Neighborhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

This is a nice statue, located in the middle of George street (literally - in the middle of the road), facing the old town.

Located in the New Town of Edinburgh the statue of George IV is located at a crossroads so make sure you go round the right side of him ;)

He was a former king and it's interested to see he was commemorated for his visit to the town. I imagine it was because the city was being built at the time of his visit.

Nice statue of the former King in the aptly named George Street. Difficult to get up and close due to traffic.

This statue is entirely in keeping with the whole of this area of the city centre surrounded as it is by magnificent historically impressive Georgian builds and a good smattering of other complementary statues to boot adding to the character of this great and increasingly impressive city.

it isn't fantastically imposing but cautiously falling into line with others nearby and not monopolising the rest of the adjacent architecture.

A great area to explore and not too far from Princes Street.

This bronze statue of George IV was erected to commemorate the kings visit to Edinburgh and it is located in the New Town, at the junction of George and Hanover Street.

George IV was the first Hanoverian monarch to visit Scotland and was crowned king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland at Westminster Abbey in1821.

This statue stands in tribute to King George IV of United Kingdom. He was the first Hanoverian monarch to visit Scotland and this bronze statue of was erected to commemorate the kings visit to Edinburgh.

The statue depicts a highly romanticised vision of the king. He he is depicted dressed fashionably with a fine figure that looks like he liked to work out with his gym buddies. In reality he was shorter and much much fatter than the statue suggests.

This bronze statue of King George IV is located in the new town of Edinburgh.

It is not as imposing as other monuments in the vicinity.

We found it rather appropriate that the statue is on Hanover Street.

This is a statue of King George Iv, in George Street, at the intersection with Hanover Street, and what a coincidence this was! Apparently the King belonged to the House of Hanover .... so that would explain the location of the statue! Also his visit to Scotland, in 1822, was the first royal visit since the last one, that one being by King Charles I for his Scottish coronation in 1633! And that was a very long time indeed!!! Apparently this latest visit proved to be a quite clever and popular one too, with many Scots being very happy about it! The visit managed, at least for a while to divert local hostility away from the English! The location of the statue itself is not great, but then, many of these statues and similar monuments have been placed quite awkwardly in the middle of streets.... making it difficult for budding photographers to ... exercise their art.... If only those old Poms knew then about the difficulties of snapping photos ... Oh, well, not to worry! Such is life! Worth a look if you happen to pass by...
