The area

Address
Neighborhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighborhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Dean Village is a charming historic village in Edinburgh, Scotland, not far west of the city centre. Address: Dean Path, Edinburgh EH4 3AY, Scotland Mode of transportation: 1. Public transport: Bus: Take buses 19, 36 and 41 from Edinburgh city centre and get off at Dean Bridge station on Queensferry Road, about a five-minute walk away. Trains: If you need to travel by train, it is recommended to buy a railcard on trainpal and enter the RC777E at a 20% discount. There are a lot of locals in the UK who don't know about this discount and I super recommend it. If you can't use it, you can privately message or comment on me and share it! Highlights of the tour 1. Water of Leith riverside trail: Walk along the Water of Leith riverside trail for tranquil nature and riverside historic buildings. 2. Dean Bridge: This viaduct is one of the landmarks of the village of Dean and stands on it overlooking the entire village and the River Water Leith. 3. Wellcome: This is a historic residential complex with a very distinctive red brick structure and tower that is one of the classic sights of Dean Village. St Bernard's Well: This is a neoclassical mineral well, built in the 18th century, whose springs are said to have therapeutic effects.

5/5 Stars! Hidden Gem in the Heart of Edinburgh! I stumbled upon Dean's Village while exploring Edinburgh, and it's a treasure I'll never forget! This charming village is nestled in a tranquil valley, just a stone's throw from the city center. The village's cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and picturesque cottages transported me to a bygone era. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, making it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Be sure to visit the stunning Dean Village Bridge, which offers breathtaking views of the Water of Leith. Take a leisurely walk along the river, explore the village's nooks and crannies, and discover its rich history. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a unique experience, Dean's Village is a must-visit destination in Edinburgh. Tips: - Take your time exploring the village's narrow streets and alleys. - Visit the Dean Village Bridge for spectacular views. - Look out for the village's charming shops, cafes, and restaurants. - Take a stroll along the Water of Leith for a peaceful retreat.

Terrific spot of history off the beaten track, You can get here either walking from the city centre which is around 40 minutes but better still visit as part of the Leith Water Walkway which is a 12+ riverside walk from Leith to Balerno. The village is essentially an old milling area with beautiful buildings situated along the riverside. We were here in January which was quite bleak and dull but I'd imagine a Spring or Summer visit would be even better. Largely accessible for all although some paths are a little steep in places.

What a lovely location! really very suggestive view in this point of the river. we also turned the other streets, but we did not see anything that struck us. this point of the river instead, is very beautiful and particular. We had a few hours to see the city, but we really didn't want to miss this spot; I confirm that it was worth running all the way here to admire such an unusual and quiet place. definitely is a known place and therefore there are different people who admire it (I recommend a visit early in the morning)

Wonderful. Family trip with children July 2024. Highly Recommendation for those going to Edinburgh not to miss this glimpse of the city leaves you spellbound. Small walk of about 20 minutes to see an unknown but beautiful part of the city. Recommendation not to miss this excursion.

Firstly, be aware these are people's homes and so treat the area with respect, it does have some history but most people simply appear to take pictures and go into places they shouldn't. It did tick a box off my list of places to visit but once you have your pictures take a stroll following the river down to Stockbridge, its a lovely walk, and on a hot day offers plenty of shelter. In all a lovely location and remember it won't have your traditional tourist facilities , it's a pretty residential location, imagine if it was your home what would your expectations be from the visitors.

Dean Village is one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems—an enchanting, peaceful oasis tucked away just a short stroll from the bustling city center. As soon as you step into this picturesque neighborhood, you’re transported to a world of quiet charm and timeless beauty. It feels almost like stepping into a storybook, with its cobbled streets, historic buildings, and serene riverside setting.

Visiting Dean Village was a highlight of my visit to Scotland. Dean Village is a historic Edinburgh neighborhood on the Water of Leith that once served as working mills. The area is gorgeous and picturesque. The stone buildings are stately and beautifully maintained. Be prepared to take dozens of photographs. Before you head downstream towards Stockbridge and onto Leith, you pass by the Gate House (which is another impressive building). If I would recommend one area to visit on your visit to Edinburgh, Dean Village is my choice. The area is beautiful.

A walk of around 20 mins from Waverley, takes you to Dean Village ... a beautiful peaceful oasis within the hustle and bustle of the city. This is a residential area, that happens to be very picturesque, so disappointed by the previous reviews unhappy with the lack of amenities (especially as everything you need is only a five minute walk away). Rather than a tourist trap, this is simply a lovely walk with lovely scenery 🙂

Visiting Dean Village was a charming experience. We opted for a self-guided tour, using our own map, which made exploring this picturesque area both easy and enjoyable. The walk through Dean Village is simply beautiful, with its quaint streets, stunning architecture, and lush greenery. Each turn reveals delightful views that feel straight out of a storybook. We also made a stop at the coffee cart, which added a lovely touch to our visit. Enjoying a warm drink while soaking in the serene surroundings was the perfect way to take a break. Overall, Dean Village is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience a bit of tranquility and beauty in Edinburgh. It’s an easily manageable excursion that left us with wonderful memories!

