Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

What a fantastic bunch of musicians playing captain beef heart and original material. Best gig I’ve seen for years. If you like rock ,jazz this is for you. Orange claw hammer.

Dive bar? Pits more like.
Aug 2018 • Couples
I’m not averse to a dive bar; in fact I’ve visited many over the years, but this place really is a “dive” and not in a good way. In fact it’s less dive and more “pits”.

We went to see a band when visiting for the Fringe otherwise we wouldn’t have entered the place. Or if we had entered just looking for a drink we would have turned around and left immediately.

From the miserable rude moustachioed woman on the door taking tickets with not an ounce of social grace in her, the indifferent girl behind the bar (who was more interested in eating her dinner than serve drinks) the absolutley disgraceful state of the toilets and the sheer filth everywhere it was a truly awful place.

Apparently some previous customers have actually eaten here. Wonder if they’re still alive? This place needs to be shut down on health and safety gounds.

Lunch
Jul 2017
I was visitng my Parents, who live in Edinburgh and we popped into Henry's for a bite of lunch, just after the main lunch crowd had departed. Great place with great food and good service. Will definitely go back for the tapas style of service.

unpretentious, cool bar
Mar 2018 • Friends
we are locals who came here recently because it was one of the few places open til 3 on a weeknight. the staff were very friendly, the bar was lively but not too busy that you couldn't find somewhere to sit, and the music was excellent. every other song we would look up and try to find because we liked them so much.

Nothing special was going on when I visited but it was still an okay place to have a late drink with friends.

Cool music, great atmosphere.

Edinburgh Fringe event in the titchy cellar bar with live music..and very good the band were as well. It was a tad warm but that was down to the place being full and the joint was definitely jumping. Had a pleasant drink and listened to some good music. Great location as well, just off Lothian Road, right in the heart of the city. Regular live music so I'll be going back.

Brilliant place for live music
Mar 2015 • Couples
This place was recommended by a friend who was in Edinburgh about 3 months ago. We arrived a little early (about 7-ish) and they were just setting up the equipment for the evening. The bar staff were friendly, the drinks were cheap and the music was really good (they had a rock/indie evening) The music finished at around 11, the bar then weirdly closed for an hour so they could set up for the evening where there would be dance music (dance/trance music wasn't our taste so we decided to leave)

Just superb! What live music should be like. Really engaging bar staff. Lovely feel to the place. I would like to see Trip Advisor remove the toxic review from the ex. employee who lives upstairs!

Such a wonderful reception. Great live music, atmosphere, entertaining staff. A real asset to the Edinburgh live music scene. It's places like this that make cities a great place to visit and live. This is the kind of place to treasure. Rough around the edges, growing and morphing but aren't all the best places?
