Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Wet and cold day forecast for today so my partner and myself decided to go to The Cameo to watch The Batman. We booked the tickets with ease. You have to use credit card as there’s no options for PayPal, Apple Pay or others. Website says open 15 mins before. On arrival the cafe had definitely been open longer. Shame they didn’t advertise that. Took our seats. Comfy as they were, unfortunately the screen we were in, screen 1 was absolutely freezing! I have never been so cold in a cinema before. There were staff constantly in and out of the fire escape door which was a real nuisance! Light beaming In every 5 minutes. Then came the drilling from behind the scenes which we could hear over the film. The screen we were in had definitely seen better days. The ceiling needs a complete overhaul and the heating turned on. I would definitely not recommend going which really is a shame as we love supporting Independent businesses.

The Cameo is just over a hundred years old and is I believe the last remaining cinema that's built into a tenement block. The cinema retains a lot of its original features and old world charm and is perfect for watching a broad range of films from classics to new releases. There is absolutely nothing better than watching 'It's a Wonderful Life' in the Cameo on Xmas eve!

The bar / cafe are has been recently refurbished and is an improvement, but perhaps a bit of a missed opportunity. It is however reasonably priced and I often pop in for a coffee when in town.

The smaller screens are more intimate and include double seats for couples. Whilst I prefer the charm of the main screen the smaller screens are perfectly comfortable.

I have been a member for a number of years now and benefit from reduced tickets, food, and drinks.

This place will take you back in time: either to when you didn’t exist, when you were young or when you last visited Cinema Rif in Tangiers.
Friendly staff throughout and a lovely option to take alcoholic drinks or tea and coffee from the cafe into the screening.
The French Dispatch ensured the experience was a complete success. Enjoy!

I'd like to point out that I've been visiting the Cameo since the 90s and I've never walked out of a film before. But I had the misfortune of having my friend book a ticket to Aftersun last night which was being shown in Screen 2.
We had seats at the end of the room furthest away from the entrance. Due to the angle of the screen (facing away from us) and the fact that our seats were not aligned with the edge of the screen, it was impossible to view what was being shown. I had a sore neck before the adverts had even finished showing.

An absolute disaster of a cinema, completely unfit for purpose. I walked out.

We're lucky to have the Cameo in Edinburgh. It's a cinema with character and a great selection of films. But they have botched the overhaul of Screen 2. The screen is way too large for the space, and you're either so close that the picture judders, or you're at such an angle it is foreshortened - or both!

I hesitate to say a bad word about the Cameo as I'm all for what it stands for and the bar is nice and the staff are always great but I will always check from now on if the film I want to see is in screen 2 as it really is just an afterthought. Screen tiny, sound poor, seats in the front row ridiculously close to the screen.

It is my 3rd visit and possibly my last at this cinema. Went there with my son who is a student because of the convenient time of the screening. They gave us middle seats at cinema 2, if you can call it a cinema. It only had 3 rows. Nice seats. Luckily we were seated at the second row in the middle. The side sits at the price they charge... No thanks. The people going to the restrooms had to pass in front of the screen!!! The room was like a home cinema setting at an expensive IMAX price! Cost £23.5 for 2 tickets....

The Cameo is probably my favourite place in Edinburgh. Brilliant cinema with a great selection of new and old films, a great staff, a cozy bar with good music and great student offers. The student membership is a must for all student cinema lovers in Edinburgh.

During my screening of Strangers on a Train a woman in my row masturbated and occasionally quietly moaned which is the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced at the cinema but you can rest assured that this is not something that usually happens at this location. Definitely pay it a visit on your trip to Edinburgh.
