Whisky Experience
Apr 2017 • Friends
You walk in and pay. Get on a ride that takes you through the making of whiskey. That was interesting. Then you go to a movie to go through the different regions of Whiskey making. Then you go into a room to taste ONE WHISKEY. Yes, that is correct , a little taste of whiskey. little. And only one tasting of one whiskey from one region of your choice. Then you go into a whiskey gallery and see the worlds largest whiskey collection and learn how to smell, swirl , and taste whiskey.

It was interesting. But for the price I say give more than one taste.
I went into whiskey shops that offer many whiskey tastes and answered all my whiskey tastes.

If you are really wanting to learn about whiskey, go or read it in a book and visit a few shops.

Highland Whisky experience
Feb 2016 • Couples
I thought the tour was good and informative. It was cool that they were making whisky at the time of the tour. It would have been nice to be able to take photos during the tour but I understand the safety concerns. I would recommend this tour to all who are interested in seeing how Whiskey is made.

Excellent tour, good guide and is something different. A bit pricey but you do get to keep the souvenir glass. Be wary of buying a bottle of whiskey as we did and later found it to be £12 cheaper in the supermarket.

Better tour than the whisky
Let's face it, The Famous Grouse is at best pretty mediocre supermarket whisky. So you might think the tour would be mediocre, but it's actually really good. I've done zillions of brewery/winery/distillery tours all over the world, and this tour gets high marks for being informative and for taking whisky tasting seriously. Our guide, Lucy, was quite knowledgeable and friendly. The distillery makes a single-malt component that goes into Famous Grouse, and it's not bad at all.

I highly recommend the add-on tasting ("famous" for £10 or "fine" for £20), which gets you generous pours of much higher-end whisky. The company also owns Macallan, and the fine tasting gets you some of it. The cafe on site is good for sandwiches and other light fare.

All in all a very pleasant day trip from Edinburgh.

Good Overview of Scotch but Disappointing End
Apr 2013
Okay, so we signed up for the higher priced platinum tour which included a guide who answered any questions we might have about different Scotch whiskys from various regions. As a wine drinker, I knew very little about how to enjoy Scotch before this tour and discovered Speysides are my cup of tea. The disappointment comes in because we had paid for the platinum tour and there were many dedicated Scotch drinkers in the group who wanted to stop in the lounge after and try some of what we were just shown. Alas the staff closed the lounge just as we emerged and said they were done for the day. A captive crowd willing to pay extra for their tour and no opportunity to buy a single dram beforesending us through their store. We were told we could come back another day but we were leaving. How many others were in the same situation? Staff here might coconsider scheduling the premium tour earlier in the day so they don't feel like they need to hustle their customers out the door.
