Danny our guide, was outstanding. He made the trip memorable for both myself and my wife. H.O.S. has a gem of an employee there. The bus is spotless and comfortable and with a total of only 16 people on board it becomes very friendly. We usually rent a car and stay at B&Bs when in Europe but I honestly did... More

James was a great guide who told us great Scottish stories other than providing interesting information on the history and geographical location of the Highlands. Our stay in Skye was an amazing one; the B&B that HoS booked for us was definitely wonderful. My parents and I enjoyed the entire trip and the beautiful views that you can only get... More

We did the tour that includes Stirling Castle one day - booked only one day before - and the Best of Scotland tour the next day. Both were excellent. But Helen, our guide for the second tour, was our favorite. She was personable, flexible and just overall an excellent guide who did most of the activities with us. Seating is... More

Thanks to James' passion for Scotland and the Highland he passed along some very amazing stories of fairy tales, giants monsters with pleasantly humorous captions which are part of the fabric of this beautiful and intriguing land! Everything was perfect; the accommodations, the numerous expeditions, the exceptional picture taking spots, restaurants, bars and the great great music in the magic... More

My sister and I had just a short visit in Edinburgh and, while there, decided on the spur of the moment to book a tour. After reading positive reviews of Heart of Scotland, we booked the 1 day trip to Lindisfarne and Alnwick. Our driver Iain was absolutely wonderful. He was knowledgeable and funny and even managed to stay upbeat... More

The overnight trip through the Highlands includes multiple stops for scenic pictures, snacks, bio breaks, lunch and an opportunity to take a cruise on Loch Ness before stopping in Inverness for the night. Our accommodations in Inverness were arranged by Heart of Scotland and were wonderful - the White Inn - a pretty-as-can-be guesthouse not far from the city center.... More

This was our first time visiting the Scottish Highlands and we picked the tour 7 with Scott. The guide had interesting stories to tell and was cooperative, he charged our dying phone & made... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
