Established in 2010, Edinburgh Photography Tours is the number one ranked...

Established in 2010, Edinburgh Photography Tours is the number one ranked photography tour in Edinburgh, all of Scotland and the number one ranked photography tour in Europe. James Christie is a world renowned and internationally published, professional photographer and he will take you on a four hour walking / photography tour around all the major attractions in Edinburgh's vibrant and famous historic Old Town. Edinburgh Photography Tours Limited were accredited with an "excellent standard" grading by Visit Scotland, Scotland's national tourist board. In addition we have were awarded TripAdvisor's prestigious Certificate Of Excellence for the year 2015, our fourth year in a row winning this award. We are also ranked as number one of all tours in Edinburgh by USA today. James Christie has established himself as one of the leading photographic instructors in the world with plaudits from all over the globe.

As a native of Edinburgh, James will provide an historical account of each attraction visited. His goal is to help you get the best from your camera (SLR, DSLR, Bridge, Compact, even your smart-phone) and show you how to compose professional and memorable shots of Edinburgh. If your camera has the ability to shoot in manual mode, James is confident that after this tour, you will never go back to any of the programmable modes ever again. James shows you how to take each photograph and reviews each shot and guarantees that each participant will take home stunning photographs of Edinburgh that can be displayed and enjoyed for many years to come.

The tours are aimed at all levels of photographer, from absolute beginner to experienced professional. James does not use confusing jargon, preferring to explain things in a simple to understand manner. James is friendly, patient, polite and encouraging.

Edinburgh Photography Tours were established in 2010, the first photography tour of its kind anywhere in the world. We work very hard to ensure our clients have a first class experience on our tours and we continue to strive for excellence every day.

The tours start at 10am daily (Monday - Sunday) and last approximately 4 to 5 hours. The cost of the tour is £60 (with a maximum of 10 participants per tour) or a four hour private tour can be booked for £400 (Please e-mail James for further details). Please note: Our Tours always go ahead whether we have one person booked or the maximum of ten people. Tours start in front of the National Monument on Calton Hill at the east end of Princes Street, access can be gained from Waterloo Place and you will always be tutored by James Christie.

I went on this 'tour' with my daughter (27) - she had just received a camera and I have been fiddling with photography for a number of years but tended to just control aperture and took boring pictures. Well James has helped move us to a new level in terms of both understanding our cameras and composing better shots. We... More

My wife and I had a private tour with James to allow us to achieve a couple things: 1) visit some of the Edinburgh photographic hot spots, 2) learn more about our cameras and how to use them 3) to have a fun day out and take some pictures. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone new to photography... More

Had an amazing time with James: as funny and entertaining than educational. I Would clearly recommend the tour to anyone, you'll get out with an improved photographic skill and stories of the city.

This is a trip I would recommend most warmly. James Christie took us through the center of Edinburgh on an inspiring walk. It involved of course photography, but just as much history and fascinating stories, in a city with very ancient history. James simply must be experienced, with his knowledge, love for photography and life as such. This is a... More

Was actually in Edinburgh to see the Military Tattoo but had an extra morning so 4 of us decided to take James' class before the show. 2 point and shoots, 1 DSLR and dh with Iphone. We wanted to learn how to take photos in manual mode and we did. Lucky for us it was overcast in the morning and... More

What you will get out of this tour: beautiful photos, know-how on taking pictures to use every day after, and a wonderfully entertaining, guided tour of Edinburgh showcasing much of the rich history it has to offer. My only regret? That I do not live closer to take more of James' photography lessons. This tour not only gets you professional-quality... More

We booked James' tour during a prolonged weekend-trip to Edinburgh, and it turned out to be the highlight of the trip. Excellent way to visit the city while learning the basics of photography. Thanks a lot, James, we'll be back soon. Andrea and Michel from Cologne, Germany

This tour was such a joy to attend. James demystifies the DSLR camera allowing you to take photos of a quality you wouldn't have thought possible. Whether you're a complete novice or have experience of a DSLR camera, James will assess your setup individually and help you with any adjustments you need. The tour itself is a great way to... More

I was referred to James's tour by a new acquaintance who had taken this tour a few years ago. She raved about how wonderful it was so I went online and booked right away. I, too, highly recommend this tour to any amature photographer who wants to take great pictures while touring Edinburgh and learn how to take their photography... More

James Christie met with us when and where he said he would. Right from the outset you became aware that James was a master of his craft as well as a font of historic information. He shared his knowledge freely throughout the very interesting tour of Edinburgh. He was at all times helpful and considerate . We had a fantastic... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
