Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Another one of the many small streets with steps that can be used as a short-cut to get top the the hill and into the Royal Mile. There are so many of these, just pick one and TA should just take these off.

A narrow passage
May 2019 • Couples
I have been told that these passages are called closes as in past times they would be closed at night.
This one which is situated next to a "Frankie & Benny's" is fairly unremarkable and could be easily overlooked. It connects to the Cowgate.
Unlike the passage of Paris these passageways are not very picturesque.

Gorgeous example of Edinburgh's nooks & crannies

Maybe it's just me, but I love the alleyways that act as shortcuts between the main streets of the Old Town.

They are gorgeous medieval nooks & crannies.

When did an alley become a tourist attraction. There is no significance to this location of the alley it's named for so I guess enjoy the stairs

It is mine! I do like these old cities with nooks and cranny's dotted around everywhere, this is a lane between two of the main streets in the old town, though why this one is the only one on TripAdvisor is beyond me, as there are loads of them dotted everywhere in this part of town.

Lane
Jul 2016
One of the several old lanes which act as shortcuts between levels in edinburghs main central streets. As these lanes / closes go this one is pretty uneventful.
