Neighborhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighborhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Great Find!!

Staying just along the road we noticed this while walking back to our hotel after supper, and what a great wee find in Stockbridge it was. Quirky, friendly bar with great music played from an assortment of vinyl. Loved it and would certainly go back.

Vinyl and Stout

Sir Henry at Futtocks End in Stockbridge, yes it was if mine host was Vivien Stanshalls younger brother.
A warm welcome in difficult times - if only we could return to the bygone era created by Hugo.
Watching this fellow turn tricks with a mallet and a lump of stem ginger was truly awesome to use the modern parley.
The magicians assistants were great, the vinyl eclectic, a considered selections of Ales and stouts with the Magic Porridge Oatmeal Sout my stand out beverage topped off an experiance the made for a memorable weekend - yes we returned several times. Best wishes for the future.

Overload off trying to be quirky and different but it’s not, it’s all very superficial . Terrible service and ambiance.

Quite the rudest barman
Aug 2021 • Friends
We had barely stepped over the threshold when the bartender barked at us about wearing a mask. When I explained that one of our party was exempt, he wasn’t having it. In fact, he said they were exempted from serving people without masks. This has been passed on to the licensing committee as this is clearly discriminatory. Otherwise….. it saddens me to find such rude, inhospitable staff in this beautiful city. Do yourself a favour and walk past this establishment. It is not worthy of your custom.

What a hidden gem! Took a walk down Leith walkway from Dean's village and ended at Stockbridge having worked up quite a thirst. Stumbled in here, planning only to have one drink but then stumbled out again after about 3 pints and 3 cocktails! The cocktails are all outstanding, and very reasonably priced. The owner Hugo is a true gentleman, and told us some great stories while we were there. I can't wait to visit Edinburgh next time just to come here again!

This bar DOES NOT WELCOME CUSTOMERS THAT ARE EXEMPT FROM WEARING A MASK.

This bar DOES NOT WELCOME CUSTOMERS THAT ARE EXEMPT FROM WEARING A MASK.

A person exempt from wearing a mask is NOT legally required to do so if they can prove their exempt status.

I was shocked at the weekend to witness the landlord refuse entry to a polite middle aged man that was exempt from wearing a mask, despite the man offering his NHS exemption certificate as proof of his exemption. The landlord was actually rather rude to the poor chap.

It worries me greatly that a bar in Edinburgh is discriminatory on this basis. This is a slippery slope for us. I will not be visiting this bar again, despite having previously enjoyed doing so.

This policy needs to be advertised prior to entry to St Bernards bar.

Untrained bar staff.

A change of bar staff and the great wee pub changed. Barman lost the plot and phoned the police over a minor misunderstanding. Other guests tried to calm the barman down to no availed. Totally over the top response. I ended up in the back of a police car. The man needs some retraining

Great wee pub, all staff were really hospitable and friendly. Relaxed atmosphere and good choice of drinks. Can't wait to revisit so we can check out the speakeasy upstairs. Wish it was my local!
