The area
Address
Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

What?????
Jun 2016 • Friends
We popped in to this place because it is recommended in Rick Steves's guidebook (still trying to figure that one out ). A whole wall dedicated to Scrabble tiles jewelry (?) and some jars of candy were the bulk of what this shop had to offer. The lady running this place started out okay until she started in on American politics. Her comments were offensive, and she came off as a little off her rocker (maybe what keeps her shop recommended? ). We never did try any candy, so if you can stave off any political conversations, there may be candy worth trying.

A Classic Candy Experience
Jul 2015 • Family
This shop is an experience. Candy is an experience in Britain and Scotland and this is a place to explore it. The proprietress is delightful and hugely knowledgeable about candy, and she shares with you so much info. There are real differences between US candy and the candy here. When I was there a northern Irish couple were on a pilgrimage, getting candies from their childhood, while I ended up with 10 bags of new discoveries, delightful hard licorices, licorice suckers, rhubarb and clove candies, juicy very old fashioned jelly beans, pontefract cakes, etc. to me it was both an interesting cultural experience as well as a culinary one.

Lovely shop. Shame about the service...
May 2015 • Friends
We had heard great things about this shop and had visited it with the intent to bring back some gifts for my niece and nephew. When we found the shop, the windows were beautifully decorated and there was such a variety of products that we understood why this shop had been so highly reviewed. It is a beautiful little treasure. When we walked into the shop there was a group of teenage girls chatting with the cashier about movies, TV Shows, etc. we had a look about and there was a lot of products that we were interested in purchasing but we couldn't see a price on some of the items. Unfortunately, we were not offered any help or advice. As it's such a small shop, I accidentally knocked a frame while I was looking through some prints. we had no dialogue with the staff to see what they had, which is unfortunate because it may have prevented the need for me to look through them. As I lifted it back up and checked for damage(there was no damage) the conversation came to a halt and I was not offered any help with finding anything. Instead, the cashier began to tell her audience about a customer who knocked an item and caught it and still let it drop, which was rude and unnecessary. It was the only place on our visit to edinburgh that didn't have a friendly service, which was such a shame, as we had banked on getting most of our gifts there... We decided to leave the shop, as we were not very comfortable browsing after that. As we left, we felt that we got a very sarcastic 'goodbyeeee' . Overall, the cashier seemed more interested in impressing the young girls than checking if any other customers had any questions or needed any help. We have since learned that there are a lot of retro sweet shops and gift shops in edinburgh with friendly helpful staff. Perhaps the cashier was annoyed that the tourists came into the shop, knocked a frame and bought nothing.... I don't know, but that's the impression we left with.. It was just very disappointing with the poor service, poor atmosphere and lack of help/info.

Eclectic!
Apr 2015 • Couples
This is a wonderful find amid the various little shops on and around The Royal Mile. Sweets - all kinds of sweets and licorice. And then the unique art jewelry. Lovely one-of-a-kind pieces. And the owner is a treat in herself. Quite enjoyed our talk with her and looking around her shop. Definitely a must stop on your Royal Mile Walk.
