Neighborhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighborhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Visited this vintage shop on stockbridge. When I walked in no-one was in the shop. A lady then appeared 5/10 mins later and was surprised that I was in the shop. The first thing she said was that everything is over £100. I was looking at an outfit which was hanging on the rail (which I wasn't allowed to touch) was £600.00. The way she was speaking to me made me feel uncomfortable and very awkward, which made me want to leave immediately. It felt like she didn't want to sell anything and it was an extended wardrobe. A little piece of advice coming from a salon owner, which for me, customer focus is a high priority. Listen to previous reviews from customers, don't assume people don't have the money, as this is how you made me feel. I left your shop feeling very offended and won't be back. Good luck with your business, but I think you will be there 10 years from now doing the same thing.

Strangely rude and diffident lady peddling designer clothes she bought for herself over a 35 year period. As a consequence everything is the same size - I'm guessing a 10, 5ft 3, so not suited for everyone.

In terms of accessories, there are certainly some nice vintage items here. In terms of a shopping experience, it is right up there with trying to engage a butcher in a moral discussion on vegetarianism. It's hard work!

Does she want to sell the stuff, or just create an illusion of filling her days?

I suspect most people, just go for a peek, get creeped out and cross the road.

Thank you for that David I am so sorry you didn't like my shop I will take on board your comments and try to be better. I hate the idea that I came across as rude. I can't think why you thought I was shy though (diffident), that doesnt describe me or my shop at all. I can tell from your comment that I told you my story as to why I opened the shop but re sizes I have been, over that period anything between an 8 and a 16 and don't really have many things smaller or bigger than that. in saying that I have had women up to 6ft fitting into clothes from here. I only have small selection of mens clothes though which is probably what you were looking at and those tend to be around the size of my husband (medium build/size). Again though some of the men who have bought clothes from me have been a lot smaller or bigger than him. Again I am so sorry you really didn't like it here but I am here almost every day and do feel free to pop in to see if you can get a nicer impression of me and my shop.

This shop is for you, if you like a curated experience, where the owner presents her items with a wealth of knowledge and stories. This isn't the shop for you, if you like to look and touch the items and dig for vintage treasure!

Looks like she has some amazing stuff. However, I would have liked the space to see it and not to be made to feel like I wasn't good enough or rich enough to buy any of it!

Thank you AG for your Review. I am sorry you felt that you weren't good enough or rich enough to buy anything that was of course not my intention. Yes I was aware that I had too much of my collection in the shop recently (actually exactly 3 times too much) to let customers go through it or even process what they were seeing. In fact your review was from the day before I shut for a two and a bit week refurbushment. I have now re laid out the whole shop to make it more browseable. It still has a lot of very curated good things in the shop and I can still with a couple of days notice bring in items from the invisible part of my iceberg like collection but you can actually now browse whats on show here with out tearing the arm off a 1920's chiffon dress.

Visited this little shop with a friend this afternoon and was appalled and genuinely upset by the hostile reception we recieved by the owner. The saddest part is that I am a local. I'm ashamed that one would think her behaviour a reflection of how we in Edinburgh treat shoppers. What a pity, independent retailers need championing yet I have no desire to do so in this case.

Jenny I thought you'd write a review and in fact I can see you wrote two. Your actions in front of my other customers were innappropriate and when I asked you to stop it was clear you took offence. If you recall you picked up an item I had made commented on how these are now very popular but terribly made and don't last in a loud voice and roughly pulled and picked at it until it was out of shape (it had to be repaired after you left). The whole shop turned to watch your performance and I said to you that "it wouldn't last long if you treated it like that". At which point you put it down and took out your phone pointing it at the item you had just damaged. I just assumed you were continuing in this same mode. The other customers were really upset by your behaviour, as was I and its clear from you not mentioning this in your review that you also knew your behaviour was not acceptable.

Came here today with a friend and we had such a great time. Joanna has created a sort of museum of her clothes and with that comes many memories of her life. It's really incredible. Very well curated from all over the world and with a real eye for interesting pieces and she has a skill for putting great outfits together. There are mainly women's clothes here but men can find a few bits, and for men who are happy to experiment with a bit of camp there's plenty! A trove of high-end and quality pieces, though not all obsessed with labels but not thrift store second-rate stuff. And plenty of little bits and bobs including Joanna's own designed pieces which are great for gifts and very reasonably priced. Come here with an open mind and an open heart and you won't be disappointed. This is a very personal and engrossing shopping experience, not a place to be breezed through in a hurry. It's refreshing that this can exist here in the late 2000-teens.

This store looks super inviting & interesting but the owner seem intent on putting customers off.
As a serious vintage collector I was put off by the unusual pricing of all clothing starting at £100. When I asked if she had clothing from a specific era I was told that my generous budget would not get me anything. The keener should consider more of an appointment only set up as this doesn’t chime with public Vintage retail.
You are not allowed to look at any clothes on the racks as the owner has to show each piece to you. Of course this should be the case with fragile and special pieces but seeing mass-produced 60s cardigans on the racks was a bit of a juxtaposition for such an elitist retail experience!
Really really off-putting & bizarre.

We visited St Stephen's Street with the intention of buying clothes and with a good budget. The owner told us that only two of us would be allowed in at a time and indicated that the prices would probably be too high for us. Instead we visited the very friendly shops further down the street and bought several pieces.

This shop looked interesting but the owner/person in the shop basically told us not to touch anything as it might need mending as a result! Well, I'm not buying any clothing that falls apart if I touch it! I would need to touch it to wear it! The most unwelcoming person I have ever met

The store is really like a gallery with "textile paintings" all very well looked after by Joanna. I must agree with the other reviews thou...you do feel a bit like you can´t touch anything (witch Joanna also makes clear you can't) but I think for good reasons, the clothes are delicate and (yes) expensive but if you´re looking for something extra ordinary this is the shop for you! Joanna also told us amazing stories about everything and anything so the visit was worth it just because of that!

Thank you so much for your delovely review Tove, I really do appreciate it. I have addressed the issue with everything being too "museum qualityesque"(!) to easily browse by removing some too delicate/rare things and by installing some super fancy glass cabinets to make viewing easier. The quite a lot I have left on the rails is now very browsable by customers without worrying about someone putting their fist through a downton abbey costume!

So happy to have stumbled across this gem of a shop in beautiful Stockbridge on a visit to Edinburgh. This is not a shop that treats fashion like junk food! I’ve visited the Miss Bizio shop twice now and have had a fabulous experience on both occasions. Inside it’s a treasure trove of wonderful finds, most of which have been worn by the owner. It embraces the idea that clothes are not throwaway consumer items. The range and the quality of the clothes is exceptional along with the shopping experience, which is charming and very personal. Be prepared – it’s not a shop for casual browsing, it’s for those with a love for unique and beautiful clothes.

Thank you so much for your lovely review it gave me quite a boost. Just to let you know I went through a big refurbishment a week or two after your visit and now have set up the shop to make browsing possible. It somehow still looks pretty full but it has a third of the stock. I am still very happy to walk people through the process of finding the item that suits them better than they would expect but customers now can just have a quick spin through the rails. Its still just the nicer end of vintage fashion though as in the last 35 years I never really purchased the basics as vintage!
