Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Pleasently suprised by this lovely little restaurant. Situated on the royal mile things were quiet due to current circumstances. The service was fast and friendly and the food excellent. Catered very well for gluten free best gf toastie my wife has ever had. Only complaint is they should shout louder about just how good they are for Colieacs. Would highly recommend.

I'm afraid I would not recommend, you visit. The service was very muddled the staff came to check our order 3 times before telling us we couldn't have something we had ordered. The food itself was very poor and overpriced. The children's pasta Bolognese was spicy which was not indicated on the menu. The adults pasta carbonara was the same size as the child's pasta portion. All of the ingredients are very cheap and taste that way. Which I actually wouldn't mind so much if the price reflected this. I do have to say the bagel my daughter ordered was good and very generous with the filling hence the 2 stars but the pasta dishes were pretty terrible. Perhaps reduce the menu and stick with bagels and sandwiches etc. Unless something changes I would say avoid this place.

All I could smell on arrival was a damp musty aroma, not food or coffee which was a little concerning. I ordered the menemen which was actually very nice and the coffee was nice too. My husband ordered the Scottish breakfast and tea, the sausage was something that resembled a frozen bulk buy, along with the bacon, a pre cooked in a round fried egg, doorstep wedges of bread, which was granary and he doesn’t like seeds or bits in his bread, bacon which looked like ham, the brown sauce was clogged up. Anyway he left hungry, the place wasn’t pleasant at all. Then had the cheek to put on a service charge and complained when I asked for it to be removed. If you are thinking of eating here think again, try Em’s Kitchen nearby and you’ll not be disappointed if you are lucky enough to get a table, which unfortunately today we didn’t

Tiny Traditional breakfast for £11.95. Two mushrooms, a smaller rasher of bacon and a very cheap tasting sausage. Mentioned it afterwards and the member of staff didnt respond. Not sure if she didnt hear me or didnt care to respond. Didnt want to make a fuss, but would not recommend.

Shocking went in to cafe bistro would not do just drinks.

Owner was aggressive.

Turned away party of 7 there were plenty of empty tables. (Not surprised given the attitude). Only place with empty tables on a rainy day

But would only serve food at 15:00 hours

Deserves his dire reviews.

A lovely little cafe with a great menu, and friendly atmosphere. We had the eggs Benedict which was delicious, and very reasonable. the staff were extremely friendly and happy. Very reasonable, we’d love to try again for lunch.

Conveniently located on the Royal Mile, reasonably priced and excellent quality. We had a lovely lunch and the warm welcome from the owner and his wife made the experience even better. Highly recommended.

Obviously geared towards tourists, rather than regular local customers. Over priced and very small portions. Do your research beforehand. Worst haggis burger ever, barely warm. Sent it back, only for it to come back microwaved (even the chips)

Lovely breakfast right in the heart of the old town. Nice friendly staff. Little touches like China mugs for a cosy tea. Thanks. Would visit again.

The Nether Bow Cafe Bistro, is conveniently located on the historic Royal Mile, just across the street from the Scottish Storytelling Center. It is therefore a convenient place to stop for a quick byte, to refresh from a hard day of visiting around. We were quite unsatisfied. The service was not rude, but neither was it friendly nor helpful (the place was almost empty, so there was no excuse for this). On a cold, rainy winter day, a soup (5 GBP) sounded good: we got a small portion of tasteless, barely warm, runny (very liquidy) vegetable soup. We then tried a sandwich, which was OK, not tasty but not a disaster like the soup. I would not recommend -- it seems the kind of place catering to tourists that does not count on repeat business.
