Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Love going to Stramash on night outs with friends, live music band are usually good fun and prices are correct for a night venue.
My reserves would be on the lack of utilities to leave your belongings (especially at winter-time) and that it often prevents me to go enjoy directly the dancefloor.
Great time at New Year's Eve tho!

Perfect evening, thank you. We went to see Simon Brett and our ears were treated to some of the finest musicianship I’ve heard in years. Fantastic ensemble, very tight group of musicians who clearly love their craft, the crowd loved it and so did we. Acoustics at the venue just fantastic. Brilliant.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Walter Trout gig, promoted by the Edinburgh Blues Club, along with a few beers. It was a really good atmosphere as the 500+ audience seemed to really thrive of Walter's band. As a music venue Stramash is pretty good being a former church as the acoustics are good. There are 3 bar areas, not always all open as it depends on anticipated crowds, so usually easy enough to get served.

After booking more than 3 months ago for a party of 13 (60th birthday celebration) we were looking forward to a night of live music, unfortunately this was not to be due to power crazy and rude bar staff. When the live music started some of us were dancing at our seats it should be said and were told in no uncertain terms to sit down or get out. Even when it was pointed out the exact same was happening downstairs and even bar staff downstairs were dancing reply was I don’t patrol down there. To cap it all a barman then tripped over his own feet and dropped tray of drinks which got usual pub response of a cheer not just by us and next thing we were told no more drinks for our company due to a member of our company being allegedly abusive to a member of staff, if this was true why not ask that person to leave not the whole company. Absolute joke of a place with idiotic bardo staff ( upstairs as I can’t comment on downstairs staff) will never set foot in this hell hole again and advise others to avoid. We know the restrictions in place but this was just heavy handed they shouldn’t have rules in place if they don’t enforce them all over the venue.

Whilst this is a good venue on the inside with some great live bands, unfortunately ( as per several other reviews) the behaviour of some of the doormen here has been shocking a number of times - to us and other random people. One in particular, a short man with a beard and brown hair should not be working on the doors as he has no idea how to speak to people or to carry out his job effectively. He really is damaging the reputation of the venue, and there is no chance our group ( who all enjoy live music without any trouble whatsoever) will be back here any time soon.

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE A FEMALE!!!!! I was here with my friend we are both females and noticed everyone was vaping inside so my friend did too. Well a bouncer came and said he needed to show her something. He then kicked her out!!! He did not let her grab her coat and would not let her in to get it. I asked him why was she kicked out and he said because she was vaping and I pointed to 6 guys on the dance floor vaping and I said what about them? Are you going to kick them out? Women have been s€xu@lly a**aulted here and pushed their assailant off of them and the bouncer kicked the girls out not the men. They kicked the girls out once again without letting them grab their coats (it is winter) and one of the girls had her flat keys in her jacket. I will never return and tell every female to stay away this bar is SEXIST!!!!!!!

Unbelievably rude door staff. Two Saturdays ago I was in Stramash and asked the door staff if I could go inside and ask about a jacket which I left behind on a previous occasion and they all just shrugged at me as if I didn't exist. I then went to go this Saturday and at 23:00 they exclaimed that the place was "full" due to having bookings for pub crawls. They then proceeded to let their friends in (after conversing in polish or something) and embracing them with hugs etc.

The door staff of this place truly act like they're doing you a huge favor letting you in. Won't be back and have ensured my friends won't be either until the door staff are gone.

Arriving at the venue to be told we needed a mask and vaccine passport. We arrived at 6.15pm. Explained to the very rude bouncee that we were exempt and that passports dont come into effect until after 11pm. The guy really didnt want to listen. Shame as he would be turning away 12 paying customers. He did eventually let us in after throwing his toys out the pram. Then the security decided to continue with the intimidation and bullying tactics when some of our party went for a cigarette. We had just been for such a lovely meal with not one ounce if hassle and this place had been recommended to us. Our group were in their early 30s up to 72 and a few disabilities yet this place thouggt it was acceptable to discriminate against us. I certainly will not give them our money going forward eith bullying, intimidation and rudeness they certainly dont deserve yo have a job never mind my money.

Great night with friends. Live music. Good size dance floor. Plenty to drink. Watch as the wanna-be influencers pop in for 30 seconds to take a photo and immediately leave without having a drink. Top notch people-watching. Warning: I had such a good time that my whole next day was ruined. No regrets.

My experience was more than great. The place was busy enough to make it fun to be around people but not crowded. There was live music and the band performing at the time were entertaining. It was pretty cheap as well. All in all, it was an amazing night out and I definitely recommend this place.
