Neighborhood: Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

This is a small social enterprise which displays the work of independent craft makers and artists who work in Scotland. There is a wide variety of things from candles to photographs to jewellery. All very competitively priced.

I was looking for a necklace for myself but wanted something different, that no one else had. I found a lovely necklace at ICE and i loved it. The staff were all very kind and helpful and it's great to know that everything was handmade in Scotland by independent artists. Thank you ICE.

ICE was a real find for me and makes a welcome change from so many other 'Scottish goods' outlets. The products on sale are beautiful, original and often quirky in a good way and the fact they sell products at all prices makes the shop inviting. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about what they sell but are happy for you to just browse.

If you are looking for something unique, that is the place you must visit ! I always wanted to buy a painting of Edinburgh, but I did not want to have something which is available in every single store with the scottish gifts etc. I wanted to have something special and unique and I found it in ICE.
Thank you!
Thank you!
