A "Destination" or simply a rainy day delight.
Jun 2015 • Solo
It was a rainy Sunday in June. What I wanted to see was closed. A mood of "Why does Scotland hate tourists?" gripped me. This specialty bookstore cheered me up. I saw books from my childhood, of my older siblings, my parents and grandparents childhoods!
What a nice compliment to my visit to The Museum of Childhood not many doors away the previous day!
I bought a book I'd loved as a kid for a young relative.

My favourite bookshop

I visit nearly every time I am in Edinburgh and don't think I've ever left empty-handed. The difficulty is deciding what to leave behind as I'm usually flying with hand luggage only!

My kind of bookshop

Intended for adults (Old Children) rather than kiddies, this little shop on the Royal Mile is packed with children's books, annuals, periodicals and comics from the past. Girls (of a certain age) will remember Girls Crystal, School Friend, Girl: old boys will recall Hotspur, Rover, Adventure, Eagle. Classics aplenty and dozens of Enid Blyton, Capt. W. E. Johns, Richmal Crompton and many, many more. A treasure trove for those who love children's books, particularly those from the "Golden Age". This is also the home of "Greyladies - Well mannered books by Ladies Long Gone". I thought the prices reasonable and the books well displayed and in good condition.

Overpriced and unfriendly

Large selection of children's books well displayed. However prices were high and the lady serving? Owner was haughty and unfriendly. Very off putting and intimidating. Pity as it soiled what would have been a lovely browse

The Old Children's Bookshelf is a quaint little bookshop situated on Edinburgh's Royal Mile which specialises in second hand children's books. It has a fascinating collection of out of print authors at reasonable prices. If you like school stories from the 1940s or the historical novels of Rosemary Sutcliffe you will be enthralled. It's more than likely that you will come across something that you loved as a child. I found Alan Garner's 'Moon of Gomrath' and even a 'Dr Kildare Annual' from the old television series. Lovely, nostalgic, browsing.
