Neighborhood: Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

A lovely little church.

This is a lovely little church, tucked away at the entrance of the Regent gardens.
What we found particularly interesting about this church is the unique mixture of bricks from which it was built.

A beautiful church and warm welcoming congregation!!

On Royal Terrace Drive at the base of Calton Hill is this lovely church. We heard the bells calling while we were sightseeing on Calton Hill and hiked down to attend the service. The pastor and wife were particularly warm and inclusive. We were grateful to have been there!!

Nice little church near Calton hill

I passed by this church on a bus and admired it, then saw it again when I was up Calton hill, pretty standard design for an old church, but then aren't most old churches beautiful buildings anyway?

A nice little church on a big Edinburgh hill
Aug 2011 • Solo
I walked past this church every day, as my hotel was just behind it. It is beautifully located on the edge of Calton Hill and has a marvellous view looking over the centre of Edinburgh. Indeed the name of this church is derived from its location on the ‘green side’ of Calton Hill. The church itself is a nice old building, with beautifully maintained lawns. Worth a look if you are from this side of Edinburgh.
