About
Traditional Edinburgh pub, with over 450 whiskies it has one of the biggest collections In the cuty. Very reasonably priced. Cask marque accredited we always have 6 cask ales on tap. It got its nickname the Diggers as it’s Situated between 2 grave yards, It wasn’t uncommon to see local grave diggers quenching their thirst after burying the dead

Don't go on quiz night
Nov 2021 • Friends
Never felt like I needed to write a review before but I have never been looked at by such contempt by a barman before. I was in on Sunday, it seems they have 2 on (there was a quiz so it was busy) 1 to serve and 1 to clean lines. Perhaps everyone serving would be a good idea on a busy night.

Brilliant pub
Nov 2021 • Friends
Had a fantastic time at the Athletic Arms. Visited before going to watch Hearts v Dundee United. Not been before and wanted a pub to watch man city v man united. Cracking friendly pre match atmosphere. Great beer at reasonable prices. Place was packed but the amazing bar staff got us served every time in less than a couple of minutes.

Highly recommended. Definitely going again when next in Edinburgh

Best pub in Edinburgh.
Sep 2021 • Business
By far the best pub in Edinburgh if you want to experience exactly what a pub should be like. The quality of the beer is second to none. Try the “Diggers 80” as a recommendation. The choice of Whisky is amazing. The pies in my opinion are the best quality and taste you can get. The staff are so friendly and this makes the customer experience really stand out in comparison to other pubs. All of the above plus the value for money is exceptional.
So if you are visiting Edinburgh make your way to the “Diggers” you won’t be disappointed.

Brilliant Pub! amazing whisky selection also
Aug 2020 • Friends
given the pandemic and rules this pub is on top with its process to ensure safety of everyone inside as not all pubs are doing it so it made me feel safe to enter. It was my first time there and also I tried their craft ale while on my visit “diggers” was worth the try! There was a lovely young girl who helped me and friends on a selection of whisky’s which were also spot on to tastes we aimed for

Anyone who enjoys a pie pint and chat this is definitely the place for you to pop into even just to look at their history all over the walls or ask the staff or even the older customers on the history of the pub also still had the proper traditional pub look which is rare these days, The snug has the whisky wall which is amazing to look at for knowledge of where they are made. Keep up the good work guys I will definitely be back in the up coming weeks!

Shocking management
Aug 2020 • Friends
Just tried to go into this establishment when I was greeted by a young lady who clearly didn’t want us there or want any new guest. Was asked if we had a mask, and told it was mandatory even though I have a exempt health condition, which was laughed at and claime I was lying. So was refused entry when we had previously called to ask if they were still open. Other clients in the pub clearly not wearing any face masks. When asked why was told to ask Nicola Sturgeon why we weren’t allowed to enter. Shocking customer service, after phoning and booking and nothing was said to us!!!

Having spoken to the staff member you refer too and viewing cctv I can now reply to your ‘review’ We ask everyone if the can wear a mask on entry and to the toilet to mitigate the risk to our staff and customers as we do not meet the 2m criteria. Once seated masks may be removed. Asked if you could wear a mask you all laughed and said you were all exempt. A member of the public did laugh and comment how ‘unlucky your group was to all suffer hidden disabilities’ your group then swore at my staff member when she asked to take your temperature, again another precaution to try and mitigate anyone coming into the pub with a fever. As your exempt from wearing a mask I thought you’d appreciate our increased measures. Continuing to swear about my staff, temp checks and Nicola sturgeon you were advised you were being refused entry. You or one of your group claimed to work in another bar and that all these precautions were bull$|it. It would be interesting to see what procedures you have in place to protect your customers and staff. I don’t expect to see you or your group back in the venue again. Good day.

Worth a look here

My 1st time here.
Little bit out of centre, but worth the effort.
Felt safe in these strange covid times.
Diggers 80 shilling was the best beer of the weekend in Edinburgh

So happy to be in our football seats enjoying a great pint. Well done for making the pub Covid secure. Well organised and spotlessly clean. Thank you Kev and the team.

Great pint, poor staff

If you like surly, self important, conceited bar staff, then the”diggers” is your nirvana!! Quite what they may be pontificating remained to be apparent ? However one look’s forward to understanding a far more cerebral way of life with any future visits !!

Not impressed
Feb 2020
This is one of the few old style pubs left in Edinburgh it is renowned for its whiskys, it welcomes dogs, serves snacks and the locals are friendly. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for some of the younger staff who are choosy about whom they serve and when they do condescend do not have the manners to inform the customer if they need to change a tap thus losing the custom. They need to be told that their job depends on their being polite to all the customers.
