Join your professional guide, Andrew Baxter, as he takes you on this self guided audio tour through ancient history. Go back to a time when an almost mythical tribe made Inverness their capital, before following in the footsteps of a Celtic saint who stopped the Loch Ness Monster in her steps. Discover the strange soothsayer with an obsession with bridges as you wobble across the river, avoiding the sinister clutches of wee fairies. Enjoy the myths and legends of Inverness, whilst exploring this great city's amazing past, on this tour around the Capital of the Highlands.

Originally dating back to the 12th century, the Castle was rebuilt on several occasions, but the present ruin dates back to about 1400. Everything that a ruined Castle should be on a rocky promontory, but on this visit to the town it was not open on the day we visited. All the more reason to return again. Meanwhile there are some great views and seabirds to enjoy. At present, even under the covid restrictions, the Castle is open on certain dates, check on line for visiting times.

It was nice place to visit, shame about the mine being closed. We were in and out within under an hour. Staff super nice and explained everything and really paid attention to health and safety. Little bit pricey and no student / key worker discounts.

The castle is extremely intersting. There is an informative exhibition inside the entrance building. The staff are lovely and very helpful and friendly. The views from inside the grounds are stunning and the castle itself has some fairly unique features.

i love looking at ruins and sites that are similar, when i seen this i was excited but when i went to visit i realised that the admission price was £7.50 i had second thoughts, have to say the admission price is ridiculous as you can have great views from outside and the beach just behind it was awful for a place like st andrews

Response from ByHistoricScotland, Marketing Coordinator at St Andrews Castle

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and we are sorry to hear that you were left disappointed. We have been working incredibly hard to ensure that we can re-open safely, but as a result of Scottish Government guidelines we are currently unable to re-open all areas of the castle. We feel there is plenty to see and do inside the castle, including our exhibition on the history of the site, an hour-long audio tour, and virtual visits to areas which remain closed in accordance with COVID guidelines, and have reduced the admission price to £7.20 accordingly. As a part of Historic Scotland, our job is to protect, present and promote Scotland's built heritage and we feel the reduced admission reflects the offer and helps us to continue our important work. We do hope you enjoyed your time in St Andrews and thank you again for your feedback.
