Neighborhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

Joseph is such a rude man! Shop has some decent stuff but over priced! Far better stuff in London and don’t think Joseph bonner knows much about high end jewellery. Very run of the mill rings and bracelets but the owner definitely thinks his bits are worth the money. Sadly they are not!! My advice get better staff and jewellery

Yes, this shop is a real gem. The proprietor however, is something else. While I am sure he might be charming should he so choose, I found him to be quite the opposite. He was quite rude and very patronising on the occasion of my last (and it will be my last) visit. Having bought several pieces here over the years, I have no desire to return.

We found the jewellery store of Joseph Bonnar quite by accident on Thistle Street in Edinburgh, just a little off the beaten track. The proprietor and his staff are knowledgeable and colourful and have a fine selection of antique and period jewellery. He has many unique pieces of which several have interesting provenance, including a pair of jet and malachite earrings that once belonged to the late designer Angela Holmes of Droopy and Browns. I was sorely tempted by many of the fine precious gem stone rings. However, settled for a beautiful pair of aquamarine drop earrings. Mr. Bonnar is a charmer and we will hopefully return when we next visit Edinburgh.
