look that big when we arrived. We used the Golf Museums car park located below the site which has a reasonable charge, 50p for 2 hours if i remember correctly. There is also parking along the Scores road which is directly across from the facility, The aquarium is on multiple levels and could be tricky to navigate if you have mobility issues. There did seem to be lots of ramps in areas. The cafe was shut when we visited but there did seem to be a coffee machine available if you wanted. It was an enjoyable trip of nearly 2 hours that we had and we would certainly visit again if in the area.

Our extended family of 3 adults and 5 children (ranging from 10 to 6 years old) came here one Thursday in January.

We were visiting the aquarium to entertain the children during the school holidays. My sister has an annual pass whilst my other sister and I paid for day tickets for our families.

We've been to other aquariums around Scotland like Deep Sea World in North Queensferry and the Sea Life Centre in Loch Lomond. This one is smaller but still packed with plenty to see on what would be a half day visit at most (though your ticket gives you access in and out the aquarium all day if you wish to go away and come back in).

We enjoyed the animal talks with the meerkat and penguin feeding the highlights. Due to storm damage to their enclosure, the seals have been relocated to Scarborough for now but we were told they'll be back when their enclosure is remodelled and work is completed.

Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Overall facility looks well kept and clean, Shop is well stocked with varying prices. Cafe is small but Saints Sizzle burger restaurant next door (see my separate review) is well worth a visit! Perhaps they could do with a covered/indoor seating area for those wishing to have their packed lunch as sometimes attraction catering is not always suitable for some children's tastes and eating times. I suppose if the weather is nice there is outdoor seating or you can go and eat in your car if you have travelled in one to the aquarium.

The price for a visit is high compared to other family attractions but we appreciate how costs have increased for everyone (I can't imagine how much it costs to keep some of the more exotic animals heated!) and we like to support local attractions and would encourage more people to visit to help bring the costs back down again and not just rely on foreign trade. If we stayed closer, we would invest in an annual pass for sure but we have a Blair Drummond Safari Park membership for where we live.

Try not to let the cost put you off and enjoy a visit here.

Sorry but this attraction was a total let down. Said it was an hour to two hour experience we spent 45 minutes and that was taking it as slow as we could. There was some difference to what should be on show things missing. I know things could change through Covid but people should be made aware before booking. Prices should reflect on what’s on offer it’s an expensive 45 min to see very little. Sorry can’t advise people to visit this attraction.

Thank you for taking time to write your review. We are sorry to hear that your recent experience at the aquarium was not satisfactory. It is stated on our website/social media that the one way restrictions are in place. We offer a single entry visit to mange the numbers of people in the Aquarium, to allow a safe visit for all our visitors, staff and animals. The safety of everyone is our priority during those uncertain times. Currently we are cannot offer any feedings/talks as this is not permitted by the government guidance. We have opened our Aquarium after 4 months of being closed. We have never increased our prices in the past months/years as we understand that many people are affected by the recent lockdown, same like us. We are offering an educational experience to the extent that it is allowed to. Currently there is not many educational places open for adults and children as unfortunately many of them are still affected by the global pandemic. We appreciate that you took the time to visit us. Best wishes, Magda & St Andrews Aquarium team.

This was so depressing to go to. £30 for two adults. The aquatic part is cool but the other animals shouldn't be there. The snapping turtle tank looks way too small for how big the turtle is. The monkeys look depressed and scared. The meerkats were stressed out in their small enclosure. One of them was pacing back and forth, two of them were yelling for each other over the wood separation wall and another was trying to frantically dig under the separation wall the whole time. I would not recommend coming here. I would recommend there being a staff member that walks around since there were a bunch of kids screaming and banging on the glass at the animals too

