The area
Neighborhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

Howson & McFadden
Sep 2017 • Solo
Centrally located in Hanover Street in Edinburgh's New Town it has a long list of artists listed online but today was showing predominantly works by Peter Howson and his protege Frank McFadden. The Howsons are the works of a dark visionary at least one Bosnian Hog referring to his experiences as a war artist. McFadden who shares a studio with Howson and whose talent was discovered by him was represented by a striking self-portrait M.E., a double self-portrait the artist apparently holding a younger version of hims of in a foetal position, a fringe magical illusion featuring two nude ladies one having temporarily lost her head.

A must visit

Friendly and welcoming gallery, lots of stunning pieces of art to look at for many of the UK's top artists. Located near the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, you should take a look.

Highly recommend

Location is easy to find and parking has never been a problem. Staff are welcoming at all times of the day and the shop in general is spotless and a very pleasant place to visit.

The cafe is situated towards the rear of the building and has booths as well as bistro style tables which can seat couples up to large families.

I have personally been twice, once for breakfast which was incredible taste! Highly recommend their black pudding and scrambled eggs. For lunch the second time round I invited a family member who thoroughly enjoyed her visit and on that occasion I had the haggis and cheddar melt.

Definitely will be back and have passed on the cafe location for people to visit in future.

Top tip : sit back relax and let the staff take your order from the table rather than ordering from the counter. Also once you are finished you take you're receipt down to the front door cash till. I was a little confused the first time I was in the place but it's definitely worth noting.

Hello, Many thanks for your review of our Art Cafe in Glenrothes - I am delighted to here that you have enjoyed yourself on seperate occasions and I will be sure to pass this on to our chef Yvonne and front of house staff Nicky and Jo. For people looking at this review please do note that the cafe is in our Glenrothes Gallery not the Edinburgh or Dollar Galleries. (Although we do make a mean coffee in the other two ;-) ) Kindest Regards, Gordon Robertson Managing Director Robertson Fine Art