Not worth the bother. (it’s a residential area with nothing there , no shops toilets bars , cafes , nothing ) the locals just seem very annoyed with tourists and rightly so as they are crammed over the roads and generally in the way whilst taking selfies . One nice view that’s about it - go to
Stockbridge instead

Don’t let the photos fool you, this is essentially one bridge you can walk on to get the typical photo that is plastered on every review and the internet. The area is mobbed by international tourists who take away the peaceful and quaint nature of the area.

Despite this, the view and village itself is beautiful and has a lovely riverside footpath adjacent to it that leads further across the city.

Worth doing if you need a small amount of time to burn during your visit.

Well, it is a picturesque place, but it is still a residential neighborhood whose attraction is that it crosses a pretty dirty river, by the way. Giving you a walk to it to build a bridge is not a "compelling necessity" either. True, it has a certain charm, but there are many things to do in Edinburgh. It's another thing if you've had enough time, then I'd understand the visit.

Dean Village is a little oasis of quiet and peace in the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh, especially during the Arts and Book Festivals in August.

A short walk from the center of town, its windy cobbled streets and older buildings have a quiet river running through the center of things, with delightful cool green pathways and all kinds of trees and flowers everywhere. There is some very old and very quirky architecture, along with lots of colorful buildings, hanging flower baskets and gardens to add splashes of color.

It's a pleasant way to spend a few hours, and the Museums of Modern Art are just a short walk down the river path. Just be aware that cafes, and restrooms, are scarce, especially on the weekends.

Dean Village is a pleasant village situated on the banks of the River Leith about 15 minutes walk from Princes Street. Dean Village ("dene" in Scots means "deep valley") was founded in the 12th century by the friars of Holyrood Abbey. For 800 years it was a prosperous town dedicated to grinding cereal, and there were up to eleven water mills. However, with the creation of more modern mills in Leith, trade in Dean Village began to decline, reaching its worst point in 1960, when it became a poor and decaying place. However, in the 70s, the potential of this place was seen because it was very pleasant and close to the center, and it was rehabilitated to become a residential area.
It is becoming more and more popular and it is well worth it since it is a very beautiful place. We went on an early Sunday in January and there were quite a few people.
I would recommend making time in your visit to the city to take a trip to Dean Village, you won't regret it.

Simple wandering time is all that's required to enjoy for this scenic and relaxing landscape along the Water of Leith. We enjoyed a blue sky and gentle river, walking along the river from Dean Bridge in July. It is a very old but well maintained part of Edinburgh, just need to stay considerate of the residents living in the area. Make sure you have some reasonable walking shoes just because areas of the path along the river are not sealed. There are lots of interesting landmarks along the way, such as the Rhema Scotland church that is being converted into a function centre as well. On the corner of Queensferry Rd and Bells Brae there is a beautiful old stone house. And the lush green foliage along the banks of the Leith river are full of vocal birds. Not much in the way of cafes so take a bottle of water. This doesn't need a tour guide to enjoy!

The sunny morning encouraged us to take the short walk off the major road to the village. There is a steep road down with a handrail to support those who may not be the fittest. An attractive residential development is set back on the right going down and challenges the reality of being in the city.
The buildings take you back to a distant past and your breath is taken away by the quaintness and as you walk down, the banks of the river are to the right with the occupied buildings looking down towards the river. A couple of the residents commented about the beauty of the location, and it was obvious from the flowers displayed that care and attention is paid to maintain this as a tourist "trap".
Although we did not follow the path into Stockbridge, it was well maintained and would be a natural extension to a walking adventure.

Deen Village was certainly a few mile walk up from Old Town in Edinburgh and the noise and confusion of tourists. What a haven; tree lined streets, beautiful old buildings with flower potted windowsills and a peaceful river running through. We finally heard the birds singing and saw some nature!
The old cemetery was worth a walk through but don’t step onto the grass because someone will be there to remind you of the rules.
No shops so no souvenirs!

Walkable from Prince St Gardens, I spent about an hour walking around the river, there are a few highlights to see! Great place to take photos, grab a coffee or snack before you head over. There are no shops except for a coffee bike. It’s all residential and very quiet, make sure to keep your voice down to respect the residents!!! Enjoy the peaceful zen away from the city rush.

Wonderful place to visit. A small village of mills and bakers now transformed into the home of art museums. The village is on the river Leigh and has very picturesque views of restored rows of houses, beautiful historic cemetery and some Harry Potter connected sites.
Modern art gallery is lovely too and has very interesting cafe with vegetarian food, not too common for the area.
Can spend an hour or few hours walking around and taking in the sights.
