Neighborhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

This spacious, stylish gallery was a joy to visit. Currently it displays a wide selection of Barbara Rae's explosive Lammermuir Landscapes . If you don't have the wall space or the funds, you can still browse at leisure . I did, for nearly an hour.
Staff here were truly welcoming.
The exhibition runs until 27th August and is also available online.

visited this gallery twice & refused entry twice due to rehanging pictures. Surely they can do this outwith opening hours. I won't be back a third time, I will buy my art elsewhere.

It's as much an invitation to open one's mind as well as eye to this gallery's superb collection of contemporary Scottish art. Its catalogue is literally an A to Z of such art from Bellany and Byrne through MacQueen MacRae (Fiona) to Wilson (both Helen and Thomas) to Wiszniewski. Its light and airy spaces are currently home to no fewer than five exhibitions: ceramics and bronzes by Anthony Theakston, brightly coloured still life painting by James Fairgreave, rather wispish portraits of things collected by Diana Hope, jewellery by Nicola Rawlings. Perhaps best of all was the exhibition of paintings and prints by Willie Rodger, the latter sublime comic facial studies such as Toothpick and Lipstick. There is also a browser of miniatures all named with the suffix 'wee'; also some larger paintings of outdoor activities such as kite flying and beach bathing.

.. always worth a visit for it's interesting Scottish and British art works.. doesn't do much 'contemporary' art.. but then where would you put it?
And only bankers and advertising executives can afford that, just as in Renaissance Italy and Flanders.

If you're seeking art works for 'bourgeois' rooms, go here!

The Open Eye is cool, elegant yet welcoming and warm. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The exhibitions are almost always fascinating and carefull curated, with a good range of predominantly Scottish Artists. If you are wandering off the beaten track in the New Town it is well worth a visit.

Me and my mates visited here in the summer on a day trip to Edinburgh.
We often go to galleries as its a bit of a hobby for us, so when I saw an artist on Facebook that I loved, and realised he exhibited here, I suggested we visit.
It wasn't a disappointment - the artwork here is really cool, without being pompous or stuffy...its like cool art for younger people.
The staff were friendly and relaxed and happy for us to browse. They even recommended somewhere nice to eat. Worth a visit whether you were buying or not.