Used to love visiting here - granted it has been some considerable number years since I last visited in the days when it was "The Sealife Centre"
Booked to visit on Saturday as had my nephew and his two wee girls (7&3) visiting for the weekend. Family ticket cost £42... it took us precisely 45 minutes to complete our visit. Sadly our time slot did not include any of the talks which would, no doubt, have extended our stay. The one way system that we followed didn't include any seals, perhaps we just missed a turning?
I didn't book a visit to an Aquarium to see Meercats or monkeys (crocodiles, snakes and spiders were a bit of a surprise too) ... that aside I felt very disappointed by the whole experience. To be honest I have been to some petshops with more impressive fish tank displays. Personally I would not recommend especially for children of this age group.
Bring back the "touching pool" where kids could get up close to the inquisitive Ray's, that was an incredible experience for kids and adults alike.

Thank you for taking time to write a review regarding your visit to the St Andrews Aquarium. We are very sorry to hear that you felt 'disappointed' by the whole experience. As you are probably aware, currently St Andrews is in level 2 and for that reason as an indoor attraction a one-way-system is for the safety of visitors and our staff. This is very similar with talks/feedings. We cannot have too many visitors beside an enclosure at the same time (social distancing would not be possible). We have to adapt to the challenge of the global pandemic, and reopen our doors with some restrictions in place. We can reassure you that there are 2 pools with the seals between our cold water area and the tank with the sharks. Perhaps you did not notice a large glass doors and signs on the wall to direct you to the seals. If you mentioned that on the day of your visit, our staff would make sure that you can go and see the seals. We are sorry to hear you were not happy to see our land species. There is lots of information about them on our main website page. We are much more than an Aquarium. We are educational place, with species from all over the world. We are sorry to hear that you were not impressed with our marmosets... Did you know that our marmosets are rescued from private collections? They were kept in small cages, with no interactions/attachments to other animal from the same species. According to research, primates who are kept in isolation suffer significantly from anxiety, depression or aggression. Our marmosets' wellbeing improved significantly since they joined our aqua family. Their enclosure was designed just for them, and they have each others company. Unfortunately, we cannot bring back the 'touching pool', as they are unethical! Did you know, that in recent years it was reported that countless animals died in touch tanks?! There was even a case of stingrays suffering from decomposition in touch pools, due to people touching their corpse. Animals need a safe, healthy and comfortable space in the water. Please believe me none of the starfish, stingrays like to be touched! Additionally, they are very fragile and can be injured in those 'touching pools'. We want to educate especially children and young visitors that is not ok to touch and play with sea creatures. So, they learn to have respect for wildlife. Thus, if they ever spot a wild sea creature in the water; they will act responsibly and not touch/squeeze that beautiful animal. Please contact us if you would like more information at splishsplash@standrewsaquarium.co.uk With best wishes, Magda & the St Andrews Aquarium team

Not worth the £11 for adults to be in for half an hour. Paid for 4 hours parking as assumed we would be in for a couple of hours! So an even bigger waste of money!

No access to lifts so had to carry pram up and down stairs. Was offered to leave the pram at reception but not practical.

Do not waste your money on this to see a couple of fish magnified, 4 sad looking seals, a few penguins and the strangest of them all - meerkats and marmosets in an aquarium!?

Thank you for taking time to write your review. We are sorry to hear that you had a 'terrible' time at the Aquarium. It is stated on our website/social media that currently there is a one way system to maintain the number of visitors, social distancing. To open our doors after 4 months of being closed; we have to follow government guidance. We recommend to leave pushchairs in the reception, or take it downstairs if visitors do not mind steps. We understand the parking cost is an inconvenience, unfortunately we have no influence on that part. Our seals Nelly, Luna, Silver and Dug have different personalities, but one thing that they have in common is that they are very playful seals, and there is no such a thing like average/sad seal. St Andrews Aquarium is focused on conservation and education. Yes, we have two common marmosets-Charlie and Lola, which are rescued from a private collection. Charlie and Lola's health and wellbeing improved significantly since they have joined us. We appreciate you took time to visit us. Best wishes, Magda & St Andrews Aquarium team.
