Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Inspiring art and good food!

The newly reopened Fruitmarket Gallery cafe is excellent. Spacious, comfortable, big windows for people watching, friendly staff and delicious and reasonably priced food- we had baked eggs and smoked salmon and broad bean salad. And interesting art too!

Fruitmarket Gallery Cafe
Feb 2019
Cafe offered stunningly poor service. Our order was ‘forgotten about’ then we were told it would be 10 minutes- afraid not. 45 minutes after arriving and ordering I had to leave hungry, so can’t comment on quality of food! In mitigation I suppose it was busy, but not THAT busy. Chalk this one down to experience.

Tacita Dean de café

Interesting exhibition. I particularly enjoyed the interactive part of it. It worth a visit and it is totally free, although a contribution is suggested. The café is very nice with the best coffee I ever had in Scotland (honestly) and a beautiful piece of lemon 🍰.

Tacita Dean
Aug 2018 • Couples
We have visited this Gallery before and were especially keen to visit this year, having recently seen the BBC “Imagine” documentary. Whilst the galleries are not grand and the displays not on the scale of the London Tacita Dean presentations, there is much to see and enjoy highlighting her unique skills. To get the most out of your visit try to see the 50 minute presentation as a starting point, including her explanation of the exhibits you will see. Entry to the gallery is free, but a £5 donation is suggested and is justified.

Great vibrant gallery space

We really enjoyed visiting here. We went when a book fair was on that a colleague was taking part in. Really glad we got to go and check out this place. I often prefer the smaller galleries when you don't want to be bombarded with many things!

Went there for art .......there is none.......but at least it's free to look

'Emperor's New Clothes' mmmmm art ......no. Lovely introduction on TV upstairs by artist to explain so called art work on display. Seriously though the ' art' was absolute twaddle. At least the venue is free and you can walk away without feeling robbed. Artist great at talking and very interesting family background but the things on display were not art.

We popped in here for a look round. The current show is enjoyable - especially the Advice Bar. Conceptual Art can be dry and heavy, but the enthusiastic staff made up for any of that. The complete opposite to the atmosphere in CAC, across the road.

No one can do everything right....

Brilliant and definitely worth a visit. It's proximity to Waverley and city centre means there's no excuse! However if you are #Coeliac rethink eating at the cafe. Although gluten free cakes are available the server looked bemused and rolled her eyes when asked if separate tongs were used (not cool guys). A colleague came to the rescue... only to suggest he could brush off the crumbs from the adjacent cakes... emm ... no thanks. Therefore a point deducted. View the art and then make your way up to the Royal Mile where gluten free goodies are available without cross contimination, or staff.

Worth dropping in for a quick look round and there is a nice coffee shop. Nice post cards plus stamps for that card to your mum.
