Lovely Building
Jul 2020
Unfortunately closed! Come on RBGE!! Let's get the UK back up and open for business post-Coronavirus!

Now that masks are mandatory, as per government advice things should be opening back up. A little dissappointed with this, but I still give it 5 stars as the building is very impressive.

350 year old house and gallery space, free entry and nice informative staff.
The house is very near to the John Hope Gateway entrance with a cute cafe next door.

Mar 2017 • Friends
Grand old house in the centre of the Royal Botanic Gardens with fountain at front.
Always visit house and grounds on my trips to Edinburgh while visiting family how live close by.
If in house seeing art exhibition you can get a lovely view over Edinburgh from the south facing windows.

An interesting small exhibition space
Aug 2017 • Couples
In the centre of the Botanic Gardens is Inverleith House. It is an interesting exhibiton space. When we visited, there was an interesting special exhibition about the development of the glass houses as well as an exhibition of works of art.

A trip to the House can easily be combined with a visit to the gardens.

The bus service is pretty good, but we decided to get there by walking the two miles from Edinburgh along the Waters of Leith, a delightful walk

The art on display was really interesting as were the plans for the glass houses.

The house is quite small so the visit will take under an hour. There is no charge.

Highly amusing modern art exhibition at Inverleith House
Oct 2015 • Friends
I visited here with a friend a few days ago, after meeting up to enjoy the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh.

Both the Botanical Gardens (excl. the greenhouses) and Inverleith House are free for the public to enjoy during the daytime, with Inverleith House being contained within the gardens and situated near the entrance.

I had no idea the gardens host modern art exhibitions, so this was an unexpected treat. I was able to enjoy the highly amusing John Chamberlain exhibition, which I gather is the first time these artworks have been exhibited in the UK.

The art was ... some would say it was challenging, some would say it was complete tat... but it is undeniable that it was an interesting experience to see his artworks - both very large and rather small - in this lovely building.

Inverleith house itself contains three floors - two moderately sized floors with a smaller floor underground. This contained a video projection room as well as some very reasonable toilets which people can use without a charge.
The video for this exhibition lasted for about an hour and could be seen for free, however I only saw a brief part of it as really the weather was much too nice to be watching the whole thing. So, I went outside and had a snooze in the gardens instead.

When I entered Inverleith House the staff greeted me, and I was given a nice map with the outdoor parts of the John Chamberlain exhibition clearly marked, as well as being given a leaflet with some information about the exhibition and a helpful floor plan with each exhibit marked clearly.

While the artwork is not to my tastes, I did find it hilarious.
The Inverleith House itself is in good condition, nice and clean, with pleasant staff.
The room for exhibits is good, with nothing feeling cramped.
They also had no problem with people taking photos.
It's in a good location, being both within the Botanical Gardens and very close to the lovely Inverleith Park.
The additional information handed out enhanced the experience, and with all of this even provided without an entry fee I think Inverleith House deserves a great review.

5 stars out of 5... I would gladly go back to chuckle at more modern art in the future!
:-)

Gallery in Beautiful Gardens
Feb 2014 • Friends
Inverleith Gallery is within the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. It's a house set in beautiful surroundings with large windows which provide lots of natural light. The exhibitions change regularly and are very good. The gardens and hot houses are also worth a visit. During summer events and barbecues are arranged but It's the perfect day out no matter what time of year you visit.
