Top ways to experience Edinburgh City Chambers

The area

Address
Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

A nice stop with some imposing architecture. If you want to see the golden hand prints of some of Scotland’s finest they are located there as well. Worth a visit.

We did not enter the building but entered the square in front of the building to better view the statue of Alexander the Great and Bucephalas.
On our way out we noticed on the pavement hand prints set in stone and the words"It’s in our hands to win the fight against HIV". I have since learnt that this is a memorial to Nelson Mandela's fight against HIV/Aids and one of the set of hand prints belongs to Annie Lennox, Scottish singer.

Each year the Edinburgh Award is given to an Edinburgh citizen for their contributions to the city and the positive focus it has brought to Edinburgh from outside the country. Part of the honor is to have the winner's hands imprinted in the flagstone of the courtyard of City Chambers. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you will find J K Rowling's hand prints here.

My wife and I had a glimpse inside the reception area of the City Chambers today whilst having a walk up the Royal Mile.
We were first drawn towards the courtyard of the City Chambers by the beautiful architecture, and sitting in the middle of the courtyard is a statue of Alexander the Great taming the horse Bucephalus.
Worth a deviation away from the busy Royal Mile if passing by.

In the heart of tourist Edinburgh opposite St Giles Cathedral on the royal mile, is this fine piece of architecture, with a lovely classical forecourt in it, hive of activity, loads of people having a look around, but obviously rapidly forgotten, I have seen shopping centres on the outskirts of Edinburgh up the list of things to do much higher than this, how so? Maybe it says something about us as people, maybe we want more retail, consumerism and lack of culture, rather than this, I don't get it.
Anyway, give it a visit, it is such a fine building with so much interest for the visitor and local alike.

Located in the heart of the Royal Mile, this place offers isolation on a busy street. You are walking distance from everything yet and a quiet place just off the Royal mile. The best part was the hotel/room itself. It was fun cozy quiet. My kids have their own room and we had our own room and it was perfect. Small kitchen living space hallways nice bathroom completely modern very comfortable I loved it.

By far one of the nicest places we've stayed. It's so clean and modern amidst old architecture. It was a complete and quiet apartment in the heart of Edinburgh. The kids had their own space, plus a living area, eating area and more importantly, our own room for grown ups. It was the best place for a few days in Edinburgh! A must stay!!

The Chinese Theatre in LA it is not. Were it not for Google maps I don’t think we’d have found it. On the path outside are the occasional and well spread out handprints of some notable Scots. It’s by the entrance to Mary King’s Close if you do decide to pop and visit.

We were expecting for the city chambers building to look a tad nicer, and were somehow disappointed to see just how ordinary and grey it was.
no tours were available due to Covid-19.
