Contemporary art inside EdinburghbUniversity
Jul 2021 • Friends
A specialist gallery for contemporary art which gives privileged access - free - to the inside of Edinburgh University. Includes a beautiful old space which i'm pretty sure is the Dissecting Room where first the bodies provided by the notorious Burke and Hare, then Burke himself, were dissected as medical training in the 18th century. Not for everyone, but if you're into contemporary art, a must-see.

Unique experience with this exhibition

Went in without knowing what to expect, and this was very intresting experience, and great idea by the artist. I had a video, but can't list it.

Changing exhibitions of contemporary art
Oct 2018 • Couples
Part of the University of Edinburgh, we entered having come down from George Square and left through the quadrangle of the Old College.

The gallery holds an excellent programme of contemporary art exhibitions, which can be challenging, and are always interesting to visit.

In the current exhibition, Lucy Skaer explores the irrationality and serendipity of collections which draws on the collections of the University itself and work of other artists in addition to her own.

For me, one of the best things was seeing how she has used the Georgian Gallery, with an original drawing by the architect Henry William Playfair from 1817 included in her exhibition.

Doors Open Day
Sep 2018 • Friends
Visited as part of Edinburgh Doors Open Day with a group of friends. Small compact gallery. I was more interested in the actual architecture of the building than the art work I'm afraid. It wasn't my taste but quite a few of the group enjoyed it. One of the staff members gave a talk on the main installation piece of art which was very interesting. The installations change on a regular basis so I would probably visit again.

Small but Interesting Gallery
Aug 2018 • Couples
The Talbot Rice Gallery is part of the University of Edinburgh. It is situated within the far corner of the Quad of the University main building off South Bridge.
It usually has an interesting exhibition with a focus on contemporary art. Entry is free and always worth a stop for 30/40 minutes.

Thought provoking and beautifully constructed film
Oct 2017 • Family
I took my 11yr old granddaughter to see what we thought was going to be a film about nature (shots from Blue Planet are in it). We arrived right at the beginning of the film and were rather hurried in so I didn't get the chance to see any warnings about content. It took a while to realise it was quite violent and I very soon took her out. We didn't go to the Grave of Tarkovsky. I did glimpse some warning of the nature of the work as we came in, but didn't get the chance to read it properly. Some more obvious indication of the possible impact on sensitive children would have been helpful. Hence the lower star rating

Unusual AV art in a great exhibition space
Aug 2017 • Solo
This is an art gallery in a corner of the beautiful Old College building. The space is great for small exhibitions.
Just now it is holding a Stephen Sutcliffe audiovisual exhibition as part of the Edinburgh Festival activities. It will not be to everybody's taste but if you are interested in modern art and have an open mind it will be worth visiting.

Lovely and arty!

Loved this gallery! Visited for the exhibition a friend had posted about. Fresh and edgy in the art scene. I especially enjoyed the video art "The Common Sense"

Great spaces
Sep 2014 • Friends
A lovely canvas for any exhibition. I went to Counterplace which was interesting and varied. Not a massive set of spaces so even if you're not a major art fan - this can be a nice quick visit.
